So it appeared to me that the focus rating seemed accurate as far as what these traits/spell penetration are doing. I ran the crystal frag numbers you gave with the spell resist numbers you had, and spell pen, coming up with the damage numbers you posted without the sharpened traits on.

Not sure it's accurate. Your own results show that the game uses the % value from the Sharpened trait as a multiplier to the sum of all other penetration contributions, except the 300 Cyrodiil bonus.

For example, if you add 3% to the focus rating of 952, the new focus rating should be 952*(1+3/100)=981, not 952*3=2856. That is, if we assume the trait's effect is multiplicative with Concentration. If additive, the 3% would be calculated off the target's SR, 2029*3/100=61, and then added to 952, 952+61=1013, which is still much lower than 2856.

The trait's percentage value used a simple multiplier would explain why the trait is broken. You could easily get a focus rating of 3150 to negate a hard-capped SR with the 14% Sharpened trait on a yellow 2-hander plus one or two light armour pieces with maxed Concentration.

Yes with SR it is just straight multiplying by whatever the spell pen number is, not going by the percentage or however they meant for it to work. I was just pointing out the focus rating jumping up so high correlates with attorney's numbers he got when he added a sharpened traited item, thus showing it is broken like he said. Once you get over the person's SR, the attack hit's for as hard as it is going to. So with a focus rating above 3k, your bypassing away anyones SR.

So what I meant by saying the focus rating is accurate, is it is showing that sharpened is broken when applying that spell pen value. Not that it is all working as intended. Not sure if that makes any more sense or not.

    2. For the armor penetration, both on live and PTS, we have 100 base pen in PVE, 400 base pen in PVP. When adding a 12% sharpened traited bow to live, the armor pen number went from 100 - 1200. PVP it went from 400 to 1500. On test with a 14% sharpened bow it went from 100-1400 and 400 - 1800 for PVE/PVP.

Don't have sharpened 1h's on pts, but on live it took the armor pen number from 100 to 600 and 400 - 900 with two 6% pen daggers. So it looks like its only getting 5% based on how it is applying the 12% /14% pen from bow.

So it seems like the sharpened trait is multiplying the 12%/14% by just 100 base then adding the 300 extra we get from pvp on top of it. Not sure if that is working as intended, or how it affects damage, until either I can test it later with a friend or someone tests it for me.
Please be aware that Harven's Extended Stats is currently inaccurate for armor penetration when using sharpened weapons and the armor penetration stat does not appear to reflect the actual penetration given by the aforementioned sharpened trait.

Again that's why I said I would try to test it all out later, unless someone beats me to it. It could very well be accurately showing what is happening when we apply a sharpened trait weapon, but not working as intended. Harven stated he is just displaying the hidden stats, so if anything is inaccurate, it would be game side.

Hehe, that's why I put some plain-English takeaways with each part so far :).

Just an update, I will be doing some more testing sometime today and updating the OP. I'll post a reply to the thread once I have...

    Excellent work @Attorneyatlawl‌
    This is an Awesome Thread.
Clear, concise, well thought out, and Very informative.

This information, in the hands of ZeniMax staff, should solve a rather large number of issues very soon.

    Hey bud!

Have you tested what PURE armor protects against?

If its different from mobs or players?

I ask cause I have changed nothing. But I take LESS damage in average the past week from mobs, dungeons and Cyro, then I did before.

I have the same gear. Switch around skill, yes, but an overall, I do notice....I take less damage!

DK, 5 heavy. 2 medium. All passives. Willow and vampire kiss set.

No numbers to give you....other then I take LESS damage and the only thing that gone up is my PURE armor. Vet 6 btw.

Zeni does ninja tweak things all the time. To the better! I am curious if they are working on ARMOR (AC) now and how that protects?

No number because I have no tool to show. I KNOW I take less damage.....Not much....but in the 10%ish range.

but in all honesty, i do not mind. Call me a cynic, but certain API changes during the CB, a lack of tagret dolls, a lack of detailed skill tooltips, and most certainly other combat related problems pretty much hinted at such types of issues, don't think anyone is shocked reading this.

    This.

And I'm not buying the "it's hard making an MMO" excuse from apologists, stuff like this should have been beta fixed.

    Enjoyed reading the thread.

A few things i would like to add.

1: In PvE most non boss mobs have only 10% damage mitigation. Most good PvP players will try to obtain at least soft cap armor and spell resist (via gear or buffs). Thus spell/armor pen works much better in PvP then PvE. Crit works much better in PvE then PvP. So gear for crit in PvE and spell/armor pen in PvP imo.

2: Soft Cap Spell Resist and Armor is 35% damage mitigation while hard cap is 50% damage mitigation. This is true no matter what level the player is as each time a player levels it increases their soft/hard cap required. PvE and PvP have different soft/hard caps.

3: DO not assume that an ability that causes magic or flame damage is targeting the enemies spell resistance. Some abilities (IE: Flame lash) target the enemies armor even when it stats it deals magic or flame damage. Know your abilities modifiers.

4: Until it is fixed the Sharpened Trait is the best weapon trait in game for PvP by a very large margin. It is good for builds that target an enemies spell resist or armor. It is not wise to stack other sources of spell penetration until this is fixed. IE: Light Armor and Sharpened trait means no other spell pen is required. If using medium or heavy armor then either use the spell pen mundus stone or wear 2 pieces of light. (after making sure your abilities actually work against spell resist and not armor).

    *waves with his orcs arms*

There is no "the best". Or the goal of ESO is not to have any "the best".
There are builds who are different suited for different situations depending on who is playing.

    That's ESO.

Not class A, Race B, Gear 5, Stat 8. Sorry.

Things like with Traits stacks....you can calculate or find out. But "the best"? Tsk. Nope.....

The best is supposed to be...the best player, team or alliance. Whatever they wear.

Right now a purple weapon with Sharpened and three pieces light armor with Concentration will totally blow through any softcap Spell Resistance in PvP and a gold weapon with Sharpened will blow through Hard Cap Spell Resistance with the same three pieces of light concentration.
A gold weapon with Sharpened is supposed to increase your Spell Pen (called Focus if you use any sort of extended stat addon) by 16%. That is multiply your raw Focus by 1.16. Instead it multiplies your raw Focus by 15. Similarly a rather unimpressive blue weapon with Sharpened will multiply your focus by 4.

So, is this the best trait? Does a trait which can completely negate a defense better than a trait that does small increases in enchantment damage? Considering that one piece of blue Impen armor complete negates a gold Precise weapon, would Sharpened thus be better than Precise?

Sharpened is currently broken. It is certainly not supposed to be multiplying your focus by x4 or x15 but it certainly is. A quick run of any stat addon will reveal this and a quick test in a duel will confirm it.

IIRC, when i put sharpened staff into hand, focus rating shoots over 10 000. I guess that number has too many zeroes there...
