They don't have much use in dungeons because semi-weak, buggy AI-controlled pets will (almost) always lose to players, but that doesn't make them entirely worthless. Pets are great for soloing content. Magdalina you will be dissapointed...but when Spellcrafting comes all will can use pets.
k9mouse you have Crit surge heal.It's enough for soloing.
Messy1 Black hole-AOE pull with not big radius and limited counts (for example max 3 targets.For one morph it can add snare which decreased over time after pulling.
SnarkyQBthere will be 100s of "ZOS buff sorc" when they scale destro/resto with magicka+spell power.(ofc if nothing in skills don't change)

I hate being limited to just 5 slots + Ultimate. The swapping is useless, because during a stress situation it never works for certain...

Mages guild skill line would have been my preference but I'm not sure how easy it would be to implement it into that skill line.Like it or not, makes no diff, but TES / ESO is built on lore. Mages are the only ones who can summon critters from Oblivion. From a lore POV, make summoning a world skill line will not be good logic.
