I think that might be the other extreme
I think the approximate production costs for an appropriate quest for something like this should be in the 30-100k range.
Why would you think pressing a button would cost 30-100k?
Well, i think it really depends on what you have in mind. I think a $4 dlc should bring me at least 30 minutes of content along with the shiny little item.

You cant even buy a cosmetic costume for $4. I think you are going to be disappointed. The DLC stuff in this game is going to be alot more than $4 unless you mean like the store bought mounts etc. I dont count that stuff as DLC in this particular game.
As far as adding a NPC and making it force you into a half hour fed ex quest to get an item you paid for thats just crazy. Who would wish to do that? Adding an npc who would add some dialogue and then give you the item would take literally minutes to code.

That's the whole point of this thread. To say that I am disappointed that this community would be willing to pay $4 for a vanity item (similar to horse armor). Instead, ZoS should be forced (by market pressure) to provide meaningful content and the vanity item for that $4.
I could see them experimenting with this idea. Offering 2 different prices: a lower one for the one with the quest and a higher one for the one without the quest. That way the people who want the added quest or had fewer crowns and the time to do the quest would pay the lower price and the people who wanted to save the time could just pay the higher price.

You expect meaningful content for $4? You cant even buy a latte at starbucks for $4. I think you expect far too much for far too little.

:'(
You're not getting my point.
People should pay more for the one with the quest, because they want to enjoy the content. and because it has a production cost.
The point is that the content is supposed to be fun. This is a game. It is supposed include, stories, adventure, and gameplay. Not a freaking platform to sell meaningless garbage.
I completely agree... actually I agree so much, I mentioned a similar thing myself: http://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/discussion/149494/in-game-crown-store-integration-concept

I think you expect far too little. And that's why b2play and free to play models destroy games. Because the types of people that are replying to this thread are the ones that do not demand content for their money. They will pay millions of dollars as a community for meaningless crap...and therefore there is no incentive for the studio to produce anything other than meaningless crap.

So you expect them to code an entire zone with meaningful quests, voice acting and meaningful rewards for a whole $4? Stop being cheap. The reason they make meaningless stuff is people whine too much over a couple of bucks. You cant even walk into the place I eat lunch for $4. A beer is $6. This game isnt made for kids who deliver papers for a $1 a day.

It's been in the $2.20s around here for months...

Been average of $3-4 for years since bush was president. Some places are cheaper than others.

I don't know who you people are that are agreeing with this guy, but I can confirm that:
"On April 3rd, 2006, Bethesda Game Studios released the first DLC for the game The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, charging $2.50 for access to an item called “Horse Armor.”[4] Once installed, the player could visit an Orc non-player character (NPC) and receive a set of armor to be placed on a horse (shown below). While the first set was free, each subsequent horse armor purchase would cost the player 500 gold."
@brandalf it would be nice if you got your information straight before you posted...thanks.
And after a very short time, it was down to $1.99. https://web.archive.org/web/20070306005225/http://obliviondownloads.com/StoreCatalog_ProductList.aspx?SubCategoryId=1geoffreyb14_ESO wrote: »Horse armor was criticised/ a laughing stock because of it's initial price point($15 or $20). Yeah, no, I'm on the west coast. This time last year it was wandering around the $4 mark... look, man, you need to get out more.
Good Golly Miss molly,
So much hate for the crown shop
Can't wait for the first skimpy outfit or a set of swim suits to hit the crown store
The Lore hounds will all have heart failure
So... you wanna play for free and get all the stuff for free?.. Nice, but ZOS needs money to create new content for the game. What if, instead of just selling these items outright in the Crown Store, they made them quest rewards and delivered actual content?
geoffreyb14_ESO wrote: »We all laugh at how pathetic the original DLC for Oblivion was....you know....the Horse Armor.
Are we just falling for it all over again? Is a wedding dress, or a jester's outfit, or even a mount that much different from "horse armor" ?
What if, instead of just selling these items outright in the Crown Store, they made them quest rewards and delivered actual content?
One of the problems with the game, in general, is a lack of interesting rewards for quests. Yet, it's evident that there are tons of things that people think would be cool to buy in the Crown Store. So why not create stories around these items and offer them as rewards? Wouldn't that be so much better?
Spending 2 bucks for a half hour quest that rewards a wedding dress because you "saved the wedding" is so much more engaging than just opening the Collections Tab and immediately finding it unlocked.
I know, i know...people are going to say "but it takes time and effort to create those quests." Well...that's what game companies do, they create games. And that's why we pay extra for premium content.
geoffreyb14_ESO wrote: »The point of my original post was to open a discussion about whether they should tie these items to actual content and not simply sell the bare items. If they successfully monetize bare items then there is no reason to create actual content. While it's true that they need to create content to keep players engaged to make the items desirable, I would argue that the content would be there to support the sale of the items and not the other way around.
Bottom line for me is that they should be selling us content as the primary source of renewable revenue and not modern day horse armor.
