No argument from me there. In fact, to me, Nameplates are more important than chat bubbles, but as far as UI/social improvements go, I'll take what I can get. This is at least something to help with the dismal, anonymous-feeling atmosphere.
My only worry is that somehow this will be seen as enough of an improvement, and we won't see nameplates any time soon.

Those are very basic options that all on the same lines as nameplates should be present. Just as you can set health bars for self/party/etc. now, nameplates and chat bubbles should be toggleable per-channel or activity in the same fashion.

How will you know who is speaking with no nametags? All you'll see is various bubbles floating above 10+ other people in a crowd, for example. I'm not saying this in any sarcastic manner; I'm honestly curious as to the line of thought I have seen there from some people. I've seen ZOS posts confirming that chat bubbles are coming, but I haven't seen any that confirm whether they will be something that can be turned off. Having said that, it's a reasonable assumption to make, especially considering the ZOS philosophy towards immersion and minimal UI. That's a good point. I don't want to see chat bubbles, and I don't want to see nameplates (and when I say I don't want to see them I mean that I want them turned off in my own UI - I'm not opposed to the idea of them being in ESO for people who want them), but it seems to me that they should go hand in hand. Techkey1✭✭Personally I have always been in the camp of give me all of the options/features you can give me so that I can choose how I want to go forward. I like it better to have choices than to have no choices, that way if I want to us it I can, and if I don't want to use it I wont. Very simple.
I'm just glad that I am not as easily distracted, being one who has played other mmorpgs, chat bubbles (even all over the screen) have never bothered me or have taken me away from my focus (messed me up). But it has to be understood that everyone is not the same, some people can maintain focus, some people loose focus, some people like a simple ui, some people could care less about a complex ui (don't care if stuff is all over the screen), some people have to conserve PC cpu and gpu power/resources , some people have PC's that can just go all out, and some have used such things to bench how weak/strong their PC is as far as FPS and resolution, whatever, whatever, whatever, lol. All of this and more just makes choice relevant again.
The option of choice involving chat bubbles gives everyone a chance to just do what they like regarding the chat bubble feature. Use it or don't use it. Again, very simple. CP 477 | Dark Elf | Dragon Knight DPS | Ebonheart Pact | Solo Player | No alts

1. I consider nametags to be conditionally useful. Let's you know who is where, and thus a bit easier to spot a particular person in an uncrowded evironment. That said, to me that isn't really all that important.
2. I find chat bubbles to be completely useless. The chat box is superior for conveying non-overlapping text that you can always scroll back through as needed, as well as clearly showing you who exactly said what.Achievements Suck1 -

The difference is pretty obvious. When you are not on TS people can see that and they will have to adapt to you not being on TS.
But NO ONE WILL KNOW whether you're reading from the chat window or the bubbles if they're talking to you, so why the hell should they care?
Seriously, I don't understand these arguments. Some ppl like to read the chat in the chat window, others like to read the chat in a bubble on the screen. Some ppl do not want to see *any* chat and turn it off completely. Bubbles will not change anything. It's just another way to represent chat in the game. And one that you can choose or not. So why care what others prefer?

Not being able to do this is the stupidest design decision ever. Ten years ago EQ had a chat system where this was possible and you could set the window transparency, time to fade, faded transparency etc. Sometimes it's like these developers have never even played an mmo. I mean seriously. One window and everything goes to it? Tabs are useless because you create an either/or situation. Monkeys could have done a better job here.
Chat bubbles does not in any way solve this.
Most people use team speak anyway for anything that requires coordination, chat bubbles are just going to be ugly and in the way.0 -

That is already possible in the game. I'm using multiple chat windows myself. Did you never notice the small plus sign at the top of the chat window?
Edit: seems like I missed a small part of your post. The way I read it now is that you do not want to use tabs, but instead want to have multiple chat windows visible at the same time. Mhm.. that would work. I wouldn't use it myself, but it seems like a nice addition to the interface.
