Balance is a never ending fight for game developers in EVERY SINGLE MMO, period. It doesn't mean it's the death nail in the coffin of anything. In fact the opposite would happen if they just allowed unbalanced Classes/mechanics to persist forever, it would drive players away. I agree only on the point that homogenization across Classes is bad, especially if your company's name ends in izzard, not to be confused with Eddie Izzard who is hysterically funny. And regardless of how they balance a thing, not everyone is capable of being the best at a thing while others are more capable, that's just human nature and has nothing to do with game balance.

I should clarify that this ^ is largely what I mean when I say balance in such a negative connotation. Typically the line between absurdly op and just a smart build are blurred. All classes should be capable of a few smart builds, if people can figure out combos that let them excel at one or two particular things, to me that's great. It's only a problem if that's the only one around.

The vamp combo build for instance, other than thinking they should've switched it around so the best bonuses were given at 1st stage, I had no problem with the actual outcome. To me that's not exploiting, that's just clever. But the line between exploitation and being clever doesn't seem to exist in the minds of most people. So when they start talking about balancing things, it usually means keep hitting everything with the nerf bat until everyone is equally bland at everything. No skills can shine, no combos can stand out, no one has every character is basically the same. That's why I say it's usually the death nail, because most people unfortunately don't know where to stop.

How many abilities from different classes have they nerfed so far? How many lacking have they actually improved? That's really my more pointed criticism, instead of nerfing every ability that stands out, why not create a few more for different classes? You can't just nerf every skill simply because people find it useful, that's basically what they're doing. "A lot of people are using this skill? It must be bad, let's nerf it." What sense does that make?
