I get a warning when I sell a stolen purple item.

I just got my first purple stolen item and when I try to sell it to a fence, I get a warning that I can't buy it back. Is there another way to sell or use the purple item? Why am I getting this warning if I can only sell it to a fence?

No, go ahead and sell it. Easy 750 gold. Stolen items (excluding gear / motifs etc) are gold fodder, nothing more.

Yeah you want to sell those purple stolens! Ofc not the motifs and recipes but those other purples are purely for selling. It will always warn you that you cant buy them back, I think that is just so you pay attention to what you are trying to sell.

You have to be very careful with that, you cant buy back everything you sell to a normal vendor. I learned that the hard way lol!

Thanks for the info. So what I understand, you can only sell the stolen or laundered items. Other than that there is no other use for them - correct?

What is the point of laundering items if laundering them cost as much as selling them - with the exception of crafting items that you can use?

I understand the OP's confusion, The first time I had a stolen purple I got that warning and backed out to see if it was a collectible or something - it wasn't.

The warning is a bit misleading and does make you wonder if it's useful for something you're not aware of.

laundering is for motifs and the equipment clothes you can find, also laundering is another way to gain xp in the ledgerman skill tree.

Agreed. Whoever came up with the design should be shot in the foot and only admitted to hospital when he manages to find 3 other people willing to maim themselves the same way in order to accompany him.

Ultimately, any method of entering an enemy keep without breaking down the door is considered an exploit. Thanks for checking!

The game provides a warning for Blue and Purple stolen items simply because selling them to the fence results in being unable to ever get them back.

Personally keep my purples (as well as some blues and greens) just for the sake of personal trophies. Launder them and deal with the expenses so if a guard ever does catch me (lol yeah right) they will remain in my inventory.
For example, have kept a (green) Skooma Pipe and carry a Finely Crafted Violin just to add to character flavour.

If it is a motif, you can launder it.. it's like 39g to launder it... and then you are able to sell it in guild stores or via chat to another player.

But thanks for letting us know there are purple dropped items other than motifs and recipes to be found.

Also laundering comes in handy when you find a place to farm grand soul gems and what not... real handy...

It warns for blue, purple and yellow items.

the reason is: If you stole a purple motif or recipy and click like a maniac through sell through fence it's gone forever. You can't buy items back from fence. So a warning is in order for those items.

You can launder the items so they loose the "stolen" tag and, if caught, guards won't take it of you. If laundered you can sell it through normal channels or keep it.

Stolen items without use come also in different tiers. A purple items gets you more gold and xp for legerdemain. It has further no use in the game. But because it's purple, you still get the warning due to the above reasons.

The College of Illusion hides me and fuddles or pacifies my opponents. The College of Mysticism detects my object, reflects and dispels enemy spells, and makes good my escape. The key to a nightblade's success is avoidance, by spell or by stealth; with these skills, all things are possible."

Ha! I also kept the Skooma Pipe! *high five*!
I would love to keep more just as personal trophies, unfortunately I cant justify it with inventory space lol!

I think that warning is just a blanket warning on all items that are blue and above, because sometimes you can loot a stolen weapon or armor piece. Weapons and armor could be deconstructed or sold to other players for a bit more maybe?

You get this warning for all items blue and above that you have stolen.

Honestly it is utterly ridiculous, all it does is confuse people and cause them to worry about selling the item. I see this question asked in /zone several times a day and usually once or so a day in /guild because it doesn't give any clarification, it just says: "Are you suuuuure? This is EPIC, after all.".

ZOS need to just get rid of this prompt or make it so it only gives a prompt on this like motifs that are actually useful beyond the Justice System.
