They will be mostly separated. I don't expect many truly new players in craglorn or cyrodiil for a while.

Lol they better be. The servers are lagging to a standstill this morning, and thats with a ghosttown population.

Can only imagine what its going to be like once the wave hits. People will be thinking they walked into a dialup internet time warp.
  • Archaegeo
    Archaegeo
    Yeah,

They will instantly lose potential returning players if we come back to a horrid experience because they weren't prepared for the rush

Have they addressed the lag that is happening without all the new players?

I've been playing low level alts the last two weeks and it's way over-crowded in the 1-30 zones. Best estimate is around 'slightly less than the beta weekends'. It's abysmal trying to find anything to kill and half my quests just auto update without any intervention on my part (because so many people killing quest mobs/spamming dialogs).
  • Archaegeo
    Archaegeo
Yeah, I have a feeling Tuesday at this rate will be unplayable in low level zones

Will be nice to have a population, but will just as quickly lose them if they feel gameplay sucks

Why would new servers fix lag?

Do you know what the CPU/task load level is on the existing servers?
    How about the memory load?
    Network load?
    I/O load?

Maybe the lag is completely in the client software?
...are you going to get a new computer?

Bit hit and miss on this really. On the one hand in MMO's people usually weather this fairly well - they expect a player shockwave / the resulting lag and (providing theres enough interest in reaching further into the game) come out on the other side regardless with a few ruffled feathers.

On the other, with ZoS messing up the starter areas/bypassing them now completely, you push people into a huge area right off the bat - which may make people feel like escaping this 'initial wave', is a process with no light at the end of the tunnel. Its one huge zone before you move on.

Normally MMO starter zones are fairly confined and to the point, and I think ZoS have missed out on utilizing the former starter areas (like khenarthi's roost) as a pressure valve for the incoming tides.

Likely the congestion in Auridon will be a nightmare (its none too great today on the lag/latency front and the zone was fairly empty 7-9am+). Guess we'll see when the time comes.

I'm planning to go greet the new people in AD so lets hope theres happy people and not lag frustrated ones -_-

With pop caps and considering how the main server is normally pop caped in the evening how would anything change?

There won't be new servers, but it's very likely that they'll add at least one or two (but possibly even more) new PvP campaigns, which essentially act as "servers" for the PvP part.

Other zones (like Rift, Stormhaven, Auridon, etc.) will continue to create copies of themselves as needed just like they did all the time since release. There are multiple copies or even "servers" if you want, but you won't notice them.

I don't expect the TU release to have any significant impact on actual PvP (other than the campaigns being filled more often), since there's a population limit on the campaigns and that will stay in place, so the maximum number of players in the zone won't be touched, no matter whether 100k, 1m, 10m or 100m players play the game.

Here's the thing. Server clusters ( or "megaservers" as some devs call them ) are only as good as the tech purchased and implemented.

EvE Online for example has the most cutting edge server cluster tech available and CCP paid out the nose for it for the benefit of their customers playing experience as well as presenting the best face toward the gaming world at large, not to mention the cost benefit of not having constant crashes or other unplanned downtime from over-stressed servers in the cluster.

Until publishers like Zenimax are willing to spend money to make money, you'll have midrange server clusters struggling to chug along as Zenimax tries to cram as many tuna ( customers ) in the can ( server ) as possible for max profits.

Paul Sage recently posted that new/more hardware isn't going to help with performance in Cyrodiil, so it is not a stretch to suspect that this answer applies to PvE performance issues as well.

If better hardware won't help at all, then that means the only place to put the blame is on the programmers coding the game. Well, so much for that.

People are constantly saying "prepare for lag", but when the game first came out, there wasn't much lag and they've added EU servers since. People are complaining that there's currently lots of PVE lag, but I haven't experienced much, if any.

PVP also won't really be affected because it's capped out at a certain amount of players per campaign, so I can't see that being an issue. Well, it won't be any laggier than it currently is, anyway :P

There will be 4 megaservers in total, 2 for PC and 2 for Console.

1 for EU PC and 1 for NA PC.

1 for EU Console and 1 for NA Console.
