Folium Discognitum - 2 Skillpoints that you never will get [Mages Guild Spoilers]

Hey,

during the quest "Mad God's Bargain" you can decide getting the book "Folium Discognitum" or saving Valaste.

If you DON'T save her you can read the book and you will get 2 Skillpoints.
If you save her (imo the "good" decission if you think about moral and stuff like this) you will get nothing.

2 Skillpoints for decide not to save someone. There is not written that your "good" choice will cost you 2 Skillpoints.

Where is my mistake? Or it this really the reallity??

You don't get nothing, you get eidetic memory, which lets you review every single book and piece of paper you ever read in-game. It might not be something for people who want those skill point right away, but certainly helps completitionists.
Other than that, you will get enough skill points with silver/gold, pvp, and dungeons to fill the gap. My main character has all professions, I don't feel those 2 skill points, I chose to save Valaste, and I haven't regretted it for one second.

Maybe I'm losing my mind, but on my main I DID save Valaste, and on an alt I didn't - I'm pretty sure I got the eidetic memory on both characters.

But... Even you were right (but if you check it up, you will see - you are not), this 2 skillpoints makes your character more powerful and this cannot be included in a single quest choice!

Actually, you'll get both when you send her with Sheo. It's got to be tempting offer to make it a truly tough and moral decision.

However, if you did not get the skillbook, you can do the questline on an alt and then transfer the book to your main character.

P.S.:

I have many skillpoints, too. But they are not enough to do:

- all craftingpoints
- 2 different pvp setups
- 2 different pve setups

This 2 skillpoints wont give me annother setup, but when you always need some points this 2 would help a lot!

I think the power gained (or not gained) by those two points is negligible in the long run.

Nope! Zenimax fixed it. You cannot transfer the book anymore.

Yea, I've had my main and one alt both do the questline, and both of them took the book, and the alt sent the book to the main... so my main has 4 extra skill points now =P

I do think there should be a better reward for saving valaste though, maybe have her give you two extra attribute points instead of skill points.

I wont be a worse player without this 2 points. But what would you say if you get 1% damage from such a choice? It is not really necessary, but a typical MMO player want to have this to optimize his character.

You get eidetic memory regardless of what you choose. If you save Valaste you get a staff instead of 2 skill points.

The thing is, that's precisely the point of the quest. You can either do the wrong thing and benefit from it, or not a suck it up. IMHO it is masterfully done, and I applaud Zenimax for adding this kind of moral choice to a MMORPG. Most developers don't have the balls to actually handicap you for doing the right thing, even when the very definition of "the right thing" implies that there's an easier or more rewarding way.

In any case, 2 SP aren't worth that much in a game with hundreds of them.

I think you do not understand.
For a MMO player that wants to have a good character there should be a warning.

There are people that want to have a good roleplay and they don't care!

BUT there are also people that wants to have a "perfect" character for pvp. Those people need a warning so they can get the 2 points.

Thanks for the correction. I guess there were some players who were hardcore folium farmers that made ZOS change it lol.

Currently, there are not enough skillpoints to get everything, if your character is a crafter. I have over 290 skillpoints on my main character, and that isn't to play all the builds I want to play on the same character.

However, skillpoints do not affect character power. They only affect the number of builds you can have on a single character.

So if you want to play more builds, you can just roll more characters.

Well... depends on our definition "power". Having more setups is in my oppinion more powerful that have less.

An example. I spent all my points and want to change a skill for a duel in pvp. If I had this 2 points i could spend it and moprh it. This 2 points would make me more powerful all in all.

Sheogorath is quite blatant about this, if you want the book (and the skill points) then he gets Valaste, if you save her you get nothing except the warm cosy feeling that you did the right thing.

It's a clear cut choice, and in the grand scheme of things 2 skill points make little difference.

But you just make a choice and live with the consequences (either way).

It's actually written there. When Sheo is talking to you, he's telling you that this book has power of 6 of those stones that you find in tamriel.. or something like that.
Basically, he's telling you that the book = 6 skyshards (1skill point =3skyshards, so the book is equal to 2 skill points).
I'm pretty sure I recall that I was aware that the choice might cost me 2 skill points.

It can't be overstated how little 2 skill points matter in the grand scheme of things. There's hundreds and those 2 extra ones are like a drop in the bucket.

Perfect moral choice, to be honest.

There are more than enough skill points available to compensate for any impact the quest makes on min/maxing. With hundreds of skill points available, and with us only being able to slot 12 abilities, it really makes no difference in performance.

This type of quest reward or "punishment" is a common thing in ES games. Making the "moral" choice often slows character progression a bit. I find this to be fitting.

1-2% damage would not matter, too. The different between epic and legendary does not matter, too. Many things give you just a little bonus, but there are many players that want to optimize theis character. Hard to understand?

@Artemis:
At the beginning if you leave the start iseland before doing those quest there is a warning like "If you do this, you cannot do the quests after you left the island". Such a (red marked) warning would be needed!

Crafting alts are the best characters to roll in this instance.

Alternative options include:
Occasionally paying the rather insubstantial fee to respec.
Realizing that most of the skills in game are crap and not worth spending points on.

My v14 has every craft maxed, but only keeps points in the most important things (ie: having Hireling on every craft).
Has every Class skill morph maxed out to level IV, but doesn't use the crappy class skills anymore at all.
Has every Weapon line maxed out, but only uses 4 of them with full passives.
Has every Armour line maxed out, with all the passives maxed.
Has the Guild lines maxed out with all the passives bought, except Intimidate and Persuade since they are only used while leveling.
Has all Racials maxed out.
Maxed out both Vampire and Werewolf, but cured both so not sitting on skill points with those.
Has half the Alliance War skills maxed out

Currently has 12 leftover Skill Points. Choosing the book would simply mean sitting on 14 extra now.

Clearing all story quests, gaining PvP Ranks, Group Dungeons, and Skyshards has given me more than my needs already.

To me, the biggest thing with the Folium is when it is received.
At level 40-50, those skill points seemed pretty vital for me to sacrifice.
After everything else has been completed, they became redundant.

My husband warned me about the 2 skill points. I chose to save the girl anyway.

Two skill points is nothing in the grand scheme of things, and does *not* make it so that you can't have the best character.

Now you're just being stubborn. Even with 290 points, I suspect you still don't have all of them.

That quest is one of a few in the game in which the choice you make actually matters. I wish there were more of those.

There is more then enough skill points in the game to get the skill you need / use, even with all crafting maxed. You won't miss 2 skill points.

There are also people who never want to PvP. They will miss out around 50 skill points i think. One per rank.

I wonder if every new released zone will have new skyshards. If that is the case, in the end there will be a surplus of skill points.
