Treasure Maps - Worth It? Worthless?

Is there any reason to go after treasure maps? I see maps for sale ranging from 100 to 5,000G. I've over a hundred of the maps but never found anything worthwhile. No purple set items (just random generics), no gold items. Usually 2 or 3 random items, gold and a soul gem.

Am I at the mercy of the RNG or is there no special items attainable from the chests? The loot is rather disappointing when you take into account the rarity and the time it takes to hunt them down.

Is there any rare items of note, or are they just kind of... meh?

The loot at the treasure map locations is IMO worthless. You get a small amount of XP for finding it which is the only good thing. They usually only contain white level garbage, a couple of gold pieces and if you are lucky you might end up with an empty soul gem.

I just love doing them, the soul gems are nice, and the pieces of set can sometimes be useful...upper crag for instance the treasure maps got me my entire VR 10 jewelry set. In cyrodill, it has slowly built me a covenant set of armour and jewelry. True lots of times it not an uber thing and no blues or purples. But I love the maps. If you are just trashing them or selling them to vendor and you are on the NA sever... I will take/ buy them @tashira_ronin

I don't think the reward substantiates actually finding the place drawn on the treasure map. Seems like the general consensus in this thread.

There are a lot of easy ways the devs can improve this aspect of the game, however. Maps in random loot are hard to find. Possibly increase the loot of those maps to include blue, purple, or gold items ... and require the player to have opened the map and be in the player's inventory at the time the chest lock is picked.

But, yeah, the maps as is today are near worthless except to those "collectors" (like the poster above here) who enjoy having them.

Some people enjoy them. Personally for me it's usually a waste of time. You can get the same rewards doing many other things that also offer XP along the way.

There should be better items inside the chests imo. At least the chance of a purple or gold item. Or a pet or a mount or something besides the same crappy blue item with maybe a soul gem.

I'm not saying they are worthless. Many people find them fun. I'm just saying the reward is seldom worth the time involved. I've been playing since beta well before launch and the rewards have never changed. Best case scenario it's a soul gem and a random blue item.

Just another thing in the game that has so much potential to be great... but instead its meh.

They're pretty cool to do although loot is weak. They severely need a dye for the 1000 chest gender achievement (I forgot the official name).

If the intention of the OP is to make the maps more attractive to other players who are of the less collector type, then yes I agree, at the present they are not worth most doing them. I would be happy if they made them drop uber items but for them to be bound on pick up, and rarer. Then other people might find joy in wandering the map trying to find the land marks.

    but!

I reckon it would just result in another addon showing where those map points were and the non collector yep zooming there for their loot and not enjoying them for the pirates treasure map style of hunting that they bring now.

I will admit I have a foot in both camps on this, and if it was changed I would shrug. And still loot every container in sight with the hopes of getting one, and all the other goodies I already get.

The collective hive mind of players will result in add-ons, screenshots, maps, coordinates or any other number of mechanisms to make the maps stand out. And it's hard to constantly reference the map in-game to try to match it up to the world.

That said, if anything, maybe offer maps with increased rarity. Every so often a purple or gold map will show up, and offer the chance for better loot or items. I love chest hunting and even finding maps. I feel like I'll find 50+ chests in the world for every one map I find.

I love the maps, but I've been waffling on the concept of buying them in store. I've been trying to look for info (e.g. do they ever drop anything unique?) but it's hard to find info on that.

And yes, I completely agree with bind on pickup to actually reward people who like treasure hunting and not end up in a store for 50K for some rare set piece or whatnot.

Worthless loot. Chasing them is sadly a waste of time. Sucks since the concept rocks.

I enjoy doing them and looking for the location. I even enjoy going back to treasure locations when I get copies later of the same maps. To me they're definitely worth looking for. That being said, they are not worth the ridiculous amount of gold the guild stores charge. While some of us may find the treasure hunt enjoyable, you're probably not going to recoup that 500g with what you find in those chests.

I tend to snag them when I see them for about 250 or less (deconning the purples can worth it). But as I said, I keep seeing them going for upwards of 5K, so I was wondering if there was something worth it or it's just people hoping for an easy score.

Did you ever find an item of the shroud of the lich set in the chests?
I only found items of the shadow and of the lord in the many chests i have done, but i read here on the forums the shroud of the lich set can also drop. But that was maybe false info.

Why does everything in the game have to reward you with uber loot to make it worthwhile? The journey is the reward.

With Treasure Maps, the challenge is finding the location and reward is finding the chest after figuring out where that drawing is.

Treasure maps are an excuse explore. If you don't like exploring, toss or sell the map.

Completely agree. Uber loot for something like this would be silly and out of proportion to the difficulty, or it would make the devs make them so rare they would lose their current broad appeal to those who like the treasure hunt aspect. For those who love the hunt, finding them is reward enough.

The only thing I'd change--they really need achievements tied to them, which as far as I know they don't.

It doesn't. Just commisserate with the effort needed. As for Treasure chests, crafting tempers would be nice. But I won't complain much, they honestly can't serve a good purpose other than XP.

Our guild actually organized a treasure hunt in the EP zones a few weeks ago. We had screenshots of all the maps posted on our forum and if any player in the group had a map, we worked collectively to find them.

It was a lot of fun! It didn't matter that sometimes only one person in the group would get a treasure. There was one map from Shadowfen that we couldn't find that day, but I was able to find it the day after.

They have a higher chance of giving you a soul gem than regular chests do, so I'm good with that. They also give you set items. Even if they are green, they can always be improved.

I like the idea. Lets give ESO some credit, its nice to see some crafting quests.

I do hope thou they add some rare items to give as rewards exp. receipt, vanity, or even costumes.

I think that'd be nifty to be able to find purple or gold maps which had those as a chance. Pet trading and collection would add a lot of value to 'em. Costumes, too.
