I did not play on PC. Console is my first experience with ESO. From what I understand, PC would not have experienced this issue.
The naming convention needs revisiting. Use of the PSN /Gamertag names in game is not only confusing, it probably also opens players up to ESO terms of service violations that are difficult to resolve. Potentially offensive names cannot be easily changed.
There is also inconsistency in game. You will grow accustomed to everyone in your group or guild's PSN / Gamertag name but crafted items traded will show the item was created by the character name.
I'm sure this has to do with the chat system and I'm not offering an opinion on that system. It's just extremely odd that we create characters, with names, and those names are not used to identify those characters.

No surprise
Except the other recent RPG/MMO on console does not handle character names this way. So yes, surprise.
However, it will not solve the immersion breaking claims. Just go log into Neverwinter and look at all the Halfling Healers named Drtouchyfeelymcproctologyst or horsedeeekdotmpeg.
So as much as I would expect/like it to show character names, I do not think it is worth it for them to spend dev time on it instead of other items. No ROI IMO.
There is one example done differently (games)
It helps if you move away from MMO games are suppose to do XYZ
Smurf you might know, what games on Xbox don't show your gamertag? Sounds like Neverwinter?
Your gamertag is your identity on the console and is what is used for all tracking and even reporting of foolish of opposing players. I understand the want of some to only show the in-game name but at this point if they add the feature I hope its optional/toggle.
Let's be specific.
Is this about a name showing on someone's head OR a point of reference?
Technically no one has a name showing above their head but the point of reference is the gamertag which is consistent with any and all games.
Neverwinter does show character names on a players head but interactions are with the gamertag.
I continue to see a lot of MMO's should XYZ and most aren't looking at how this game intends to differ and what it is by design. Also, in all ways except for a very few this game looks just like Skyrim or Oblivion (with other players walking around)
Not sure why ppl are trying to attach a PC label on a console game that intends not to look or play like a MMO.
The PC crowd has spent so much time and effort redesigning their UI's with add-ons that seems to cause confusion now with the console release.
It's functional, it's consistent and normal.
