Too much downtime

I have been playing for almost a month and am getting pretty fed up with the long maintenance shutdowns , the frequent updates , and the size of the updates . I have a slow connection , not by choice , and have to wait for 2 to 3 days for the download to finish . Dominating the internet for that period of time has not made for a happy wife . Don't know how much longer I can continue this , even though I really enjoy the game .

It has been almost 7 hours and you are still down . Then I have to worry about the size of the update that is to come . Just did a big one a few weeks ago and can't handle another one .

They've already posted that the size of this update is 1-2 gb. Compared to other updates, that's pretty miniscule.

People still use dial up Internet? Damn that sucks!
"And it's important to state that our decision to go with subscriptions is not a referendum on online game revenue models. F2P, B2P, etc. are valid, proven business models - but subscription is the one that fits ESO the best, given our commitment to freedom of gameplay, quality and long-term content delivery. Plus, players will appreciate not having to worry about being "monetized" in the middle of playing the game, which is definitely a problem that is cropping up more and more in online gaming these days. The fact that the word "monetized" exists points to the heart of the issue for us: We don't want the player to worry about which parts of the game to pay for - with our system, they get it all."

Yeah.. it's just bad timing on your part.

The patches are usually not as large as update 6.

Down time are usually not this long (for Tamriel Unlimited)

most maintenance's only last a couple of hours. this update and the previous one were large updates. these large updates happen once every 6-8 weeks, or at least that used to be the schedule.

seeing as you say you only have played for a month means that you dont know this.

File transfer download speed is not comparable to running the game client with an internet connection.

The amount of data transferred during active play is miniscule compared to downloading large data build files.

I honestly don't know why people can't tell the difference.

Still update 6 didn't take this long and this patch is only 1-2 Gigs. I get they are updating other things but they said on PTS over a week ago they had been testing the "other things" like subs vs non subs, accounts etc and still here we are, seven hours and counting...ugh....

What do you think this is ArenaNet?

Patches and major changes are no excuse. Expect downtime weekly with Zenimax.

GW1 was down for about 24hrs in 7 years. GW2 has been down a few hours since launch.

Considering most of the changes for unlimited has already been made and downloaded in update 6. That was a huge update. This one is small in comparison and should have not taken no longer than a normal weekly patch. This is instead truning out to be as long as update 6 downtime.

I remember way more downtime than that with GW1 at launch... Maybe my memory's just messing with me, though, it's been nearly a decade.

I find it really hard to believe you only have access to one form of entertainment, let alone only enjoy this one entertainment item...that said, downtime is usually spread out, it's just a special time right now

Unfortunately -- it isn't their fault. Internet can be expensive, but the speed you download things mostly relies on you. At this given time the patches WILL be big, mostly because they are implementing new features and switching the model to buy to play.

The game would break if they didn't do weekly maints. This kind of thing happens in EVERY MMO that I've played and it's just a once a week kind of thing. Fortunately for me, I was blessed with having a home with good internet. :(
I wish I could share it and I am sorry that it has been taking away from the fun for you. Also sorry that your waifu doesn't get to enjoy her interweb time, either.

Don't give up -- the game is amazing.

    Yeah, totally agree on this.

Been playing for a couple of weeks and damn these downtimes are annoying. You'd think a game that's having its players pay $15/m would have better ways to update their games, like GW2(no monthly subscription).

Hell, even RuneScape didn't have these long downtimes lol.
