How do you guys come up with half the name in elder scrolls? Like the Dwemer ruins alone are tonge twisters but names, cities, areas, races, even making up new language such as daedric and dragon. How you guys do it? Any one have wild crazy hunches feel free to post.

Probably the wonderful thing called imagination. With a sprinkle of inspiration from real world naming conventions and/or other works of fiction, of course.

The huge amount of lore for TES wasn't exactly thrown together over a weekend. They have been adding to it over the course of 20 years.

Names in any kind of fantasy lore are often variations of real names, in order to make them recognizable as names but still exotic and unfamiliar.

Sometimes the designers take shortcuts, like when they used twisted versions of old Sumerian names for Daedric ruins and Ashlander names in Morrowind, but sometimes they do things the hard way and invent at least some parts of a made-up language.

We have many talented writers that work with us when we make content in order to ensure that the fidelity of each racial language is maintained. This includes everything from creating names for non-player characters, to ensuring Daedric runes on summoning symbols match up properly with the Daedric Prince that is being entreated for aid.

Some of the more complex names and words are nigh unpronounceable, so we avoid using those when actors will be required to speak them, but we have a pronunciation guide that is handled largely by Lawrence and Wynne when those complicated names and words are unavoidable in the script.

I am almost certain they have scripted name generators for most of the races, and have been refining them over time. I wrote one myself for the Dunmer and it works great. Some races would be more difficult than others though.

Thanks a lot for that. I am an admirer of linguistics while only capable of speaking two languages fluently but your comment made me actually think about staying subbed. All the snafu this game is facing I most likely have forgotten why I actually love this game and how much work you guys put into it
to make it a great game. Thanks, MJ Parker!
