If this is only happening after each patch, and you're getting the "repair" prompt after updating and getting the error message, just ignore the prompt, close the launcher and re-open it. That should give you the "play" prompt and you can then log in normally, although in my case the first log in after updating is always a bit slower with a brief break in the music during the log in. After a day or two the "play" prompt will appear every time, until then just close and re-open the launcher and it should work fine.

That's assuming it's the same error and in the same circumstances that a lot of EU players are getting each patch day.

I have only had this error appear once and that was when I had just quit the game and walked away from my PC leaving the launcher open. This was on a patch day but after I had already played for some time.

When I returned the above error was imposed over the launcher, I closed the launcher and re-opened it the game loaded fine, no problems since.

Funnily enough I also get the slow loading and singular break in the music right after a patch.

I have never had to run a repair or a game consultant thingy and for this I am eternally grateful, I hope everyone gets their issues sorted. :)

    NEVER EVER.........

Post a 'well it's never caused me a problem' type post.......

I read a few more threads and went back to playing......

I opened the launcher and the Error 209 message popped up BUT the launcher behind still showed a blue 'play' button........

So I followed my own advice and shut both the error and the launcher.....

On re-opening the launcher EXACTLY the same thing happened........

I started to get VERY worried!!

Luckily closing the error and hitting play loaded the game, I've just tabbed out to post this.

Is someone at ZOS playing a joke OR did I just totally jinx myself?

Hello, This link solves the ESO.exe as run administrator for me (tried other tips in that link and failed) and I was able to get in the game. However, it doesn't solve the run from Steam Client.. I am still unable to click play on Steam and it doesn't do anything because Steam ID doesn't recognize ESO in run administrator mode at all so only way to play ESO is to bypass steam client. I really want to play ESO via Steam so Steam can record everything and show other friends that I play ESO.. Any fix to that? Thanks.

I have been getting this error ever since the last patch.
I'm also prompted to repair (which I have done).

I found that if I just kill the launcher and relaunch enough times, the error goes away (as does the repair button) and I'm able to play.

My wife complains that I never listen to her. (Or something like that.)

Welcome to the 209 error club. Lots of us just started getting this error after Mondays patch. Hopefully they will fix it soon.

The order in the documentation provided is wrong. This is how I solved my problem:

    1. Started Launcher
    2. Removed the .version files
    3. Repaired, just a few MB actually downloaded

Starting the launcher after removing the .version files causes the Repair button to go away and forces a download of the entire game.

Will it will solve launch from Steam client? Hope so because your list doesn't involve run as administrator..

So I received the error and ignored the error.

Instead, make a shortcut on the desktop to launch the game from the eso.exe file found at \Program Files (x86)\Zenimax Online\The Elder Scrolls Online\game\client

Use this to launch the game.

    use the launcher for updates

I was receiving the same error but can launch the game via the shortcut and get in

Yeah I can run from the eso.exe as well but the launcher has to work when they roll out patches so they need to fix this. I get the 209 error every 2 out of 3 times I open the launcher. I close it and open it again until I get one that lets me play. This is going to be quite annoying if come Monday they roll out a patch and we can't update because of this.

Best thing to do for Monday is to open the Launcher until you get "Play" and leave it that way. It will automatically start downloading the new patch when it's available and update accordingly. Hopefully they can have a fix in there for it as well and we never see that ridiculous error again!

If the game version is the same then it should. I don't run as administrator, using windows 8.1.

Looks like that this today's patch doesn't fix this Versionfail error. Guess that I have to continue "run as adminstrator" to bypass steam client once again. Miss using steam client heh.

Not sure if this will help anyone. I received an email from support after mine started working and this is what they said to do:
There is another way we can try to solve the issue. Please follow the steps:

    Open the Launcher as Administrator
Do another repair please ( that will create a new host fresh host file we need for the upcomming steps)
Locate the file "D:"\games\ zenimaxonline\launcher (My game is installed on D)
Find in here all host developer files and delete the ones with a number as hostdeveloper 1, hostdeveloper 2 and so on
There should only be the one left without a number (that's the one you just created with the repair)
    Close the file
Open the Launcher again as Administrator

    It should work fine now.

A day after I posted the IPs of a working launcher and failed launcher mine started working with no errors. I didn't do anything or try the steps I posted above.

The patching may be influenced by your virus protection! I had this error until I stared to patch with the viruspgm temporailly of. It may be enough to temporarily shut of the firewall.

Wasn't my problem. Nothing was blocking the routes. You do need to verify your antivirus software is allowing the traffic for sure and if it is, make an exception for eso.exe.

I am unsure what exactly was causing this issue for me. All of a sudden my game stopped giving this error last week. I NEVER repaired/reinstalled anything. From one day to the next it seemed to have just disappeared. I didn't do anything with Addons so it wasn't related to them either. I think it stopped after last weeks patch. I didn't have any issue with the one from yesterday and I still haven't seen this error message. I hope it clears up for you guys.

Mine started working on its own a couple of days ago. I didn't do anything after posting the routes. I had given up on them fixing it. I guess they fixed it on their side quietly. So far it's been working fine for a few days.
