While I prefer lore-friendly housing (if any), I cannot help but be awed by the implementation of player housing last I played RuneScape. RuneScape uses the alternate dimension method for player housing, and it allows players to build as small or large a complex as desired. Complex, because there were more than rooms available for construction: players could build dungeons, mazes, arenas and populate them with enemies, traps, and loot that regularly respawn. It makes my eye twinkle when I can design my own dungeon.

I would kill for something like that in ESO.

Communal living with my guildies . . . hey who drank all the Stros Rum?
Given the nature of my Guild it would be nice if we could take over a tower, or disused Mages Guild building.

Communal crafting worries me less than personal crafting (but still worries me a little) but I would like to be able to have my Guildies close by for RP and grouping purposes!

Following on from my earlier preference, something like this would be very cool:

Obviously replace the light that hasn't yet been invented in ESO with a lantern or a flaming torch!

Honestly, I would love it if we had options, and were not just pushed into one style of house (i.e., mansion or nothing).

In my perfect world, we should be able to buy houses that increase in price the bigger/fancier they are.

Tier 1 houses would be a small shack where we could store our stuff, have some decorations/trophy storage, and maybe one crafting station.

Tier 2 houses would be a slightly larger house, with more storage and trophy displays, two crafting stations, and your choice of a small provisioning or alchemy farm.

Tier 3 houses would be a large house, with more storage and decoration space again, three-four crafting stations, and small provisioning and alchemy farm.

Tier 4 houses would be a mansion/estate, with the largest storage/decoration space, option for all crafting stations, and a large provisioning and alchemy farm.

That way as you continued to play, you could upgrade your house and see some results if you wanted to, but could stop at any point if that it what you liked.

I might be alone in this, but I'm not really looking forward to player housing.

So many zones are ghost-towns, as it is... I worry that the lively feel of town centers will die off because everyone is inside "playing house".

Don't get me wrong, I liked having housing in the single-player games, and I've played in plenty of world-building sandboxes, but it's not something I miss in an MMO. Give me more bank space and I'm content to be a vagabond.

*note: this doesn't mean I don't think you should have housing if you want it. Just not something I'm excited to see.

I think I know what you mean. Towns can get pretty deserted if player housing is implemented in such a way that towns are rendered "obsolete" by the player base due to their practicality and personal customization.

However, so long as towns are still encouraged to be visited for certain functions (like crafting stations and banking), then town population should be minimally effected.

Moderate house with some nice furnishings, a few key crafting stations
A nice house in the woods/mountains next to a stream with a nice fishing hole. Needs a large library to keep all the lorebooks and other random books I "pick up" on my adventures. Plenty of storage and display racks and mannequins to show off my treasures.

I'm torn regarding the crafting stations, though. I like the idea of self-sufficiency, but I don't want to see the cities and towns become ghost towns. The only crafting station that needs to be in my house is a cooking fire in the kitchen (everybody needs to eat, right?). Should have a small garden to grow provisioning (and maybe alchemy) ingredients as well as some animals running around for the meats.

Just a small hut like the one you can buy in the Imperial City in Oblivion.
