I would be totally happy if there were a PvE AND a PvP achievement option for EACH color. That way you could get the ones you want the WAY you like to play. Y'know...to go along with that "promise" that we'd be able to play the way we want....
But I like the dyes system as it is now and I like that some colors are hard (or impossible, example: emperor lol) to get.

I'd like if all colors were actually distinct. Even if that means giving less options, so be it.
Seriously, what's the point in having 5 shades of red/blue/brown/white if they're basically indistinguishable?

I mean... The first two are identical. Things like this are just plain stupid.

The point is that it means there are multiple ways to get basically the same look/colours. This is a good thing because it leads to variety; it doesn't force us all to do the same one thing to get that particular colour we want. Think of it the other way; if there was only one achievement in the game that gave you white, or any shade/tone near it, that would be a far bigger problem.
Additionally, though colours can appear very similar, sometimes the way/richness they dye a particular piece of cloth/armour, as well as and their reflective properties vary. Often this isn't apparent until one wanders about in the world for a while.
And finally, the quality/level of the item you're trying to dye also seems to effect the way the dye holds to a piece at times. So on one item two colours might look very similar, but on another they'll be clearly different.
.
I dunno. I just think they needed something to make achievements worth getting, and were all, "Uuhhhh... Wait! They want armor colors, right? Let's implement that in the most annoying way possible!" instead of keeping it tied to crafting like it should reasonably be.

ALL OF THIS RIGHT HERE. ^^
I generally like it but the blandness if colors troubles me... They should be much more intense instead of mild tints or dirty results like with light and white colors.
Personally I like dark and dingy. Bright and shiny just makes toons look... Well, too much like toons.

That look does work for some characters but not all. They really have done a great job with metals for armor in this game but they really fell down when it comes to fabric. The khajiit robe with its subtle patterns and high gloss when you use the Rare dyes is absolutely beautiful. So I can't figure out why almost ALL other fabrics look flat and dingy. And why is there so much "fabric" on ROBES that looks like LEATHER? Keep the leather for the light armor please!

Look, if they're gonna be dumb about it and tie dyes to achievements, there's no point in giving me a different swatch for something I already have. I'm all for making colors obtainable in multiple ways, but it's still annoying to unlock a color and go, "Oh, well, I'm already wearing that. Guess I shouldn't have wasted time killing all those zombies."Additionally, though colours can appear very similar, sometimes the way/richness they dye a particular piece of cloth/armour, as well as and their reflective properties vary. Thanks for bringing THAT up, because I hate it as well! There needs to be a way to preview what the dye will look like, before the time is invested in unlocking it. (Sorry, horsey, I know you're dead but I still have some strength left in my swingin' arm). For example: Dominion Fisher Yellow (or any fishing color, really). Fishing is a pain in the butt, so it'd be nice to know if it makes my armor look "vibrant and golden" or "like someone pissed on my workbench" before I go out and try to obtain it.

Then again, most people don't really seem to care, so EH. *shrug* It is what it is. I'll keep grinding anyway, because playing dress-up is part of the fun. At least when I'm rewarded for doing something I hate, it adds to the sense of accomplishment.
Wish that there was an option to be able to unlock the Trials dyes via PvP.

Yeah it WOULD be nice to have that. MOST of the reds are faded, washed out and just kind of ugly. But I'm FAR more annoyed about the Legate's Black than I am about the Ruby Throne Red.

The achievement system is first and foremost a type of crude 'checklist'. No wonder you don't seem to like so many things attached to it. Dyes, in relation to this are just a bonus.
If you're doing achievements just to get the dye, then I honestly feel sorry for you and the way you play the game. It sounds awful, boring and 'grindish' to do something just for the reward. With respect perhaps I could suggest you look up 'Extrinsic values' and 'Intrinsic values', as well as the 'Hedonic Treadmill'.
My advice, re fishing is; If you don't like it, then don't do it. The dye is not that important is it? Really, it's not at all important. That goes for anything in-game; if you hate doing something then why on earth would you do it. Just for the reward? Your last sentence you wrote: that is simply insane. It's a game, we're meant to have fun playing it, that is the whole and only point of it. As @Zorrashi says; Just play and you'll come upon a decent array of colors.
Finally, I agree with you; the dye system tied to achievements is not something I would have done either. Like you say, it is what it is. But the dyes themselves? I think they've done a very good job of that. Hopefully you'll find with time that there's more to the dye system than just the colours, they can also provide you with a means to control how old or new your armour look. And with time they will add more, it's an MMO after all, it is not a static entity.

Emphasis mine. And to that I say, "You've just disagreed with everything I complained about, then agreed with my complaining. Why take the time to criticize why the feature annoys me, if you already get it? Also, here comes a huge amount of text. You may wanna skim."
I enjoy the game. I love the game. I love that we get to use a dye system. I dislike that we can't preview the colors before we use/obtain them. I hate the way they force us to unlock the colors! Other things have an alternate way they can be obtained:
-- Don't wanna craft woodworking? Go to a kiosk or ask someone else to make it. Same with weapons. Same with armor. Same with foods. Same with potions. Same with enchantments.
-- You do wanna craft, but don't want to look for materials? Buy them. Invest a skill point and get a hireling. Need a motif? Get some gold, meet me at a trading stall. Someone has you covered.
-- Can't get past a certain point in the game? You can probably wait for someone else to show up; grab someone(s) and do it as a pair/group.
But we get down to the dye system, and it gets silly:
--Want to paint your clothes a color of purple that doesn't look red/pink, or it annoys you when the random pieces you find don't match your sabatons? And you really love those sabatons, don't you? Well too bad, Skippy! Go grind through some achievements, because we put that feature over there, where it clearly doesn't belong! I know you like that specific shade of green, but it's RARE, you see! Now you have to do something that's completely unrelated, instead of just cutting up plants and rubbing leaves on your cloth-based clothes. This is a fantasy world, you see, and grass stains don't exist. ¬_¬ Ugh. Immersion-breaking AND irksome.
However! That's not my biggest complaint, here!!! My biggest complaint (as Choice Yellow dictates) is still that, even though you unlock several colors through various achievements of various difficulty, half of them aren't different enough to be worth the effort required to get them. If a dye is so "rare/zomg speshul" then make it look awesome. At the same time, if an achievement is so difficult that it makes me want to reach into my ears and thereby pull my eyes out, "bucket of random paint (kinda like that other bucket but maybe a tiny fraction less shiny)" should not be my implied reward.
If they want to tie a reward to something that should, itself, be its own reward, then at least make that stupid thing be worth my while; I obviously didn't care about it, or intend to do it before they made it a mandatory part of something I otherwise enjoy.
