an external app/channel for guild management might even be over-stepping the boundaries of this philosophy which is why i was asking if there were any better alternatives to keep everything in one place.

I'm going to say this first: I completely agree with you. They made a bad choice in implementing a chat system that relies solely on everyone having a mic to communicate freely. But they made a choice based on a lot of factors and a huge one was the fact that all new consoles (PS4 & XBONE) come with a basic headset. I'm sure they didn't make the choice lightly, but that's a huge piece of information to just leave out when thinking about why they did it.
But once again... I agree that they made the wrong choice, but MOST (i.e. new console NOT pre-owned console buyers) do have a headset to use, albeit a basic one. So unless they do make a change to the chat system, it's a situation we have to make the best of.
