What about disabled people who are mute or have speech impediment, my friend is one of them and we always communicate via chat to make it easy for him.
These people will be driven away cause of this dissension. I really hope they change there minds because it would be a shame.

People are jumping to conclusions without any details.
Don't assume no keyboard chat means not form of text to chat at all

Also deaf people who play voice chat games tend to figure things out just fine. If they decide to play and are deaf, they usually get around any issues

WHAT CHAT SYSTEMS ARE AVAILABLE TO PLAYERS ON CONSOLES?
    Updated 04/17/2015 06:37 PM Published 01/28/2015 11:24 AM
The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited will support voice chat.

Console versions of the game will also provide limited input by USB-connected keyboards for features not already supported by voice chat or controller input.

Not talking about keyboard support, how do u go from having no keyboard support to not having a zone chat channel?
They are planning on keyboard support btw read the update in the thread.
Topic is not regarding keyboard support.
Asking if zone chat exists on console or not .... Nothing about keyboards

If you don't have a keyboard support, then how do you want to communicate in a zone chat? By telepathy?

Pretty simple, use a control pad, type :lfg
    Vr14 dps lfg trials/pledges

When it takes 20mins to an hour to find a group in the first place typing with a controller is noo big deal

Welcome to eso and most mmos, pick up groups (aka pugs ) are often formed in zone chat or whatever the game might call it. If you ever played wow or any other mmo youd probably find familar. Hope ya enjoy eso

I think ppl are jumping to conclusions to some extent but a logical assumptions does suggest no zone chat in text format

My personal feeling is this: If it's a roleplayingngame using voice chat and emotes/other stuff then it's no different than talking to humans in real life. I know the younger generation cannot imagine living without a tablet, smartphone, or some texting but things work a lot better without all this clutter.

(Lots of edits to get the content in below...added the text afterwards)

    http://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/comment/1739329/#Comment_1739329

Actually, younger people are more likely to be fine without having text based chat channels or other more intricate/complex/deeper setups. Voice talking and rapidfire hopping in and out of brief talks are more natural to modern teens on sites like Facebook. People in their mid 20s or later like myself grew up without having always on internet and minicomputers called "smartphones" in our pockets and paperback sized lightweight full fledged windows 8.1 tablets, let alone wristwatches to keep us informed instantly of any new 160 character text coming our way or other topics we set it to. Black and white PDA's existed but were expensive and rare to see someone have outside of needing it for work. "Our push notifications" were called pagers, boxes the size of a very thick phone that could clip onto your belt and beep if someone wanted to catch you.
-First-Wave Closed Beta Tester of the Psijic Order, aka the 0.016 percent.
Exploits suck. Don't blame just the game, blame the players abusing them!

-Playing since July 2013, back when we had a killspam channel in Cyrodiil and the lands of Tamriel were roamed by dinosaurs.
    ________________
-In-game mains abound with "Nerf" in their name. As I am asked occasionally, I do not play on anything but the PC NA Megaserver at this time.

I remember when those came along. Prior to that our "push notifications" were people yelling at you.

So, what's the word on zone chat? Some people earlier today made it seem as if zone chat was all voice, which doesn't seem logical to me.

    Today's livestream answered the question.

NO TEXT CHAT. Keyboard is used for naming characters and guilds only.

On the livestream. Answered. Just like auction houses.

    NO.
I am not spending a single penny on the game until changes are made to the game that I want to see.
    1) Remove having to be in a guild to sell items to other players at a kiosk.
    2) Cosmetic modding for armor and clothing.
    3) Difficulty slider.
    4) Fully customizable player housing that isn't tied to anything in the game other than having the correct resources and enough gold to build. Don't tie it to PvP, guild membership, or anything at all. Oh, make it instanced so as not to take up world map space, too. Zeni screwed this one up already.
Any /one/ of these things implemented would get me spending again, maybe even subbing.

They really should implement some way to at least spam the most common chat needs: Tank_LFG (or Healer, DPS, etc.), Jeweler_LFW (or other crafter), Help me!, Need help? AFK or brb, etc. This is outrageous, made all the worse by the fact that they took peoples' money for weeks for the copies/transfers to console without mentioning this, even though they had to have known a long time ago that they weren't capable of implementing a chat window.

Final Fantasy can do it, even DCUO can do it and Lord knows Daybreak Games only has a handful of devs left working there....So why not Zenimax, who is rolling in it?

On boy, don't stir this pot again. We aren't getting text chat (I've got a 14 page thread arguing for needing it). Link

Instead we are getting Quick Chat radial dial like the Radial dial we have for potions today. We'll have one for emotes and one for common text phrases said based on researching through historical text logs on PCs.

ESO Live about 22 minutes in

Yes it sucks, but posting in an old thread about an issue that has already caused over a dozen locked threads due to extremely rampant disagreements between players does not help things. Just FYI though: They've confirmed some sort of a "radial chat menu" will be added with "common phrases", but nothing else so far.

It's no zone anything on console which is great. Ppl will play vs using text chat for trade, log, recruiting, guid, and whatever else that zone chat shouldn't be used for considering the other systems in place.
The game as we know so far on console will be no different than realistic interactions with other humans as no one can yell loud enough to be heard in an entire town.

See people...talk using proximity chat (20 yards) which can be toggled on or off
See people...don't talk and just play or party just like PC
See ppl, make friends or guilds.
Use the grouping tool which is good as there is no zone chat so people will be forced to use it and get results.

All in all...I think it will be great and a breath of fresh air for some but everything is inline with any other console multiplayer game so it should be awesome pending any bugs

Too bad it won't work anything like your predictions. And a month into console when you are proven wrong, and the reviews are slamming console release, I hope you come back here and admit your were dead wrong.

You've shared that you don't like ZOS' decisions

Why not choose not to play on console as these features don't align with the experiences your seeking

Some people bought the game collectors edition and all at launch, so we could play the game, while we wait for the console vversion Then 5~6 months before release, surprise core feature gutted, its ok tho cause zos knows best... Obviously thats why game has done soooo well.
    Anyone remember swtor after inital
deflation ? I do and what was said by bioware was hilarious ... "Its the fans fault, swtor failed "....lol sound familiar?
    Aka we know best!
Guess thats true aslong as making as much profit as possible is the only criteria for "knowing best "
And not everyone will go along with being forced to use a system.
Simply dont have too, noreal need to do any of that. We can do it all ourselves. ....same with raiding. People will simply use 3rd party apps and websites, already seen some popping up. Hi five zos :)

The game needs text chat. It's ridiculous to try and have an mmo without text chat. Organizing attacks in campaign is a pain without it. Trying to find a group for anything is a pain without it since most people on the console port don't use group finder. Trying to trade is a pain without it. It wouldn't be hard at all for them to add a text log into the bottom left corner of the screen that activated with the enter key and switched chat tabs with ctrl+1 - ctrl+0 (if you would actually use 10 chat logs). Add area, party, and guild text and things will be much better.
