Animation Canceling - An In-Depth Guild for all levels of players

Hey guys I have just finished a video on animation canceling, if you do or don't know what this is I suggest you go check it out ;)!

This guide will go over: Light Attack Canceling, Dodge Roll Canceling, Bash Canceling, Weapon Swap Canceling, and explain how you can do multiple cancels at the same time! A commentary is also included at the end going over some cancel combo's used in gritty PvP combat!

    Haven't watched this yet. But dodge roll canceling? Color me intrigued though I hate animation cancelling lol

    Nice video Jack, there is another way to cancel the weapon swap as well which is to weapon swap > dodge roll. It ends up looking like you roll and swap at the same time and come out of the roll with your other weapon, it's an increadibly smooth animation when done right.

    Yes, thank you this was very useful, know about the light atack one but not the others. Especially the weapon swap to bring the healing staff up, drop one or two heals then back to attacking.
    Grinding just make you go in circles.
    Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

    Seems like it's as much of an exploit as strafe jumping is in Quake.

    It also feels a bit silly to me, but thanks for the video.

    Is this really how they intended the game to be played? It seems like it's an exploit and they just don't know how to fix it so they don't do anything about it.

    Nice tutorial. Didnt know that bash could be used to cancel animation.
    But if I remember correctly you can use Block to cancel animation as well as everything else shown in the video. Your video didnt say anything about that.

    This is what the game has been boiled down to? Animation cancel in order to reach high DPS, players are hitting X amount of DPS on average so content is designed with that amount in mind. The game itself then has content requiring you to cancel aspects of the game in order to get past dps checks placed in the game...

    Might as well remove the animations, since they're being cancelled any way. Not only is clipping endorsed but then promoted and expected. Expected by the game itself.

    In fact that's a question, has anyone done any end game content recently with out any clipping at all? Block casting is animation clipping (not just for mages but for tanks too keep in mind), crushing shock and rapid strike builds rely on animation cancelling.

    Is that part of the balance issue? That certain weapons can freely clip while others have forced animations? Does that mean in the future I'll be able to spam weave wrecking blow and heavy attacks like we can rapid strikes?

    I'm just curious which way the goal lies, to balance and allow cancelling for all or to remove it from all?

    At least, the DPS benefit from it will. You'll still be able to cancel, but expect to perform the second action only.

    If there was consistency in the connection from moment to moment, it would be different. Makes more sense to simply up the damage output of the weapon and eliminate the need for the cancel. To be fair, there should be no 'instant casts' either - as everything with any physical motion will take some amount of time, unless they introduce ambidexterity.

    Give everything a cooldown, up the damage to compensate, then your skill is what your skill is. Nothing more, nothing less.



    Just because you don't like the way something is doesn't necessarily make it wrong...

    Animation cancel does require skill to do effectively. It introduces a level of skill to doing DPS beyond knowing the correct rotation. I think exploit is the wrong word because exploits are meant to make things easier, animation cancelling makes doing high dps harder.

    Personally I think it adds to the game rather than detracts.

    That would be kinda problematic.

    For example, take my DK who fights by using light attack immediately followed by ransack. The light attack animation is cancelled and replaced by ransack animation - but the light attack damage is applied instantly, right as i push the button(at the beginning of the first animation).

    For what you mention above (you only get damage from second action), light attack damage would have to be shifted to happen at the end of the light attack animation, rather than the beginning. And that would make combat feel clunky(basically light attacks would feel the same as heavy attacks do now). There would be an uproar about combat not being responsive - "i pressed button and nothing happened!"

    For this reason, i do not expect animation cancelling to be removed.

    Really great job man. Animation canceling is actually one of the few things that ZOS got right.It does indeed make the combat be way less clunky . Unfortunately from what I have seen we can expect them to bow down to the flood of whines at some point.

    Players who has been here since beta know about an long list of whines for totally irrelevant stuff.
    Remember everybody complained about the chests, chests in dungeons created so much whines they changed it.
    Remember the magic furnace set who was so OP, theory crafting on its worst.

    this reminds me of faking casts in wow. Plenty of people would accuse you of cheating but it didnt mean you were.

    I dont understand how people not weaving are so mad, you can see how easy it is to do, and doesnt "break" any class or build, just rewards higher dps for those who take the time to master it.
