This bug can appear with this huge shield, or with a small shield. One thing always is the same: You cannot trust your shield bar and this means the death (what it means in the video, too).P.S.: It seems that this bug appears in combination with some skills (I only had it in pvp). For example biting jabs (templar clss skill) often makes my shield bar not working. But I don't know exactly what causes the bug.

A "critical" hit originates from the good old D&D days I think and it stems from an especially effective or brutal attack . It is kind of hard to land such an attack when your opponent is surrounded by a damage absorbing shield the rebuffs all attacks made against it.
Kind of makes sense.

From the perspective of balance Im not sure I agree, but I like this response.

The issue is a bug in the API with the RegisterForEvent(EVENT_UNIT_ATTRIBUTE_VISUAL_UPDATED, UnitAttributeVisual) Event. It just starts returning junk data at some point.
I'm developing a Shield addon for myself to give a little better visibility and clarity into how much shield is remaining, and to give a better visualization of it.
Another big issue with being stuck using that event displaying your shield value is it lumps Harness Magicka and Hardened ward into the same pool so you could be showing you have 15K shields remaining and then you get 1-shot by a snipe because the 15K remaining was actually your Harness Magicka.
I mention the issues with the API to Eric Wrobel and he started talking about making it so that shields could be crit and such so I just dropped the issue haha.

You may be taking the definition of need too strongly in this case. In chaotic group fights, or after a few hard hits, you have to check such things. And in PvP you don't have a standard rotation in a robotic sense. Therefore, you cannot just re-spam a shield to make sure it's active without potentially creating another issue by over-consuming a resource. Something as simple as a visual as to the state and strength of it helps manage that. Otherwise, you have to ensure you can spam the shield and that changes your build. It's been around a long, long time now and been /bugged many, many of these times. This thread have already done half the dev work for the devs, can you ask them to do the rest?

Do you know if there is a way to reset the API for displaying shields? It sure would be a lot quicker to type in a command instead of relogging all the time.
