Brackets around an enemy in combat?

Sorry for such a basic question but I can't find the answer.

From time to time when in combat my enemy is suddenly surrounded by 4 brackets, much like a camera focus. What is the purpose of this bracket?

Thanks.

I think that's what the 'target change' button in settings is for. I believe its shift by default? To target who you are attacking?

It could also be the "Cursor Mode" which you get by pressing the "." button I think. I have no idea what Cursor Mode is for, but that could be what it is too.

Maybe Cursor Mode is that Target Change that @MissBizz is referring to

pressing tab will lock onto your current target, making it easier to aim spells and ranged attacks at that target amidst a group of enemies.

Lynx got it right! Cursor mode is so you can use your mouse to click on ui elements :)

Thanks everyone for the help. Lynx is definitely right and I can think of a number of times when bad guys were too close together and I had a lot of difficulty getting the aim point to hit the right target. I use "." all the time to go to curser mode.

    Good hunting.
