Will zone chat still function in eso on ps4? As in can i type stuff into zone chat with my ps4 controller?
  • c.p.garrett1993_ESO
Well keyboard support has been confirmed as a no-go. Nothing has been stated on any other form of text chat, I hope they have something though. I can't imagine communication over voice only.

    Hey everyone,

We wanted to provide an update on keyboard support for the console version of ESOTU. Unfortunately, the message I posted in this thread yesterday was based on our development plans from earlier in the year, which included keyboard support for chat. However, keyboard support for chat is not something that will be available for the console version of the game. You will be able to use a keyboard for text entry in areas such as guild naming, etc., but not for chatting. Mouse support is not planned for the console version of ESOTU.

As things change in development, we definitely try our best to stay on top of those changes to keep you in the loop, but we know that misinformation can be frustrating. Again, we apologize for the confusion.

It's unknown, but unlikely to have any sort of text chat other than in-game mail. The chat text box will seemingly be removed entirely. If these are true and voice chat only is supported for grouping, I will not be able to group period due to my thick accent.

We'll only know more upon release of the console Beta, it seems, as ZoS is keeping quiet on this matter after it got out that there is no keyboard chatting on consoles.

Not talking about keyboard support, how do u go from having no keyboard support to not having a zone chat channel?
They are planning on keyboard support btw read the update in the thread.
Topic is not regarding keyboard support.
Asking if zone chat exists on console or not .... Nothing about keyboards

I think ppl are jumping to conclusions to some extent but a logical assumptions does suggest no zone chat in text format

My personal feeling is this: If it's a roleplayingngame using voice chat and emotes/other stuff then it's no different than talking to humans in real life. I know the younger generation cannot imagine living without a tablet, smartphone, or some texting but things work a lot better without all this clutter.

(Lots of edits to get the content in below...added the text afterwards)

You're wanting voice chat support zone chat? That would be insane to have 100+ people all talking on the same voice channel at the same time.

My point and reasoning for talking to keyboards: If there is no keyboard zone chat, there will be no zone chat period, no game maker would be crazy enough to think 100+ people all in a voice chat at the same time would be a good idea. The best/closest you can get with such with voice only is local proximity chat. However, that too is unknown a this time if it'll be included or not.

It's funny to me that zone chat is a concern as on PC it's just a bunch of chaos.
I sometimes give the example of walls of text. Or imagine going to the mall and there being a thousand people using bullhorns saying the same things over and over again every 2 minutes. And then ppl getting overshadowed so they too begin using bullhorns to grief the original bullhorn users.

If they confirm no text zone chat I will be SO HAPPY

Accessing the chat entry field in Neverwinter can be awkward and difficult as, without a mouse, it's not intuitive to open the text entry field and activate the on-screen keyboard.

I wonder if this may be behind them abandoning keyboard support? I know Skyrim didn't have a text field, and the UI seems pretty heavily modeled after that game. Maybe they felt that the awkward nature of a text entry field, as well as making it readable from across the room, were unnecessary hurdles or actually somehow hindering to gameplay.

    Who knows.
Ruze Aulus. Mayor of Dhalmora. Archer, hunter, assassin. Nightblade.
Gral. Mountain Terror. Barbarian, marauder, murderer. Nightblade.
Na'Djin. Knight-Blade. Knight, vanguard, defender. Nightblade.

    XBOX NA
Ruze is a veteran of the PC Beta, lived through the year one drought, survived the buy-to-play conversion, and has stepped foot in the hells known as Craglorn. He mained a nightlbade when nightblades weren't good, and has never worn a robe. He converted from PC during the console betas, and hasn't regretted it a moment since.

He'd rank ESO:TU (in it's current state) a 4.8 out of 5, loving the game almost entirely.

This is an multiplayer game. I should be able to log in, join a dungeon, join a battleground, queue for a dolmen or world boss or delve, teleport in, play for 20 minutes, and not worry about getting kicked, failing to join, having perfect voice coms, or being unable to complete content because someone's lagging behind. Group Finder and matchmaking is broken. Take a note from Destiny and build a system that allows from drop-in/drop-out functionality and quick play.

Bingo! We are on the same page

I Just tried to explain this in another related post to someone else.
Neverwinter only allows controller support BUT when the text field is activated, any usb keyboard can be used for letters n numbers. But the function keys aren't supported or ENTER

Until no "text chat" is confirmed then ppl are just over reacting.

Why so people cant run pug groups in cyrodil?
So people cant sell things in zone chat?
So people cant fill dungeon/trial groups when someone drops?
You cant get by with disableing the chat log?
Are these the reasons you want zone text chat removed?

Thank you for contacting The Elder Scrolls team with your query regarding using the function /zone on console.

As far as we know, this function should be available, though I guess it will take some time to type your message through the notepad. Did you know there will be some voice command as well?
There will be further announcement on the specificities and function available for console closer to launch. Please remember to check our site on regular basis:

Support gave me answer looks like zone chat is still in the game <3

And I'm also interested in voice commands, even if I don't use them much in other games.

Skyrim was a single player game, of course it didn't have a text field. It also didn't have player guilds and group chat, should we remove those too to make ESO more like Skyrim?

I don't care either way because I play on PC, but I seriously hope the LFG tool will work flawlessly when ESO hits consoles if they don't hav access to zone chat.

Enjoy it, ill be bypassing it with psn chat, since my guild will already be grouped, but we pick up pugs from zone chat to fill extra groups.
Good thing if zone chat gets too much for ya you can close the chat. Log, takrs like 2~5 seconds but totally managable even on a gamepad.
Wont be hearing proximity chat, unless i want to while sneaking around eaves dropping.
Cant wait to see some bandwidth from cyrodil go to voice comms ..... Im sure cyrodil doesnt need any extra help with latency lol

I really hope they change their mind and give us text chat. Im french canadian, my english isnt bad, i can communicate in english pretty well in a chat but i never speak english and i don't feel comfortable with it.I am pretty sure i ain't the only one in this situation, I have a feeling this will just split the community... They should just give us the opportunity to toggle in game chat. FFXIV:RR has in game chat on PS4, i use a keyboard for chatting, if i couldnt chat in game, the game wouldnt feel the same.

What's is a Megaserver if you can't communicate properly ? ZOS is taking really weird descision without explanation...
