The LOL button.

I've been scratching my head on this for a while...at the bottom of each post are a bunch of buttons including quote, insightful, agree, awesome.......and LOL.

I do not understand this LOL button...I mean I get that it means laugh out loud...but what/who/why etc... should I be offended that I have over 100 lol on me? Do people think my posts are that bad? There are no disapprove buttons maybe that's what this button is supposed to indicate....Then again maybe it's because the post is funny and it says that I'm a funny guy and generally likable. You do gain forum points as you accumulate them but maybe the award isn't because you post funny stuff...maybe it's compensaton for all the troll hate you put up with to acquire said lols...or maybe it's a thank you from Zos for posting stuff that was so bad they lol you which invariably keeps the forums more lively...it is hard work to be hated....

Honestly I don't think I've ever used the lol button because I don't know when to use the button....but lots of people use it on me so apparently I'm having a blond moment and missing the obvious....

So how do you use the lol button and wtf is it for?

I hear you. I think the LOL button was intended by ZoS to simply mean "I think that's funny

"... BUT, I'm starting to have a sneaking suspicion that people use it to express disapproval, because they have no other option.

If you use the Search function in the upper right corner you can find previous discussions of the LOL button and even a poll on its preferred use.

Short answer: Some people use it to mean hey that's funny, others use it to disagree or even to troll, some use it for both, and a few press it randomly or accidentally.

Just take it to mean whatever you want it to mean.

You are not alone wondering about this, not even the first thread on it. You've got it figured out though. SInce there is no disapprove, LOL gets used for that. I use it for both disapprove and funny. Regardless WHY you have so many LOL, you get the forum badge, so it's all good. I'll take any flag if you like my post. BTW, there's folks here with well over 1K LOL! They're either drop-dead funny, or seriously hated, LOL!

I guess it's time for the monthly 'wtf lol button' thread...

To sum it up in short, it is used by some as a genuine appreciation of humor. Others use it as a dislike vote, as in 'I'm laghing at you, not with you.'

Ass with all of the buttons; throw it around randomly and it then means absolutely nothing. Hard to be bothered when someone throws feces at you if you're already covered in feces.

The LOL button means "dislike" or "your post is stupid."

Very rarey does it mean "I actually think this is funny." However, it's very obvious when this meaning applies.

I have 234 Insightful's , 1,300 Agree's , 536 Awesome's, and 699 LOL's.

I still don't know what to make of the LOL's.

Are they people being d-bags and clicking a button instead of offering a valid rebuttal to my opinion, observation or thoughts?

Is what I said funny?

Also, whats the max amount of forum badges you can earn?

I use the LOL for things I find funny. Pretty sure that's what is was intended for.

The LOL button is used in one of two ways:

1. That was funny!
2. I disagree with you, dislike you, or think you are the opposite of genius.

The person using the LOL button rarely ever states for what purpose he has used the button. There is no way to track users of the LOL button. I would assume that ZOS knows you clicked the LOL button but they aren't sharing that information with the rest of us. The recipient is left to scratch his head and think "what was so funny about my post?" or the recipient nods and smiles thinking that others get his quirky sense of humor.

Bottom line is the usage is anonymous so you can take it to mean whatever you want because no one is going to come back and say "No Joe, I clicked the LOL button 'cause I don't like you."

No, there will be a little button over the LOL button that says "BUY". You will have to pay to use the LOL button unless you're a subscriber.

I've gotten in the habit of using the "Awesome" button if a post is genuinely funny and use the LOL button if the poster (not just the post) is a known jerk. That is, when there's no point in posting a counter to a person's comment since it's impossible to get a rational discussion, I just give him/her a LOL... like the guys who always threaten to put you on their ignore list if you disagree with them... as if being on someone's ignore list really bothers anyone. You can't have a rational discussion with them because their ego is in the way.

So, rather than argue, just LOL.
