I don't prefer to play solo exactly, but it's just sort of turned out that way. I haven't got heavily into guilds and all my irl friends don't play any more, so the limit of my social involvement is to just grab some random people to do group stuff but then go back to wandering around on my own. I'm probably the ideal eso player really, because it's never occurred to me to be unhappy about phasing in the solo (soloable) quests, etc.

Hate to tell you this, but just because it's an MMO doesn't mean that it's a Massively Grouping Online game. Many people play these games solo because they can, and do grouped content when they want to. It allows people to go at their own pace, and not worry about if their friends are gaining levels too much faster/slower than them.

Take me, for example. I fall into many categories in this poll, but tend towards the solo. Why? Because I do like to explore and just kind of say, "I want to go in that direction and see what's there." If I play with others, it becomes about what the group wants to do.

Now, on the other hand, I like doing the group dungeons as well. They're fun, and it's nice to have a group of people together to take down a tougher enemy. That's the great part about an MMO. Whether you want to be 100% group, 100% solo, or some combination of the two, you can choose to do that. MMO allows for a variety of play.

I sometimes think people misunderstand the whole concept of gaming. It is a personal hobby that we all generally enjoy when sitting alone at our computer. For most of us, if we want to do something socially with others then we switch the computer off and either go out or have our friends/family round.

There are certainly those who play computer games socially, but it started out that way primarily because the early online games like EQ more or less required grouping. That is no longer the case, as developers realised that for most people online gaming is simply an extension of their offline gaming, neither more nor less than that.

Why those people believe that playing socially requires grouping for combat is something I've never understood, certainly since the early EQ days when one of the attractions of playing socially was the way it filled the long downtime between each fight. With today's games there is no such downtime and I find group encounters very frantic, if not manic. No time permitted to read anything, or watch a cutscene, must dash on to the next fight...

I personally prefer online games because these days I find that offline games feel very empty, and the advantage offline games used to have in relation to a strong storyline coupled with a rich lore is no longer valid.

I'm only too happy to play in a game world where I'm surrounded by other players, to join in with them for tough fights and dungeons etc, and to interact with them both in-game through chat, trading, quest help and so on, as well as out-of-game by e.g. forum discussions.

What I have no interest in is committing myself to group sessions in which I have to play at someone else's pace, committing myself to guilds with endless chat, events and other obligations, or having any form of voice chat that requires me to converse with real-life people rather than their in-game characters.

I doubt that I'm very different in these respects to a great many players, although each of my points is probably reinforced by the fact that I'm in my middle 60s and so really don't want to know about the sort of things that a lot of the younger players tend to be more obsessed with judging by the general chat channels of some of the online games!

For all these reasons and more, I'm very much a solo PvE player who enjoys dabbling in role-playing without getting too obsessed with the stricter aspects of role-play such as walking everywhere instead of running etc., and with an enjoyment of grouping up occasionally as well as a lot of co-operative play at other times that involves playing socially but not through formal grouping.

PvE with some PvP spice. No special attachment for any alliance but PvP'ing at a single one. One toon for each storyline.

I like to wander; while I wander, there are times for soloing, times for formal grouping, times for informal grouping, times for PuGging and times for guilding.

ETA- PvE, the way I see it, includes some RP'ing, but not necessarily involves writing "Toonicus Roleplayicus looks around and cries 'Oh, Sheogorath, why has thou left me in such a dire situation! Your most faithfull servant now lies in poverty and despair, with no cabbage, cheese or fishsticks!´" using purple letters at the zone chat window...

I could meld 4th and 5th in one because after all it is just relax after work and however I'm grouping with others pretty often for dungeons/anchors/bosses I definitely prefer to play on my own pace, enjoying views, reading books and having conversations with every NPC I'm passing by which would be impossible having to play with 'go go go' impatient people which are such a majority in modern MMO's.
And no, MMO doesn't mean having to do everything in groups, not by any means for your information.

True. I'am agree (mostly). But this is not only about leveling. You can hit VR in a week (I'm not talking about power leveling; it's more casual leveling). Most MMO build around end-game. ESO is the great game because devs care not only about end-game, but also about low and mid lvls.
And I know, sometimes you are in a bad mood and want to play alone and the game dont force to join someone. It's ok.

Not always. I prefer to read all dialogs. Why? Because this is interesting. It's exploration of this world. What people do, who they are and so on. Sometimes you can find really interesting stories. But mostly peolple rush trough and just click-click-click-click-"ok, time to kill all!". But a few times I met a group which interested in dialogs as I am. And we dont rush, and sometimes I even have to wait a little others (and it's ok). All I want to say, it's that if you want to explore with a group, you can find others, who enjoy exploration. At least, you should try.

BTW I prefer to play solo, and everything else is just the perks. - I see it like: "I dont want to group. I dont enjoy grouping. I hate people. But if the game will be too hard, I'll join someone."

It is a simple fact that many people simply are not as into grouping as others. MMO may stand for massively multiplayer online, but that does not equate to grouping, it equates into how you can (and likely will) interact with other players because they exist in the game world.
MMO does not mean we should be forced to group. Rather, grouping is a choice. Which is as it should be imo.

Kinda those morphed. I am the at home wife, during the day I play around cooking/cleaning/kids to avoid the likes of SpongeBob....so solo works best as I can walk away whenever needed. I enjoy teaming up with my husband to play together, he hooked me on TES and RPG to begin with. I also enjoy small groups for WB runs/dungeons, just can't do it often.

However, my first online MMO that I genuinely enjoyed was LOTRO, I loved the 12-24 man raids. As a support player. I don't want to be the person expected to keep everyone alive or the tank that has to keep aggro. I'm fine with having to do a specific thing at a specific time, but don't put me in a position of making sure we don't wipe. So....I don't much like the ESO set up in so far as 4 man, requiring specific builds/skills.

PVP, LOL! No offense to the players that enjoy that aspect, but Cyrodiil could burn to the ground for all I care. I have no loyalty to any one faction over another and nothing to prove.

The only thing that I really, really despise about ESO is the gap between V10 and now V14 that they force you to grind, pvp, or group for. This is the first game that I have experienced a complete stop gap in how you top your character level and acquire skills, or in this case skill points.

    Anyway OP, thats me :D

I think that most players don't want anyone impeding their progress towards getting powerful quickly. So many feel they can always rely on themselves, and IF they do come across an enemy that is more than they can handle, then they'll ask for assistance, but on for that instance. Then its back to the solo grind; at least until they think they've gotten themselves where they want to be with the character.

Much of the feeling that comes with playing an MMO is the feeling of clout and getting recognized for being *** at the game, and there are plenty people around to see it in an Massive Multiplayer.

I prefer to play solo... sort of? I do have A solo character, she doesn't play with anyone, doesn't group or anything like that but will run with people through dungeons and such.

Mostly, i play with my husband and kids. We aren't into guilds or PVP we don't group with others, we just like to hang out and have fun together. Doesn't mean we wont help people when we see they need help or have fun in chat occasionally. We aren't completely alienating ourselves but do prefer our tight knit family group. We just have more fun that way.

Yes, because old games are so much fun to play over and over and......without any new content, updates, etc.

I wonder what the subscription rate would be if say the game had 0 solo content, no questing, and was all PVP or group based and you unlocked everything through those set ups? Would it even get enough $$ to operate as sub based?

And @DamitJanit I agree, I'm waiting to see how the net neutrality thing turns out. We may very well be giving up cable all together if neutrality remains.

You can only play Skyrim for so long, and the others are all very dated. Many solo players, myself included, will of course have played them and most other offline games anyway, There are very few such games about nowadays, certainly not enough to sustain a main hobby.

But, of course, that's not really your point. What you're arguing is that a monthly subscription is good value for money if you group but not if you solo, and that is simply nonsense. If a game gives you enjoyment no matter how you choose to play it then it's worth paying for, irrespective of what other games there may or may not be out there.

I don't group much or PvP at all, but I respect the preferences of those who do, and I'm glad they're playing the games I enjoy because the more that do so the likelier the games are to remain viable and running. What I don't understand is why so many groupers (perhaps not you) want soloers to quit MMOs and play offline games instead, rather than welcoming their contributions to the long-term success of a game.

Fair enough. I suppose my own perspective taints my glasses a bit: The only reason we bought ESO with two subs was to play cooperatively, something utterly impossible in previous TES releases.

Other. I've come across a lot of players in different games who like to duo with a SO. My husband and I like to duo, take on more than we can handle, relax and just have fun. The gaming crowd is growing up, married, kids, jobs; being able to play together when we have time instead of getting left out since we can't play 15 hours a day is a nice change a number of games have made. Glad they decided to make ESO solo/duo/group friendly rather than catering only to the basement dwellers.
