Is this game even an Elder Scrolls?

MalumMulier
I feel like this game is a version of WoW! I've been a ES fan since Morrowwind, but this does not feel the same!! Hell its missing huge guilds that make it worth playing, and it does not even compare to Skyrim. If I could find my copy I would rather go play it, instead of loging on this game! With all the money I put into this game, its been release almost a year and I still can't play the way I always have! C'mon with all the ppl that is running/devel this game full-time, I think you can do better!!

This was never intended to be a 'Skyrim plus friends' game. It's an mmo based in the Elder Scrolls lore, but that's it. It's not a continuation of any of the Elder Scrolls series. That's still a Bethesda project, not a ZoS one.
  • MalumMulier
Damn, they really should have said something about that! Now I'm completely bummed, but that does answer a lot of questions!

You talk like someone who has just started playing and expected Skyrim multiplayer.

I've been playing nonstop for a year and i'm still enjoying the game for what it is and not what it is not.

Huh, it's been out a while like you say. This opinion was pretty easy to come by without putting in 'all that money'. Maybe if you are that worried about your money, a little research next time?

I've been a fan of the ES series, it's lore, and it's universe for a very long time as well.
Expecting an MMORPG version of the universe to be just like a single player "only you!" experience is not going to be productive to your expectations. IMHO though TESO does a great job of implementing the universe and it's lore into an MMORPG setting. I was one of "those guys" who read every single in game world book, scroll, and parchment I could find in all of the single player games to the point of being a bit obsessive about it.

Is it a one to one translation of the experience?
Of course not! Expecting that or thinking that is just foolish, but it is very much an "Elder Scrolls" game - just not one of the single player games from Beth and not a literal part of that series - if anything we are a giant prequel to everything we know and love about the single player Beth games.

I've been here since mid beta and while my playtime is limited I've enjoyed every single minute, look forward to many many more, and have never felt like I was not inside the Elder Scroll's Universe.

Hmm, lets see, I've been on since Beta. I expected another Elder Scrolls, non of them has been the same, but they have always out did themselves. Sorry that I expected something like, Morrowwind, oblivion, skyrim, then online. I'm bummed because how I play isn't in the game, and they keep saying they are working on it....

I guess I don't understand the shock value on this one. How were you ever under the impression that this was that type of game? Hearsay, perhaps? This game has been out for a little over a year now. To say something like 'all the money I've put in' is a blatant insult to the people who've been funding this via subscriptions and purchased this prior to beta, let alone console players that have had pre-orders for well over a year just for this title alone.

Agreed with any sentiment about you doing your homework on this one. There are more than enough resources out there that you could have used prior to purchase. This goes for any product you're planning on buying.

Surprised these people are still around even after the hate bandwagon around launch.

Lorewise it feels like it belongs in the Elder Scrolls universe. In many ways the combat is a vast improvement and more interesting (really hate vanilla melee in Skyrim, this game adds some much needed variety and depth). In typical ES fashion there is a lot of flexibility in what your character can do (though not as much as a single-player ES game admittedly). Most of the skills and skill-lines still exist in some form. Much of the game is solo or soloable content, so you don't feel too out of place.

I guess my only issues with the game in the context of this thread are the following.

The game feels too cartoony and exaggerated. The races and atmosphere have in large went from being serious to almost being patronizing, entirely losing the feel the other games had. I particularly hate the way Nords are portrayed in this game. Compare the reserved Greybeards or solemn Companions to the silly voiced Nord in Shadowfen talking about the hist being a dungheap and you'll see what I mean.

I also can't quite understand how the various classes fit into the lore. If Dragonknights are a lost akaviri art, how does my character know it, and more importantly how does every enemy NPC also know it? Probably just my ignorance talking, but seems odd to me.

It's an MMO, with a TES skin. In fact, it's more of an online, single-player game, with a TES skin, with some cooperative/multiplayer features.

It's worth noting (for new folks) that all of the main quest storyline is solo-only ... you cannot group them, at all.

I play the game you mentionetd at the beginning.

Lets me tell you that the difference in favor of TESO is abysmal.

They have no point of comparison.

From the beginning, the developers made it clear that was not the idea to create a Skyrim Online.

The idea was always to create a MMORPG game based on the story of Elder Scrolls, not carry the Elder Scrolls as it is known to the world Online.

In that respect, the work is almost perfect.

By playing TESO you can feel the atmosphere of Elder Scrolls.

    Existing references are undeniable.

The music, art, works worthy of admiration.

Many professionals did their best to create unique pieces.

This game is among the few that make the interaction with NPC pleasant experience both a visual and hearing.

The profile of the art aesthetic remains in a very similar to that given in last chapter of Elder srolls line.

The game has no cartoon atmosphere with silly movements and ridiculous phrase or pseudo tasteless jokes and uncreative as the games you mention.

Got the geographical references, races, the historical background, the ambience, music ....

Yes, for me it is more than obvious that it is based on Elder Scrolls game.

Of course it is not the continuation of the single player Elder Scrolls saga.

    It's Elder Scrolls Online.

I love this game and what it represents.

In my humble opinion, I am a person unable to create something similar.

I can think and have ideas, but would be unable to coordinate and carry out a project of this magnitude.

So, sometimes I find things to improve or which'm not totally agree, but I dare not destructively criticize a huge group of people who managed to give life to something that meets the promised basic objectives and that neither my dreams could create.

I wasn't interested in an Elder Scrolls MMO. I thought it was a terrible idea. Previous Elder Scrolls games allowed me to really become immersed in their worlds, and that's what I liked most about them. However I think MMOs are among the least immersive of game genres out there, mostly due to the presence (and antics) of other players, and the strangely static and sterile worlds many of them build for you.

But I'm an Elder Scrolls fan and so with a slightly heavy heart I decided to check it out, given that huge parts of Tamriel we'd not seen in the games (and some we've not seen in a very long time) were going to be explorable. And I have to say, it feels like an Elder Scrolls game to me.

I still would have rather had a new Elder Scrolls single-player game, but for what it's worth, I think this one is a lot of fun, and will more than do for me until that does actually come along.

It's very much an ES game, it's just not the ES game the OP wishes he was playing instead. That's fine, we all like different things and if a MMO isn't the OP's preferred form of ES then it's easy enough to switch, lost disks or no.

i agree with you completely on that...

the guilds are very small, extremely small and without rooms
