My first ever purple motif, disappearing in front of my eyes

So I have a rather unfortunate experience to share. But also one that will hopefully prevent it from happening to any of you.

I was questing in Deshaan, and I had one of those quest NPC's following me. (Whooptie [snip] doo). I went into a house, and started to steal things despite this annoying NPC following me, and preventing me to go into hidden state. I move around to make her face away from me, while I steal things, to prevent getting a bounty.

I go into another house, I go upstairs and I see a Primal Motif in a nightstand. This is my first ever rare motif, so I was very excited and very happy. But I still had this god damn NPC up my rear, so I had to position myself properly to pick it up. Right as Im about to pick it up, the nightstand appears empty. NO ONE else is in the room. Basically, the motif just disappeares.

Safe to say I'm extremely unhappy right now. My first ever rare motif just disappearing in front of my eyes.

If you EVER find a rare motif, pick it up regardless of the sitaution (as long guards are not right around you), and just log out and wait for the bounty to go away.

You can still pick it up with guards. Just choose to run and hope for the best :) I've seen many a person running out of Shornhelm with the law chasing them :dizzy:

Sorry for your loss....but the good news is, for only a small amount of Crowns, you can get it back :)

I dont want the Primal for my collection, I wanted to sell it for the gold. 30k is a lot of money for me, especially since I donate a lot of money to others to make sure they can get their horses.

lol, and you were bothered about 40 gold or so bounty?

You could just take it and wait some 10 min for the bounty to disappear or log off for a while. :)

    This happens a LOT.

I am unsure if it is a feature, because often if I go into a nightstand and get seen by an NPC, the item disappears. You look, they see you, you don't steal the item to avoid a bounty and then when you try and steal it again the item is gone, like they removed it from the nightstand.

No idea if it is intended or whether the item just reloads or something, I had an epic motif become a green flavour item within seconds.

How is it my fault? The thing just disappeared? What kind of game mechanic is that? Also, some of us actually like to get into character and enjoy the games features, such as sneaking and stealing. Also, the quest NPC was all up my ass and prevented me from doing my own thing.

    This is not my fault

the NPC did not prevent you from taking the motif. It is your logic that prevented you from doing that. You could simply take it after you saw it first time and accept the small bounty as a result.

It should have still been in the nightstand, regardless of if you were stealthed or not. That sucks though, sorry to hear that. I'd be pissed.

It looks like some of the people here didn't understand what happened to you. You were not caught stealing, right? You looked what's in the container, closed it, and upon second checking it was empty?

If that's the case then I want to add that I've noticed the same thing. You open the container to see whats in it and if you close it without taking whatever is in, the container will empty on its own in ~2 seconds time frame.

I'm not sure if that is intended or a bug or invisible ninjas :p
All in all I've noticed this happening regularly so anyone can go and check it out; and please do tell if it is happening to you too. Might be a bug worth of devs attention.

Never happened to me, and often i open and close the container just to check quickly whats inside in crowded areas.

It couldn't be niinja'ed as containers content is different and independednt for each person.

That is not true. This has happened to me several times with white and green items. Basically, if you open a container and then walk away, it seems to become empty after a little while - can't say how much. I've dealt with this by keeping the container opened until I'm in the clear, then if necessary reposition myself and *quickly* reopen the container before it resets.

Yeah, I've seen this too. Not with purple motifs, but with a couple blue recipes. Once back before the justice system (my inventory was full so I went to flush it and when I came back the recipe was gone). And, with a blue fence item during the 1.6 beta. I had my hand in the drawer, backed out, waited for the guard to wander off, and once I was alone, I cracked open the desk again and... nothing was there.

To expand my previous statement; I actually tested it out.

It was in Rawl'kha inn, top floor, I was alone and opened a backpack, closed it and just watched it; It went to "empty state" in a few seconds, albeit it was few weeks ago so maybe it was patched. When did the rest of you encountered this? @demonaffinity @starkerealm @daemonios

@ZOS_GinaBruno could you pass this to appropriate people and check if it is intended or a bug? Pretty please! o:)

Containers reset every so often (maybe ten minutes or so). If you get really unlucky, this can lead to the situation described in the OP, where if you close the container, and they all reset around you, now the same container can show as empty. Horrible luck, but it can go the other way as well.

Almost the same thing happened to me, I was in a bank i think, found my first and still only Purple motif, got super excited, grabbed it and was quickly accosted by a nearby guard, no worries I thought I could just run for it.
It was then that I realized you cant open doors while guards are chasing you which left me with the only option to die and lose the motif.
Apparently guards in Tamriel has the ability to make their victims forget how to open doors.
    Talk about an emotional rollercoaster.

Yesterday I bought the motifs at the crown store...

The same thing has happened to me numerous times with white and green items. I submitted a bug report. It would be very nice to know if this is working as intended or is indeed a bug.

I assume this must be one of the new bugs that appeared after the last patch. I did not notice items that disappear after opening the same container again, but many containers that look like full but were empty and not lootable. Could be related, eventually..

Yes i have had this happen with many items, seems like if you open anything else, move to far, or take more than a few second whatever is there will disappear.

Then the system manipulated you into behaving exactly like they want. They annoyed you just enough to make you spend money to get past the annoyance, but not enough to make you lose interest in the game.

Have seen stuff vanish like that many times seen chest open by themselves and the content emptied seen it hundreds of times with resources vanishing as i run up to them with noone around I suspect someone operating some kind of remote harvester program on eso that hasn't been dealt with. either that or the things exist in all the phases and someone else harvested it just bad programming.

Hm, any chance it may be to do with how the megaserver works? As far as I can figure it layers mini servers over the top of each other. I used to get friends popping up in separate mini servers so I can see their indicator running around in front of me, but they're phased out. Its the same with multi-stage quests, which can cover entire towns... Perhaps rare items are shared across the phases, that'd certainly explain why they stay rare but theres plenty of greens...
