I have them turned on, and they do not clutter at all.

People don't spam say or yell all that often in towns anyway, and I wouldn't even mind if they did.

You could just turn them off.

You can just turn them on also. ;)
People cant turn it on if they dont know they exist.

considering how many people were against them in the first place, keep them off normally and allow those who want them to turn them on. If someone is too lazy too look in the chat box or in the options menu, that is ENTIRELY their fault.

Personal preference. In my eyes even the compass and glow around NPCs are clutter. We all play in different ways. :)

Every poll I've seen in these forums on the topic of chat bubbles has shown the majority of people answering the poll don't want to use them. Don't make something active by default if the majority of people don't want it.

No definately not. If the majority wants it off, then it should be off by default. But in that case, I would still like to see the feature introduced to new players so they know it's there.

    the people have spoken.
Yeah my idea is getting mauled lmfao. I would appreciate if people gave some reasons why they think it's a bad idea though.

They are low res for me, and since it's a new feature better keep it off but remind people that it's there when it's out of beta.
It doesn't really matter tbh, you'll have it on or off and then forget about it.

Game was made to be WITHOUT clutter on screen, so being OFF by default is obvious, people go to settings to ad what they want.

Having to remove things is more annoying than adding
ZoS please understand everyone thinks and pronounces things differently, so please add to your 'rules' that things get removed if the Mod doesn't actually quite understand phrasing

The issue isn't about whether one likes chat bubbles or not, it's about whether it makes more sense to force people who don't like them to turn them off or to force people who do like them to somehow discover that they actually exist and then turn them on. The latter is much less reasonable to me because there will be, and are, undoubtedly numerous people who want chat bubbles that have no idea that this is even an option. You literally have to read through pages of patch notes to learn about this feature. Or, you have to, for some reason, be looking through all of your settings, which is pretty unlikely to happen for anyone other than brand new players.

There'd be nothing wrong with a "did you know that you can enable chat bubbles" tip on a loading screen or something, but not while they're still considered to be in beta.

That's an argument for Lyris telling them they exist, not for having them on by default (especially if Lyris doesn't tell them they can turn them off).

No, but if in the tutorial Z wants to do an information box on it, no prob. I use the chat bubbles in groups, but otherwise just look at the chat box. It's like having billboards all over. Not pretty.

I'm not singling you out, but this argument about bubbles being all over the place when the option is turned on is pretty ridiculous. I've had mine turned on for every type of chat that it allows since they were introduced and have literally not seen a single chat bubble pop up over anyone's head. /Say, /yell, etc., are simply not used often enough, whether chat bubbles exist or not, to cause a problem with cluttering up the screen.

Even the argument that it would create an ugly first impression for new users doesn't make sense. Again, /say and /yell are not used very often, and ZoS starts you in your own private instance. A new player is very unlikely to be bombarded by chat bubbles if they're on by default.

That said, having them at least mentioned in the tutorial and/or in loading screens seems like a reasonable compromise. The problem I have is that people who want to use them most likely don't know about them so they can't "just turn them on." And I'm not sure why everyone is so convinced that most players don't want them. This is a forum poll, which is inherently biased. But chat bubbles have been asked for since beta and the lack of them has hurt the RP community quite a bit. I imagine the game already lost the majority of its RPers, who might've stuck around if this simple option was available earlier. Hence, they're not voting in this forum poll.

And I'm not sure why everyone is so convinced that most players don't want them.
Because there have been a lot of forum polls about chat bubbles, framed in all kinds of different ways, and the one thing that all of those polls have in common is that most people don't want to use them. Myself included. Having said that, I've always said "add them to the game for people who want them, but have them off by default" and I support the idea of letting more people know that they're available. I don't think it's wise for ZOS to be promoting chat bubbles while they're still in beta, though (and the same goes for anything while it's still in beta). I recognize that for some people chat bubbles are a useful tool, and I think people should know about them and be able to choose for themselves if they want to enable them.

    To sum this up:

    * EVERYONE has the ability to look at the options / settings menu to see what one has to work with.

    * It takes mere seconds to just flip a switch which activates this beta-phase feature.

    * Search function / looking at information ZOS has given can alleviate confusion on certain things when one has been gone for prolonged periods of time.

    * In past threads and in-game, this small feature is not desired as default - as this very thread's poll demonstrates.

    * If you want a large amount people to notice your posts in-game (whether for selling items, etc.), you are doing it wrong it you want to use chat bubbles.

    * It's not a like/ dislike concept, those who like it can enable it at any time.

    * Have a tooltip popup if people are THIS hell bent on truly believnig that everyone lacks common sense to look at their settings.

    * It's the player's responsibly to take initiative.

The problem is that the feature is hidden. Many people don't even know it exist.

The reverse may be equally true, most people may not know it can be turned off.

Any way you slice it, there is no excuse for ignorance.

Takes exactly 13.2 seconds to turn it on one time...!?
Just because you don't like the way something is doesn't necessarily make it wrong...

I agree that the reverse could be true about people not knowing it could be turned off. That's why I believe the feature should be introduced somewhere in the game, like a tooltip.

We are all ignorant about some things for some reason. So I disagree on the whole "no excuse for ignorance", but that's another topic :)

Well, like I said in my OP, if it bothers you, turn it off. If it didn't bother you, you wouldn't care wether or not it's on or not. Trying to use say chat (like walking up to someone in real life and saying hello) and knowing they have to look down at the corner to even be able to acknowledge what Im trying to do, is silly in my book. It's one of the first MMO's Ive seen who does not have chat bubbles for regular "say".

What bothers me is the fact that a very little portion of the playerbase uses the feature which makes it useless. But again, what could bother you could be that everyone uses it.

And the solution presents itself. Leave them toggled off and add a synopsis as a loading screen tip. Simple, easy, it's good enough for other system/menu options so it should be good enough for this.

Yeah that could be true. My main interest is the game to be more social and having a stronger and nicer community overall. Elements from other games I've noticed doing a difference are elements I suggest for ESO. it's exciting to see how people feel about those ideas.

Forum polls are heavily biased by default. This is a scientific fact. For instance, the part of my post that you cut out is an explanation of one way in which this happens; many RPers who were asking for this feature since beta have probably quit over it already and so aren't around to vote on this poll. Besides that, though, it's a pretty safe bet that the majority of players of any MMO are not actively using the forums, so what the poll really says is: "The type of ESO players who are inclined to use forums and to vote in polls on those forums that are specifically about chat bubbles do not want them on by default." This is in no way a representative sample of the entire playerbase. In fact, it's pretty much a textbook definition of a useless sample.
