What's the deal with jumping?

I honestly blame Morrowind and Oblivion. If you ran around jumping it would raise acrobatics and you could eventually jump on water! It was twice as fast to jump over water than swimming.

IIRC in Oblivion, acrobatics raised much faster in you suffered some damage as a result of your jumping. Mere running around jumping was a slow process comparatively. I don't know how times I killed myself jumping off a certain hill near the Imperial City.

Well there are none for PvE, but jumping in PvP may give you an edge. In some PvP games jumping around can get your opponent to miss(if aim is required) or to get their skills to not activate(in some tab target games). It really depends on the movement speed though. If you have a speed boost generally this will work, but if you're snared(or character movement is naturally slow), then it will put you at a disadvantage(especially if it's a fps since a player can easily predict where you will land).

Now for ESO there are no advantages, but as the saying goes, old habits die hard.

Personally I would like to see jumping cost a bit of stamina, if only to cut down on bunnypeople... ;)
I mean, if sprinting takes a bit of effort, jumping ought to as well. Swimming too, come to think of it... and then maybe a athleticism skill line that has passives to lower that cost again...
Ah, one can dream, right? :)

Bunny hopping has been a long time practice in fps games. Particularly those with rocket jumping. I'd say it could be a carryover behaviour from some of those games.

Morrowind and Oblivion have acrobatics skill.
    Oblivion:Acrobatics
    Morrowind:Acrobatics

IMO Bethesda decide to make Skyrim more simple (some would say more casual) and there is no such skill there.

More of annoyance in BF. Seriously immersive breaking, I am sure seal team 6 didn't bunny hope when completing missions.

Really though I haven't really seen anyone constantly jump in this game, maybe that's because of the stamina resources mentality. Sure wish most FPS has that so bunny hoppers couldn't run when they constantly did that.

The game has a huge problem with even small stones the character getting hung up on way to many times i've dodge rolled in place do to small obstructions. Jumping around to clear areas is required.

Oblivion had jumping building up acrobatics too, you needed it for big jumps.
I mean jumping constantly while fighting in MMOs. I've been perplexed by this habit since like 2002. Once I load up a gameplay video made by a jumping addict, that's all I can think about. Please, stop jumping so much, y'all. I mean you don't have to, but for the sake of me, some anonymous dude on the internet, please stop jumping.

    (Not serious... But really, wtf?)

Some people do it so you know they aren't a bot or NPC, doesn't always work though (seriously, heard a guy comment about someone stealing the boss he was waiting for, and he was jumping so people saw him and knew, didn't work). It becomes habit for all MMOs for them.

Others forget jumping doesn't build up acrobatics skill, or cause health to regen faster (seemed to in Skyrim, but might have just been distracting myself so time moved quicker).

I actually jump at times to give me am advantage in PvP  Nerf jump!

If I jump in the air I can retain the movment speed I had while running and charge a heavy attack while airborne. This is really key for me as I move allot in PvP.

Also, I use a bow in PvP so I get the bonus movement speed after rolling. If I time this correctly I can roll, then sprint away, then just when my 2 secconds are up I can jump in the air, look behind me while retaining my momentum, direction and speed (even if I'm airborne when the buff goes away) and then roll again as soon as I hit the ground and repeat. This allows me to move almost as fast as a boltting sorc and is much cheaper!

When using magnum shot, jumping in the air allows me to knock my own tune further back as I am starting from a higher vantage point, follow this with a crit rush!

And finnaly, if you jump while moving and an opponent uses a gap closer (crit rush for example) you do not suffer that pesky immobilize that all target based gap closers currently give to their targets.

You are right however, I jump out of necessity and how it can help my play, not because game physics allow me to jump my toons hieght with no effort.

The absolute fastest way in both Morrowind and Oblivion was to find a low space to jump in so you could rapidly mash the jump button/key. You could level in seconds this way.

Your horse disappears in knee-deep water, but a heavy-armor knight can continuously jump while running from one end of the map to the other.

    Yeah, perfectly logical.
[I'd insert 'rolls eyes' animated gif here, for emphasis, if this stupid forum software was user friendly.]
It wouldn't be that much more immersion breaking than just floating.

Jumping should cost stamina, and lots of it for a heavy-armor penalty.

It's a dirty tactic used by FPS players who have no skill. I hated it in FPS's and I hate it in MMO's where it is less or not effective. Personally, I always called for jumping to reduce stamina at an accelerated rate, and then debuffed your stamina regen rate to penalize you for doing it.

I used to do that in PvP settings in other games where lag or just plain bad design made it hard to tell if I was rooted or snared. The jumping let me know that those effects weren't there more easily. Funny that I do find it annoying now. :)

They should make jumping cost a lil bit of stamina...like very little stamina. Jumping in heavy armor swining and huge sword doesn't make any sense. Plus you can do it all day without breaking a sweat. If you run 10 ft you get exhuasted though. It really throws all the beautiful gameplay and lore out of the window when everyone is getting froggy.
