you intimidate merchants into giving you what they've got? :sob: I wouldn't do it if there weren't an achievement attached to it! I'm so sorry, Ohtarona!

Not really, no, considering the next time they see you they address it, but then act like it's the first time when you intimidate them again.

This. Most of my characters are 'good guys' so they wouldn't. Even the shady one is above shaking down a defenseless merchant for a hundred gold.

Wow, I had no idea you can do this?! What do they give you? Is it like highway robbery? Do you take everything they have in their store? (I call this the realistic situation if you were an actual thief)

Or, like, did ZOS think that might be taking it a little too far and so you pretty much just take 100g? (The not-so-realistic-but-it's-a-game situation).

the merchant, once intimidated, agrees and asks that you please not harm them. then, they place their knapsack down and let you take what you want (usually some gold and, in my most recent time, some heavy armor shoes). what breaks my heart is how she then goes and curls up next to her horse like she's got nothing left in this world. :joy: ... :sob:

    This.

But honestly, these little interactions would be meaningless without it.

Agreed, I get into my characters head when I play, and they are good guys, Unless the achievement has an amazing Dye attached (and I do mean amazing) I just won't do it.

Heck, I don't even hunt Deer, if it doesn't attack me I don't attack it.

I remember robbing a kahjiit merchant, saying something along the lines of " I'll cut off your tail and wear it as a belt." I felt bad aferwards.. even worse since I was playing on my khajiit when I said that.... haha.

I felt guilty the first time I did it, about a week after launch of the game. At that time I wasn't aware that there was an achievement related to doing such a thing to these traveling merchants.

THEN, once I found out there IS an achievement for doing this, I was all like:

No point in doing it for the achievement, as the character who committed such a crime would experience immediate deletion. I wouldn't be able to stand to look at them on the character creation screen.

I think this is just a small thing implemented to add to the feel of the TES world since the actual Justice system and Theives Guild was a long ways off from release. They might add bounty in the future.

What's funny is that you need a Figther's Guild passive to do this, when the Fighters Guild might kill someone for doing this.

Haha, yes i have only dne it a couple of times and i felt very guilty afterwards. It's the responses of the NPCs that does it.

I do it. But, frankly, most of the things my characters do in ESO, I hand-wave as being out of character for them. I'm not gonna pass up on a quest for RP reasons, though.

    Yup!

And for those who don't know, these are specially spawned merchants not just any that you run across on the road. They are there for no other reason than the achievement, and spawn in the same spots as NPCs for Lightbringer and Give to the Poor.

I feel the same way. That's one of the few things I never liked about the Elder Scrolls. They force you to make specific moral decisions if you want to progress in the game (at least in terms of achievements ocd).

I would expect a game with this budget to allow players moral flexibility regarding game progress.

In an open world game achievements are the equivalent of the linear progress in a traditional game. I don't want to be forced to make morally questionable decisions.

In the real world there is not principle that suggests that you need to rob and kill someone to be a complete person.

guilt is something you feel when you do something unexpected of you and it affects others. This is expected, and they are not real people it is a soundfile, a mesh/rig(maybe vertex morphing phonemes), if else code and some strings(as in coding)...all timed and put together to give you the illusion of a person...they do not exist, and the devs expect you to intimidate them....so get off you pedestal and go rob someone....they know they want it :)
