large group play, how would folks feel about major zone boss challenges?

Playing games like Guild Wars 2, Rift, Warhammer online, and other MMOS, a lot had major group boss events opened to the world that any number of folks could participate in. These lead to their own unique challenges but also led to a lot of farming and grinding for some rare drops. ESO doesn’t really have that right now, the closest thing is dark anchors, which scale up with the challenge but doesn't necessarily offer more reward or challenge. So, what would folks want to see?
Bosses or events that take a larger party?
Events that offer better EXP and can appeal to grinders?
nothing at all because all of that should be instanced?

But not a "party" necessarily, if out in the world as a random event, then allow anyone grouped or not to take part. Other than, yeah a massive boss spawning like once or twice a day per map would be awesome.
If options weren't necessary, and everyone played the same way, no one would use addons. Fix the UI!

More single player content i only play with my brother and my mate most of the time so i dont mind content needing two people but thats it.

    This!

I've always thought this was something missing from ESO. Dont require us to group for it though, like the Bunni said! Would be amazing, can we has this ZOS, please?! Would really add some spice to the game.

Yea, something fun and engaging that I can't solo because it was in my way. I voted 4+, but 24 man would be my preference.

If only PvP was more stable. I would love to see events like this stir up things a bit. They are 'kinda' going that way with the siege from dolmens and the boost from delve bosses... But what if when a keep is damaged, a supply caravan launches from an allied keep. Capturing it would give some boost to capture, and defending it would boost defense (maybe even repair walls or something.) The caravan would have it's own defenses tuned so that you need 12 to capture it. Or maybe have a daedric titan fly into a siege... Or have some incentive to kill it out in the open map. Something to mix stuff up.

I would like to see more interesting overworld stuff in general.

Indeed. I played Rift from launch and the Zone invasions where the big bad boss thing took usually 1-2 raids of Players was a great mechanic. The only problem I would see with this in ESO is ZoS's absolutely terrible grouping design. Without Players actively asking to be brought into group there would be little chance that they would get the participation credit due to ZoS's other terrible combat mechanic for credit of kill. Also you would then have the issue of level gaps, where some Player who was at the fight the entire time and did a good amount of Healing for example would get no XP/loot because there was a full raid of VR14's, another one of ZoS's terrible designs.

That said I'm all for this kind of mechanic being added to ESO to enrich the game, especially if they could make it "dynamic" like Trion did with Rift (yes I know it's still scripted, but it at least seems dynamic).

I remember when I first started playing people would yell in zone when a dolmen was up.. to let people know who didn't have it AND because you could not easily solo it. It was awesome. You could meet new people, and it's a way to pull together strangers and work towards a common goal.

I would like something like world bosses/dolmens that take about 24 people to complete. I would like if this was an open world event, so really 20 people probably could do it, and 30 people could come and it would still be a wee bit of a challenge.

Although, as a person who began this game as a solo player, I understand that we wouldn't want a whole bunch of these. I figure 1 per zone would be nice. As well, don't allow them to scale depending on how many players are there - like dolmens (seem to) do.

I love questing and exploring alone still, as it allows me to get more immersed in the game.. BUT having some event where you need to gather with strangers is a nice way to introduce grouping as well would not break me from my enjoyment of questing alone at all. To me it actually helps it be more realistic, that there really are some things you can't do alone.

why they dont scale dolmens to the amount of players around is beyond me
its a challanging solo, its easy with 2-4 people, its sprint around trying to hit stuff with more than 4...

(also player scaling o the zone their in is needed for open world bosses and anchors and such, but well, fat chance, been saying this for a year now)

I decided to just choose more content but the sad thing is, we're not looking at anything new or cool for a while. Console is top priority right now and the game won't be changing in the least bit for a time due to its release I'm sure. :(

While I understand the want for solo content, I feel the amount of group content in public spaces is pretty lacking. Instanced is alright, but there should be good reason to get large groups together for some fun outside of a "grind" or pvp zerg rushes.

Oh, and keep in mind I mention bosses nut events could be classified in this as well. Public quests in warhammer online and guild wars 2 were something unique to my mmo experience with things like defending against waves of enemies to save a village or o tain a chance at a chest. Dolmens can offer a similar experience, but I would like to see some story come with it IMO.

I really could have voted for any of the first 3 options in the poll, but I went for the 24+ option because with the others there's always the chance that a really good player with a good build could solo them, and if we're going to have major zone challenges (which I think we should), I want them to be ones where you have to put out a call for help in /zone and hold off on going in until you've got a good number of people around to help out.

Kind of like dolmens at launch. Don't get me wrong, I'm OK with dolmens the way they are now (for the most part - it'd be nice if there was a bit more scaling to keep it from being a total faceroll when you've got a good number of people there), but at launch they provided the "oh crap, I need a lot of people to help with this" factor, and they don't really do that any more. At-level they are soloable with a good build, and with a moderately good build they can be taken on by 2 players.

So yeah, I want something that's a major challenge, requiring a whole bunch of players to take down. I would think not more than 1 of these per zone, and not something that is instanced by group (so that people don't have to group to do it - they can just show up when someone puts out a call in /zone).

Note: I'm coming at this from the point of view of a primarily solo player. I do the vast majority of my playing solo in ESO, but I still want there to be challenging content that requires multiple players to complete.

Tera had these things called Nexuses. Every day at a given time, in several locations, a portal would open and dozens of enemies would spring forth. There were hundreds of people and mobs fighting a couple of waves of mobs/bosses. No group required, except for the next stage (going in the Nexus and defeating other bosses.

This is what I expected Dark Anchors to be like in higher-level areas. Sadly, they can all be soloed, as can the "world bosses".

Let me go in the past MMO memories bag again and bring an example of how these once-per-day events can be bad. In Runes of Magic there was an Ant Queen boss you needed both for an achievement and for a quest. It spawned on a 24-hour timer from the last time it had been killed. People who encountered it never said a word except maybe to guildies or friends, so if you weren't lucky enough to chance upon it by accident, you wouldn't even know when to expect it.

In several months of playing the game, I never saw the Ant Queen.

As a soloer, I'm all in favour of more group content for those who want it, as long as there is additional solo content as well, and with the group content not being incorporated within any main story or other essential quest-lines so as to avoid having forced grouping. Ideally, all instanced content should in any event be scaled to the number of people participating from solo to full group.

I also remember the first dolmen that I encountered at about level 6 or 7 in Glenumbra (Daenia Dolmen)... I had been doing everything else by myself up to that point with no problems at all, and I didn't realize that this would be any different. I got my butt handed to me. Badly. It was only when I resurrected at a wayshrine and saw people posting in /zone that the dolmen was up that I realized that this was meant to be completed by a bunch of people.

Then dolmens started becoming fun for me (although I never went much out of my way to complete them).

Excellent way to put it. That's what I'd like to see too. Not so much an event that a guild gets together and plans to go and do (although if they want to get a group together and try to find one spawning, there's no problem with that either), but something that the community as a whole gets together to complete. Or, at least, the portion of the community that's online and in that zone at the time.

I could see this... but it sure would need something to prevent just continuous farming for great unique items that may drop...

Perhaps make it something like a pledge to get the reward. So you get a daily pledge, instead of just a mass of people waiting for it to respawn to be rewarded. The pledge would be region specific, and of course level specific.

On that topic, I would be fine if they didn't drop insanely large rewards. As well, make them only happen every 4 hours or something. Something to be talked about and waited on!

Would also be cool to see a few roaming in Cyrodiil.

I kinda like the pledge idea. A bit of a farm gate, and it's easier to delegate loot on larger fights...
This one has an eloquent and well thought out response to tha... Ooh sweetroll!

This game desperately needs a reason to group in PvE without forcing them to do it just for a grind.
One per faction or zone would be great.
Make it big enough that people find it challenging.
Make the fight epic enough to need a large group.
Make it fun so people want to do it in the first place.
Make it rewarding enough that people want to do it again.
And do not require grouping just to do it.
As many have already pointed out, old school dolmens are the way to go on this.

We should definitely discuss pros and cons to this.

Interesting thought for Cyrodiil, since it always comes up when scroll running to do a dolmen, might be to place a scroll at an ayleid ruin to spawn a major boss? I could see that being fun and a major fight spot as well. Imagine a world boss you need to fight with combinations of dps, tanks, healers, siege and against the 3 way fight of the other alliances =3

Of course. Sort of like a enraged timer from other games would be good. So once the fight begins, if it is not settled after a certain allotment of time, then the boss gets enraged, increasing power and defense. This makes it so it just doesn't become a long chore that can be done with enough healers.

That could work. The idea is to allow an on the spot Pug to complete it, but not easily.
Should the difficulty scale based on the average level of players involved? Perhaps to the average of the highest 50%? Or perhaps it should remain static like dolmens?

I like the idea of scrolls kicking this off.
After all these are powerful artefacts....surely parties other than the 3 factions would also be interested in gaining hold of these for their own nefarious purposes.
BUT....I dont think this is really that fair for the PVE community.
