Game companies wanted more than 100 people to play their game. Seriously you can't turn away casual players because they far outnumber the hardcore and bring in more money. There still needs to be hardcore content but permanent death and XP loss that affects the whole game is not the way to do it.

Well developers decided to instead place insane amounts of grinding instead of removing exp on deaths. Or they raise the max level AND lengthen the grinding to reach max level/endgame

Exp loss on death required more skill than insane grinding and once you got to cap you could feel much more proud....some people never made it!!!

Yea you can thank the instant gratification millennials for all those changes.

In today's mmos, you die and you use some kind of instant Rez on the spot ability. Dying had impact back in the days.

Mobs only chase you so far these days. Back in the day they chased you until you zoned or died and often ran faster than the standard speed of a player.

You have waypoints everywhere and super fast horses or flying mounts in today's MMOs. In the old MMOs you had a couple classes that could port or actually had to spend time to get somewhere.

In Everquest, you actually had to eat food to keep going and gear / money had weight. In todays MMOs, you have giant bags that are holes of holding.

I remember the epic trains back in Everquest. I seen many dungeon cleared out when someone goofed up.

Ever forget to hit enter to type and start out by striking the A key? Lol. I had many of harmless merchants give me the beat down.

I got to stop here. I could just go on and on. Basically the games of today are so damn dumbed down.

I also loved how the night would spawn some nasty mobs that would jump you in the night and were higher level than the surrounding mobs. Haha.

My character no longer loses exp on death, but my character still lags out and disconnects to death several times per day.

I got to stop here. I could just go on and on. Basically the games of today are so damn dumbed down.

I was born/entered gaming after this golden age, but I still long for it. My entry to difficulty in gaming is Etrian Odyssey III, which the humorous and accurate linked post states:
Etrian Odyssey III only has one difficulty, and that difficulty is ***.

My very first battle is the subject of my college admissions paper, of which I must note out of five (5) party members, we limped back to town with two (2) mortally wounded and three (3) dead. We battled two (2) fish.
It took 2 weeks and 11 Game Overs to clear B1F and the introductory mission, one month to clear the first Stratum, and to this day I have not cleared the very bottom floor: B25F.

What I always love about the Etrian Odysseys is this natural progression from regular animals to better adapted animals (to fighting explorers) and finally genuine monsters in the post-game. Save for the final story boss, no enemy you fight is a grotesque beast hell-bent on mutilation - they are animals living and evolving in one tough environment. After clearing the story, you unlock an extra Stratum (post-game) where the difficulty sky-rockets as you fight actual monsters. In EO3 the monsters were the very floor we walked on!

Since then I have gone on to play Etrian Odyssey, Etrian Odyssey II, Etrian Odyssey IV, Etrian Odyssey Untold, and Etrian Mystery Dungeon (recently released). Of all these entries, I have only cleared the post-game of Etrian Odyssey IV after a 62 turn battle with the final boss. To give some perspective, a normal encounter is 2 - 3 turns, a boss encounter roughly 18 turns.

I will love if you will lose gold, equipment and items that are not in your bank when you die. They can do this at least in Cyrodill so other players can loot you. I have not reached VR1 yet because I hate the no risk super easy PVE leveling.

Back in the day, we had 12 kids and hoped 2 of them survived to adulthood. And we liked it! You really appreciated your children when you knew they might die of typhus at the drop of a hat. Now with all these "hospitals" and "antibiotics", entitled people expect all their children to survive until adulthood.

Hardcore mode in Diablo would like a word. Also, you lose exp in Path of Exile when you die on the higher difficulties, even in non-hardcore. EVE online, however, is probably the most ruthless, where there is permanent loss of equipment when killed.

But mostly what people are saying is true. Gaming has opened up to a larger market. Catering to the lowest common denominator means more money. Many casual gamers would be put off by a mechanic that severely penalizes them on death.

The games where there are harsh death-penalties still exist. It's just often done in a form that's perceived as more acceptable, or the game as a whole caters to a very specific type of gamer, and sets up it's business model accordingly.

I already have a thread on entitlement easy mode, so I will lay off here. I do have to admit I actually miss challenging corpse runs. I used to specialize in stealth characters just for that reason. Never forget being hired repeatedly at the launch for Vanguard to stealth in and pull everyone's tombstones out of dungeons!

  • RakshaTheKhajiit
Hmm, no one prevents you from deleting your character/gear when you die, so everything is possible except loss of xp (and it wouldn't be punishing enough anyway). Whats the problem?
Do you like to run things in all Khajiit teams? Me too, so don't ever hesitate to contact me in game (@RakshaTheKhajiit, PC NA) if you'd like to be in one of our all Khajiit runs or you need more Khajiit for your runs.

Yeah, yeah. Gaming used to be so great, hardcore, PKs, permadeath, uphill both ways, blah blah blah.

There's a reason a lot of that has gone by the wayside and I say good riddance. However, I would like to see death hurt a little more in some of the newer MMOs if only to encourage people to pay more attention to survivability rather than how big they can make their e-peen on the dps meter.

Wah wah wah Millenials and their instant gratification attutudes got rid of stupid mechanics like xp loss and perma death wah wah wah sob.

    Cry moar plz.

Here is the thing, these mechanics don't exist anymore... because they are crap. It isn't "instant gratification crowd ruining things." People simply have less time than they might have "in the good old days" due to growing up and going to college/getting a job/having kids. People don't wanna spend hours on a character to lose it cuz they died. It is dumb system and if you love it so much stop crying about it on other games' forums and go find a game with the silly systems you desire and spare us your ridiculous ideas on these issues.

Oh also, stop trying to blame Millenials. It is an ignorant and arrogant response to anything. Don't try to lump everyone together or belittle another generation because you are older than them.

That's the downside of megaserver tech (or one of). Homogenises the play experience somewhat. Can't have separate severs for role players, open world PvP (with or without full loot), 'hardcore mode' with harsher death penalties. I wouldn't play mainly on one of these servers, but it would be fun sometimes as an alt.
