Out in the wilderness, there still are. There are a ton of delves with massive stockpiles of provisioning containers.
Anyway, the other way is to buy your groceries like a civilized person. All ingredients (except for the two tied to purple recipes (oats and tomatoes on live, but they have new names on 1.6)) are available for 10g a piece.
Brewers now have drink ingredients, and chefs now have a full stock of food ingredients. You might need to hunt down the grocers for specific ingredients. I'm not sure, but I didn't see anything that would have required that.
OK, I'll hold my hands up, I skimmed through the thread, and missed Starkerealm's mentioning of the grocers.
That's not the point, yes there are a FEW crates in various places, however by a huge order the biggest concentration of containers are in the cities .. where you'll open yourself up to PVP if you try to get stuff there.Bel Shezzar wrote: »I'm sure there are all kinds of places in the world where you could find such things!

So far, that doesn't seem to be the case at all. 95% of the containers I've seen are private. This includes crates and barrels on city docks.
Now of course you can make the argument that this is realistic since all items in town in crates and baskets technically belong to someone, but provisioning is a major part of the game and many people are concerned that they will be forced to draw the wrath of the local guards just to make a pie. Many assurances were given that this wouldn't be an issue.
Hopefully this gets adjusted before 1.6 goes live, because right now almost every container is going to require a burglar. At least in town.
EDIT: It was mentioned in this thread that most of the mats required for food/drink can be purchased from chefs/brewers. This indeed appears to be the case. I had only checked the grocer before making this post. Just about everything you need can be bought for 10g from Grocer/Brewer/Chef. It didn't occur to me to check brewer/chefs because this change is also new with 1.6
My apologies for being mistaken. It would appear that we can buy our groceries like civilized folk, or we can steal them from civilized folk.
Purple recipe mats are a different matter. At least that is the word on the street.

This has been confirmed. I didn't realize you could buy 90% of the required mats from chefs/brewers now. I had only checked the Grocers before I created this thread. My apologies.

I don't want to be too coy, but you may have answered your own question here.
I'm sure there are all kinds of places in the world where you could find such things! No need to resort to crime about it.
Unless you want to.
Right, well in all fairness, city docks are (were) by far the easiest and most accessible place to farm provisioning mats. As well as warehouses. I am currently searching for different places that fit the bill as "lawless" or "unsavory" locations to find provisioning food. There are some crates in dungeons of course and the occasional bandit camps. But make no mistake about it - It will definitely require more footwork. Unless you want to steal it of course.
They changed their mind about selling ingredients at chefs and brewers a while back on the PTS, so on live grocers are going to be your only source for purchasing ingredients (well, other than buying them from guild stores or other players).I'm sorry for necroing this thread, but I can't find any chefs or brewers with ingredients on Live. They have finished food and drinks for sale, but no ingredients.
The grocer has some veggies for sale and that's it.
At this point I can only find my ingredients by stealing from containers.
I will have to check later in the delves, but I only have one character above lvl 10, and her inventory is filled, so it will take a bit before I can out there.

Having said that, I'm not sure why the grocer you're trying to buy from only has veggies for sale. My understanding was that they were supposed to sell everything except for the rare ingredients that only come from hirelings.
There's also another really good way of getting ingredients that doesn't require stealing them, searching in delves, or buying them: do provisioning writs. Seriously, the rewards for provisioning writs are totally worth it compared to the small investment in ingredients that you put into them. Unless things have changed for them since the last time I checked on PTS, anyway.

This is the grocer I am trying to buy from:
[img][/img]
He stands in the harbour in Vulkhel Guard. I don't know if he is special and only has a limited supply?
Thanks for the advice about Writs, I can only agree. It is because I am doing writs I am running into problems getting what I need.
I get low-level writs, that ask for poultry, white meat, wheat, rice and rye. I can buy the carrot, corn and apples at the grocer.
The few writs I have been able to make have given me ingredients for recipes that I have never seen be used for writs. But they do give ingredients and also a fair amount of them, I just wish they would give ingredients I could use for something
It feels like the balance is off for low-level and new characters imho.
Is there new recipes out? vr14?
I really don't understand why they don't balance this out a little bit and have containers that are sitting outside, but not around a vendor's space be free to loot. All the other ES games allowed this. But if you tried to take something from inside a house, it would be considered stealing.
Also, groceries can be purchased for 150g, not 10g like they originally announced which really sucks.
But I have found a few places outside of towns that I can loot certain ingredients from, so I am mostly ok.
Hum balance... Ok balance... If i want to make a potion 99% of the time i have to go outside of the town to find some mat. If i want some light or medium armor, i have to go hunt for it outside of town. If i want some heavy armor, i have to dig a lot around and again outside of town...wait i forgot that if i want some wood i also have to go outside... and you want to be able to pick up your mat inside the town without impunity or risk and say it's not balanced??? Where is the lol button when you need one...
If they balanced the thing like you want they would have to add 100's of tree trunks mat, flower mat, ore mat, etc inside the wall of the town to equal the number of container you can loot. Not only that but only available to you since if i remember correctly when you loot a container like a barrel, create you only looted for yourself. Some else can come and looted too.
Provisioning is the easiest of the lot. I reached lvl 50 on a character before he even reached lvl 20. I only needed one blue recipe that was lvl 10 and i was flying all the way to 50.
Note : yes you can find some flower, wood, metal inside a town but it's not even close to equal the number of lootable container we had before.
I have zero issues with finding ingredients in the new system. Stealing is easy, it just takes a little more time than before - and it's balanced by the stacks I get from hirelings and writs.
We were always stealing, the game just didn't inform us of it. Did you think it was moral to walk into someone's house and rummage through their things? To loot every basket in an inn? To read people's private correspondence? Did you think that apple grove belonged to no one, that dozens of baskets filled with harvested apples just appeared out of thin air?redwoodtreesprite2 wrote: »I have zero issues with finding ingredients in the new system. But some of us don't want to steal in the game. I always play my characters as very moral. I will never do any stealing in this game.
What you're not taking into account there is the fact that the number of ingredients required to make a recipe has decreased. Recipes that used to take 2 ingredients now only take 1.150g for food at a Grocer that used to cost 63g is a bit of a p-off. That is far, far too much. 80g would have been more reasonable,
