Ultra settings will now require a video card with 2GB of VRAM

  • Ultra settings will now require a video card with 2GB of VRAM.

I have a GTX 560 Ti WINDFORCE 3X, and I've ran at ultra settings everyday since beta with zero issues. Why are you doing this to me?

If I feel the game isn't playing up to par, I'll tone the graphics down myself. Don't do it for me.

I really hope this gets nerfed before rolling to the live server, half the reason I stick around and pay $15 to beta test is merely because the graphics are beautiful.

TESO Community, how do you feel about this? Justified? and if so, why?

Cheers,
Observant.

UPDATE
This is only a recommendation, they are not going to hard-code a minimum VRAM requirement for Ultra settings. Thanks Gina for clearing that up!

Because ZOS is operating under the misguided and generally incorrect assumption that performance issues aren't on their end but are caused by players running the game on a higher-than-optimal graphics setting.

Imagine them scratching their heads and throwing their hands up in disbelief when--shockingly--performance is still regarded as poor in Cyrodiil and elsewhere.

Short answer is DKs likely won't be seeing a ton of changes before we go live; this class is still quite powerful (as it should be being a tank), even after some of the adjustments we've made to other classes and abilities.

I'm not sure - with only that quote to go on, it could mean a lot of things...

A - they're adding new graphical features that are going to require more vram than currently

B - your computer pretty much *always* needed 2gb of vram, but they under-sold the requirements, and now they're just fessing up to how much vram you actually needed

C - updates they've made make the current graphics less efficient, requiring more vram for the same effect? that seems unlikely, but I guess it's not impossible...

D - changes to video drivers are now going to require more vram for effects that ESO features?...again, doesn't seem likely, but not impossible...

in short, I'm not sure what the change to higher ram requirements means at the moment, so I'm not really able to judge whether you got screwed just now, whether you've always been screwed but you just didn't know it and now they're telling you, or someone screwed ZOS so they have to screw you, or what...

Yup, the performance issues in Cyrodiil were caused by too many people running on ultra and nothing anything server side.

I get 14FPS in sieges and high 20s-low 30s in crowded cities on my GTX 970.

Maybe they need to make Ultra require an 8GB GPU? Since it's obviously a VRAM issue...

RIGHT?! I can actually tell when an enemy zerg is stealthed near me, because my game bogs down and my latency skyrockets to 400+.

I also play the game on ultra with shadows and AA disable to give me 60-80 FPS (I don't PvP) on my 650 Super clock. I know it doesn't have 2GB of vram and I know the card owns this game. I recently had to replace the fan on my 650 and even had a old 240GS nvidia card inside the pc for a few days. My 240GS has 512MB of vram and I was playing ultra with 40FPS. I'm not exactly sure what they're trying to say here with this change but my super old card and my 650 card handles this game with ease on ultra. I can tell you this though, that GFX does mean a lot to me in these games and if I can't play ultra or force ultra through the settings file than B2P or not I'm 100% done with ESO and anything by this ZOS studio! I don't play crippled games and I don't play games where the studio is going to limit my options by force and try to hold my hands.

Here's another entry in the patch notes under the KNOWN ISSUES section: "Ultra settings will now require a video card with 2GB of VRAM. If you’re currently using auto-detect, your graphics will still be set to Ultra if you have a 1GB video card."

I've got 2GB, and I run on ultra in windowed mode with other programs running with no problem... So it definitely doesn't use more than 2GB on ultra unless something's wrong.

And what would be your CPU? I had a Phenom II X4 paired with a GTX 770 4GB card. I got the *exact* same performance you listed.

I upgraded my motherboard so I could switch to an i7 4790k, and with the same RAM, GFX card, and SSD as before, I now get 30+FPS in sieges (70+FPS in smaller battles and everywhere else in Cyrodil), 50+FPS in crowded cities, and 99+FPS everywhere else in PvE (which I must add is oh-so-nice with a 144hz monitor with no V-sync).

I get your sarcasm (I think) regarding it only being a VRAM issue, and agree.

Fx-6300. Overclocked to 4.5ghz, but that doesn't make a difference.

I'm planning on upgrading to the same CPU as you actually, since I know that's the problem. If I could go back in time I would have never bought the 6300 lol.

make sure you are not playing at 640x480...
my VRAM use is normaly at 1940mb(rawl-kha) and goes up to 2100mb in high populated sieges.

I am not understanding whats going on..did they INCREASE the GB of RAM needed or DECREASE the GB of RAM needed?

It could be somebody had the brain to optimize the graphics better if they decreased it.

I was actually hoping they would INCREASE the ultra setting and make the previous ultra=>High.

Also anybody know if they fixed those square mountains? and the ray casting?

It means you will not get your settings set to "Ultra" if you have less than 2GB VRAM.

It does not mean they tweaked any texture/resolution but the requeriments of the auto-set function to a more conservative approach.

which also means if i'm not able to force ultra settings through settings ini than i have no further need with this game or the company.

Yeah, i have a 2GB Card and 16GB Ram and the performance in cyrodiil is worse than ever. it goes down to under 10 FPS now. And i'm playing on almost the lowest settings. everything off or at minimum. view distance at 45, texture quality at medium and subsampling at high. game looks awful, but i need every single fps i can squeeze out.
