1.6 destroys ZOS's own featured Sorc build?

Battlemaster’s Corner – Lightning Tornado

From the above article:

"Critical Surge (Surge) – My entire build hinges on this ability being active at all times. It gives health up to 65% of critical weapon damage dealt, even from weapon-based abilities. Once morphed, you’ll understand the power of critical hit damage and barely see your health bar drop in combat."

"Lightning Form (Boundless Storm) – This ability really adds high damage for targets near me, but it does so much more. Boundless Storm not only increases my armor and spell resistances to overcharged, but it gives a huge speed boost for chasing down enemies. This is the Lightning; next comes the Tornado."

"Whirlwind (Steel Tornado) – Remember when I said you can get up to 65% health back for critical hits? Once morphed, this ability hits enemies within an 11-meter radius! Moreover, it gets more effective the lower the enemies' health. With the two abilities above active, you’ll have overcharged armor, lightning damage to all nearby targets, and self-heals for everyone hit by Tornado (NOT ANYMORE!). The combination thus far is jaw-dropping, but we’re not done..."

From the 1.6 patch notes:

Surge - Critical Surge: This ability now has a one second cooldown on the heal.

That means trying to survive AOE as a melee Sorc is now pointless as this heal will be completely useless to mitigate the AOE and multi-target damage you will be taking! One tick from Boundless Storm or Steel Tordnado on ONE target and you get no heals for another second, even if that tick was only for 54 damage!

Critical Surge is now a completely pointless waste of an ability point that ruins the melee options for what is already the most pigeon-holed one-trick-pony class in the game! This leaves Sorc as the only class in the game without any meaningful class-based self heals.

But the didn't stop there...

From the above article:

Ultimate – Negate Magic (Absorption Field) – Probably the second-best ultimate in the game (next to Standard of Might), Absorption Field stuns, heals, and prevents people from casting (NOT ANYMORE!) I like to use Crystal Fragments to slow them down, throw a dagger to slow them, and bang! drop a field on them and destroy them.

From the 1.6 patch notes:

Negate Magic - Supression Field (morph): This ability has been redesigned (to useless), and now applies the Minor Protection buff to your allies inside the field.

Negate Magic - Absorption Field (morph): This ability has been redesigned (to useless). Allies who pass through the field now gain the buffs Major Expedition, Major Intellect, Major Fortitude, and Major Endurance for 12 seconds.

This ultimate (the only Sorc-class ultimate really worth taking) is now to be an utterly useless and situational group buff, and thus the only decent trick that Sorc's had without going full skirt and staff vampire bat swarming is now gone. No more stun, no more heal, no more silence!

Seriously, what is ZOS thinking? It is like they took the class that was struggling the most with adaptability and took away their best options to do anything but the cookie cutter build. I guess we're all supposed to use pets now and sit there mashing curse and ward.

One thing is certain, they have completely destroyed their own featured Sorcerer build with these changes. They should probably just take that article down. :(

I don't have the disk space ATM to get the PTS, but I am seriously hoping that the "Major Resolve" and "Major Ward" buffs from Lightning Form are good enough to compensate for the loss of Critical Surge. Nothing in the notes can compensate for the loss of Negate.

    Lightning Form
    • Lightning Form now lasts for 15 seconds and grants you the Major Resolve and Major Ward buffs.
    • Thundering Presence (morph): This ability now starts at 20 seconds and increases in duration by one second with each rank.
    • Boundless Storm (morph): This ability now grants the Major Expedition buff for 6 seconds. This duration increases with reach rank, up to a duration of 7 seconds at Rank 4.

I have no idea what the "Major Expedition" buff does either...

Yeah, people have commented on this, especially in the thread about forcing sorcs to use a summoner build (will not use the term pet here).

It's a shame, because after I reached VR1 I converted my sorc to this build, he had been a summoner sorc before, and I found this build fun.

I am now forced to revert back to summoner, which I had already maxed out, no choice in the matter at all.

The notes are just notes of changes does not mean stuff that is on live now is not on the Pts now.I pop on the pts and there is changes and other stuff that did not change on the Pts that is not in the notes. So yeah do not believe just the notes.

I agree. ZoS is going down the same road with WoW warlock. I know how that dance goes. They nerfed fear a CC a warlock depended on to survive to break on a damage cap. This made it much less useful in PvP given its 1.5 second cast time and warlocks not having a proper defense usually mean death

Fortunately there was this build that now become more prominent with the fear nerf Soul Link/ Siphon life, a drain tank build where you would put half you points in affliction and the other in demonology where your summoned pet, voidwalker (When active gave a 10% physical reduction) would take the majority of the damage with 20% transfer when you sustain the hit while the warlock Doted every enemy with siphon life and drain life.

The community became angry and said the game should be about players not their pets and Blizzard comply and furthered nerfed this new build. It took an expansion and massive lack in people playing warlocks to rebalance the class.

THIS IS GOING TO HAPPEN TO SORCERERS IF THIS BUILD GOES LIVE.

People will complain that playing PvP is about going against players and will cry for a huge nerf to the pets damage output. Then we have literally a broken class for a year when they decide to release new content.

Eitherway the 1 cd to critical surge was uncalled for. It wasn't god mode in PvP as when you were focused on you would die quite easily. At most it was a utility to help the sorcerer stay in the and continue to use damage without have to step out and heal.

Honestly the heal of critical surge should be base line for surge and critical surge should have new buff that would work well with stamina sorcerers.

From what I have seen on the PTS Major Resolve and Major Ward increase your Armor and Spell Resistance by 5120 and Major Expedition increases your movement speed by 40% for 6 seconds.

Well, I think 1.6 destroys some old builds (not just for Sorcs), but brings also some new, pretty interesting too.
I have just watched Deltia's comparison of classes in 1.6, and it looks that with a right build Sorcs still can " kick ass". And I count on it ;-)

Another case of the PVE game being nerfed to the ground to pander to PVP QQ then.

OP needs to play the PTS not just assume they know what's going on by the patch notes they have trouble interpreting apparently. The patch notes are CHANGES not full skill descriptions, unless stated nothing has been taken away from skills such as base ability of Negate to silence.

    NEGATE
Create a globe of magic suppression, stunning enemies within and dispelling enemy placed effects for 9.6 seconds. Enemy players will be silenced rather than stunned.

Absorption Field –(ADDS) Grants movement speed and resources regeneration for those entering the area.

Suppression Field – (ADDS) Allies take less damage while inside radius.

It remains strange that ZOS took the most struggling class and nerfed to the ground the classes two best abilities (which were wildly inferior to many abilities in all three other classes) and no the new Negate does not make up for the lost abilities.

The new pet balance means that sorcerers will not be desired for trials, vet dungeons, or PVP; but for solo PVE questing they will be fine (if boring as paint drying due to only having a couple of active abilities).

I hope ZOS will rebalance this before it hits live, it is a mess.
  • FallenProphet
Again, I recommend to play on PTS, so you actually know what you're talking about, then you can also leave feedback which ZOS has proven they listen to.

I dont like the fact that sorcs is now forced down one path. a path with the need of 1 or more pets in the build. ( for the time being at least, as some of the best build atm have 1 or more pets).

that is not build diversity and certainly not play the way you want.
not to mention there is lots of people who hate pets. pet may be useful but due to the targeting system which target 9 health critters and dead bodies over living enemies just makes the whole thing annoying.

Yeah, I was mildly amused at this for two reasons:
    1. They featured a Sorc build that will absolutely not be as effective in 1.6
    2. They featured a Sorc build that's barely a Sorc.
      • Crit Surge issue is self explanatory in 1.6
      • Aside from the Sorc Ult's, this Sorc basically uses only one Class Skill...
EDIT: Considering Encase (technically two counting Lightning Form)
      • Everything else relies on Stamina based weapon skills.

I'm not downing the build, I'm really not.

In a way, it's a perfect indication of some of the issues we're facing.

If you want to build a class around weapon skills, fine, but no class should have to rely on them as the primary for anything, unless they choose to.

I especially loved it when they listened to the masses who hated VR content and removed VR levels ... oh wait, they didn't.

They didn't listen to the players and people quitting didn't sink in either.

Can't fix/remove everything all at once and you can't give everyone what they want, it's not a single player game
