Make loot individual for the love of god

I just found a heavy bag with 2 Deneta runes which I actually needed. I was clearing inventory space so I could pick em up, and someone came and took the bag right in front of my face. Truth be told, Im kinda pissed about that. Why the hell is that even possible? Who thought it was a good idea to make PvE Competitive like this? Is it not obvious that it splits the community?!

Make loot individual so we don't have to fight for loot.

I've edited someone's post into my OP to make sure people don't misunderstand:

Mercykilling:
For those not getting the issue or point the OP is trying to make, I made bold and italicized the relevant statements. Instanced loot(which I've been proposing since closed beta testing, by the way) totally negates any harsh feelings or division among the player base. I get that competition is good, but there's a whole huge zone for competing. It's called Cyrodiil, and you should go there and compete to your heart's content. Now there's a justice system in place so you can open world PvP with those unfortunate enough to participate in that game mechanic and get your "competition" fix. Leave those of us who just want to quest and loot out of your petty desire to beat someone else's pixellated self up or "compete" for resources.

I disagree... And have since beta with these posts. I don't think everything needs to be instanced. There is nothing wrong with a bit if competition.

They instanced all of the wardrobes, barrels etc for the people who wanted things instanced. I still think the nodes and random loot sparks should be left alone.

Most container and enemy loot are individual to the player. Chests and resource nodes are shared. Heavy bags count as resource nodes.

He gave me back the 2 runes when I told him what happened, so it all turned out well. However, I still think instanced loot is better in the long run for the community.

Pretty ignorant statement. I played for 2 months after release of the game, and I have been playing for 1-2 weeks now after a break. Besides, Ive been playing Guild Wars 2 a lot, and GW2 has a very comfortable community because of many different elements of the game. 1 of the reasons is the fact that players enjoy meeting other players.

I've seen the contrast between instanced and none instanced loot, and I've heard arguments defending both of them, however, I still think instanced loot is a better solution.

Next time, think before you talk.

@demonaffinity to be honest you really need to be running with auto-loot, if you unlock a world chest without auto-loot set someone can ninja the contents after you unlock it but before your game client will let you click the now-unlocked chest to open it .. this happened a lot on launch and will happen again when the newbie zones get busy again (if they do).

Have you kept your beta login name for a reason?

    Disagree!

I like this dynamic. The game feels more alive. A tighter sense of community sense it increases the feel of interacting with other players and having an impact on other players.

@Kragorn, chest sniping shouldn't be a thing anymore, unless you exit to another screen.

When you unlock, it auto-opens the first time. Now if you exit after, that's on you, and autoloot won't help you with a full inventory in this circumstance.

You used to literally be able to snatch the chest out from under someone, as it did not automatically open. Unless you've experienced a bug, this has not been an issue for some time.

Besides, the starter zones have chests everywhere...

I think the game has a good balance of individual/shared loot.

A little bit of competition for resources is fine. It took me a while to realize that containers were instanced when I started playing. I'd see someone loot a nightstand, go check it after and find a motif and wonder why the player hadn't picked it up...

Did you close the loot window while clearing space? I've gotten the same thing at times and instead of closing the loot window I open my inventory and destroy some worthless items. When I close the inventory screen the loot window is still open. With this case, I would think that the item would display as "being used" for anyone trying to loot it since I had it open. I haven't ever tested this so don't quote me on that.

That last bit is what I was referring to, I wasn't aware it had been blocked by the chest auto-opening, I set auto-loot right back at the start so it would do that and I've had auto-loot set ever since for that reason. I agree that a full inventory defeats the auto-loot defense.

Thanks for the heads-up on the change that I didn't know about.

I thought it was already. Can't you just hit "I" while you are in the pickup screen to organize your loot, then again to go back to pick up screen? Or does that only work for chests?

I think the top resources should be really hard to transport back to your crafting station, so that it needs some kind of group caravan effort to get them back. And then make it PVP. It would be fun as f*** to have to fight for your voidsteel and your golden tempers against other players before you can craft that fancy metal sword. Fighting over resources will make a fine addition to PVP.

Everyone has had this happen to them at one time or another (if you spend enough time gathering). Some spots are actually quite competitive as far as gathering goes. The better you are prepared the less likely this is to happen; try to make sure you have space in your bags. Early on with very little bag space this can be hard so many people created multiple "mule" alternate characters to store stuff on.

Yep. As far as I can tell, people cannot loot from objects you're already interacting with. This includes the v1.6 update.

Well he's a nicer guy than me then. I'd have laughed to myself and muttered something about entitlement.

This happens to me all the time... go to pick up a resource node, monster appears, and while fighting it another player runs up and grabs the node. Stuff happens. Move on and don't worry about it.

I had the same experience the other day. I unlocked a chest, found more worthwhile items in it than usual and realised I didn't have enough free slots, so was just deleting a couple of items when someone came along. Whether he brought it with him or it was coincidental I don't know, but a mob appeared in front of the chest at the same time and while I was killing it the guy helped himself to the contents of the chest. I thanked him for helping himself, and moved on but that sort of thing is a tad frustrating.

I think it's fine the way it is.

Besides, things like this give you an excellent insight on the human being personality and allow you to pick your friends. For example, the recruitment form in my guild asks the player if they leave the worms behind when collecting plants.
