Agreed, it does nothing for this problem, nothing is broken that can be fixed except by a programmer. ;)

I get this quite often after a new patch; closing and reopening the launcher a few times sorts it out for a while. It happens less often using "run as administrator" but still occurs sometimes.

209 error /"REPAIR" alternating with NO ERROR AND "PLAY"
This is not a permanent 209 error....sometimes is works sometimes it doesnt.
    Normally following hot fixes.

To anyone else with 209....dont bother with the launcher ..find the eso.exe file under programs files and double click it.
    Its a workaround at least.

Not had this problem on any machine since the patch, and in absence of anything in the patch notes I would assume ZOS didn't knowingly fix it it just 'went away' .. meaning it may well come back sometime. :(

    Greetings!

The Error 209 issue refers to a corrupt Patch Manifest download and installation. There are a few causes identified for this, and if you have submitted a support ticket one of our CS representatives will be happy to work with you directly to determine what is causing it for you specifically.

If you have not been able to successfully patch your game client, you may run into problems launching directly from the .exe file with incomplete game data, so it is important to ensure you have a successfully patched client when the game is patched and updated!

The best troubleshooting that has worked for players has been mentioned in this thread already. Running as administrator, and running through a launcher repair should allow your launcher to patch properly. If it does not, there are a few further ways to get through this error that's occurring.

We can put these behind a spoiler tag to avoid the wall of text taking up more space than required here!
Once you have run as admin and repaired the launcher, you may proceed with the following:
1.Locate the launcher folder. The default location is C:\ProgramFiles (x86)\Zenimax Online\Launcher.
2.Make a copy of the launcher folder and rename that copy "Launcher back up"
3.Open the initial/non-copied Launcher folder and delete all "host developers files"that are marked with a number. For Example: host developer1, hostdeveloper2, etc.
4.The only file that should remain in that folder is the host developer file that is not marked with a number and is created the day of the re-install.
5.Close Everything and then Reopen the Launcher.

If you continue to get the error and a "repair" option, you can try the following:

Deleting version files & Repairing (Windows)
1.Locate the "\The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited" or "\The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited EU" directory.◦By default, located at "C:\Program Files (x86)\Zenimax Online\The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited" or "C:\Program Files (x86)\Zenimax Online\The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited EU"
    2.Expand the Game Options
3.If the menu reads, Updating…. Click Cancel.
4.If the menu reads, Installing…. Restart the launcher. Upon restart the menu should read Updating… (or Update if auto-updates are turned off). Click Cancel if applicable.
5.Locate the Depot folder. Within that folder, locate and delete the "depot.version" file.
6.Locate the Game folder. Within that folder, locate and delete the game_player.version file.
7.If applicable, locate the VO_EN folder. Within that folder, locate and delete the vo_en.version file.
8.If applicable, locate the VO_FR folder. Within that folder, locate and delete the vo_fr.version file.
9.If applicable, locate the VO_DE folder. Within that folder, locate and delete the vo_de.version file.
    10.Restart the computer.
    11.Open the game launcher.
12.In the game options menu click Repair
13.If the game disappeared and does not show up as installed before you could click repair:1.Click install.
2.Once data starts downloading, restart the launcher.
3.Expand the game option, it should say Updating…, click Cancel.
    4.Click Repair.

Deleting version files & Repairing (Mac OSX)
1.Locate the "\The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited" or "\The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited EU" directory.◦By default, located at "Applications -> ZeniMax Online -> The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited" or "Applications -> ZeniMax Online -> The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited EU"
2.Expand the Game Options menu (Cog wheel located above the News Feed).
3.If the menu says, Updating…. Click Cancel.
4.If the menu says, Installing…. Restart the launcher, Upon restart the menu should read Updating… (or Update if auto-updates are turned off). Click Cancel if applicable.
5.Locate the Depot folder. Within that folder, locate and delete the depot.version file.
10.In the game options menu click Repair.
11.If the game disappeared and does not show up as installed before you should click repair:1.Click Install.
2.Wait for data to start downloading.
    3.Restart the launcher.
4.Expand the game option, it should say Updating…, click Cancel.
    5.Click Repair.

Please note: In order for the above steps to fully work, players should restart their computer. These steps are also available on our ESO Help YouTube Channel.

The final option is to uninstall the game client and then reinstall it completely.

If customers are still encountering the "PatchManifestError_VersionFailMessage" after trying all of the above steps, they should contact our Customer Support team for further assistance. Please include a Host.Developer and Game Consultant file when submitting a ticket.

Instructions for creating the ESO Game Consultant file can be found here: https://help.elderscrollsonline.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/6690/.

Instructions for creating the Host.Developer file can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eY99--fwl14.

Thanks and as always, if you're unsure of how to perform any of these steps or still experiencing a problem, please feel free to submit a support ticket and one of our customer support agents will be happy to help you out!

    Greetings!

The Error 209 issue refers to a corrupt Patch Manifest download and installation.
Sorry, that may be one reason but clearly not the only one. If you read this thread you'll see the error is random which clearly proves there is no 'corrupt Patch Manifest' on our systems, unless you're trying to argue simply running the Launcher, getting the Repair button and then exiting without doing a repair can somehow arrange for an immediate re-run of the launcher to work.

I had the problem on THREE PCs, all patched independently connecting via two different ISPs, it's kind of implausible they'd all get a corrupt file .. even if one ignores the evidence that sometimes the launcher would work and sometimes not.

I know you're trying to be helpful @ZOS_MollyH but the evidence I and many others in this thread have shows the situation you describe is NOT what we are (or, now it seems, were) suffering from.

It's important that players go through these troubleshooting steps so that we can take more specific and individualized paths into resolving this issue should we have to do so. While the above steps may not resolve the issue every time for every player, they do resolve it more often than not.

If you have performed all of the above steps the next time error 209 occurs, please reach out to support for an agent to work with you one-on-one to resolve your specific issue with this error. If you have already reached out to support, please feel free to let us know your ticket number so we can try to get you some more specific information with it!
