Underwater diving - why not?

It seems that MMOs are moving away from this mechanic, which is unfortunate to me. Why is this? EQ was able to implement this 15 years ago. What is the challenge to making this happen?

This sounds like a thread for you!

I'm certain they would be more than willing to talk about that.

Most never touch it in the first place. Heck, most standalone's never touch it in the first place. Morrowind and Oblivion are two of the few that got it right.

The big issue lays in cracks in the world. They're irritating above ground. Get stuck in one while underwater...you drown.
Just because you don't like the way something is doesn't necessarily make it wrong...

I don't know about this. EQ had cracks in it everywhere, but I never encountered them in the water. Perhaps because you control your depth (you don't fall)?

But it's a pretty big part of Elder Scrolls games.... I suggested that it be added here:

I fall through the world often enough now above ground, they can't even handle that clipping. Can you imagine what they would do with underwater or flying?

Let them have some semblance of control on x and y axis before they screw up z axis please.

    Edit:

That being said, I'm all for it. Super fun to treasure hunt and actually be able to kill a slaughterfish or you know do what EP does and take a scroll underwater and die instead of just into the water to die.

I agree.... ESO just doesn't "feel" like a full TES game without it.

Just look at Guild Wars 2 and their BEAUTIFUL underwater content. That's just breathtaking. In ESO you can't even dive.

Work. Developers tend to be lazy. SW:TOR devs and ESO devs as well.

The more I read the forums the more I feel like I should be playing Guild Wars 2.

    @Gidorick

Do you know the Guild Wars 2 underwater content? 1/4 of the whole word is based underwater.

    Here a quick example:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ydrk_vfXLyA

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPSZmt46Ba0

In GW2 there are hidden paths, hidden caves etc. you can only reach by diving or swimming. The whole combat system is different underwater as you get new underwater skills that finally make sense and there are unique weapons you can only use underwater.

I'd be well up for this. One of the best features in GW2 (and most underrated imo) is their underwater gameplay. The most fun I've had exploring a digital world in a long, long time. Archeage do an awesome job of it too (and sailing and pirating).

Rift recently had an expansion with a focus on under-water areas, though not exclusively.

Trouble is doing it well is hard, as Trion's initial attempts showed. I love what Blizzard did in the Vash'jr zone in WOW and the lack of under-water action in ESO shocked me, especially when one considers the fun there was in Morrowind from exploring the deeps.

The other problem with this with ESO is the server lag we are experiencing now. People would dive down and swim a little bit and then we'd all be dead for the lag wouldn't show us that we were out of breath until it was too late. They really need to fix the core issues/bugs of the game before adding in this kind of content IMO.

Oh, now I know why they didn't implement Underwater Content: they didn't want to add another UI element for your breath, it could destroy your immersion. Best way would be just to hold breath in real and rush to the surface again when you need to breathe again.
