Do We Really Need to Confirm Email Deletion?

You can't even delete attachments, so there's that. What's the risk here? You might delete a message about a guild sale that contains no useful info? Oh, darn.

And as somebody who actually suffers from occasional nerve discomfort thanks not only to gaming but my job, I find this kind of insulting.

Oh, nevermind. It's not worth it.

The point of a confirmation dialog, as any competent GUI designer will tell you, is to allow the user to recover from making a mistake they do not realize they are making, or to allow the user to recover from a decision that they now regret.

An extra "Are You Sure" click does not stop people from accidentally deleting an email. People will still use the muscle memory click sequence with or without this, just one extra step. I do not stop and think about the confirmation other than "really, you want me to confirm what i just told you to do?". Any competent GUI designer knows this, which is why the Deleted Items folder and the Trash can was invented.

If they really cared about people deleting by mistake, then a Deleted Items folder would do more to allow someone to recover from a mistake than an annoying Nanny action.

Besides, what can be in an email, other than an attachment, that is so important that it can't be deleted by mistake?

No, adding a confirmation does not prevent people from just clicking through it anyway. The point of the dialog is not to prevent the user from making a mistake, it is to allow them a chance to correct a mistake.

As we have both said, the proper solution is a way to recover, like with a trashcan. This costs more money, though.

But, since we both seem to be referring to competent GUI designers, you also know that in an environment where there is no recovery from an action with a permanent result that serious thought has to be given to the confirmation dialog.

I would not presume to say that all email is unimportant.

How about you delete an e-mail with a COD for say 50000 gold and because of game lag the 'take all' key didn't register so you end up deleting the 50k.
Bet you'd have wanted an extra keypress then wouldn't ya. :p

You might actually have an argument if you could delete mails with attachments on them. You can't. They changed it after launch. So no, we don't want that extra key press because it's clearly not needed.

This is just another example of ZoS wasting time on something that isn't needed, wasn't asked for and ultimately annoys more players than it helps.

If they really wanted to do something about it, they would've added a trash bin where they could retrieve a recently deleted mail not like the mail would actually contain anything but still. Where as the most actively requested change to the mail system (replying to a mail) has been ignored for over 6 months!

I hated the times when I wanted to delete mail, clicked X, nothing happened, clicked X a few more times....log back in the next day and find out that I deleted more mails than intended. With this system, I know for certain that I actually pressed the button, and seldom ever re-try the deletion process now.

It is a small, yet very helpful feature.

Didn't it technically cost them money to put the stupid feature in place in the first place? Just remove it if putting in a trashcan is too much trouble. (they'd probably break a bunch of things trying to do that anyway)

Useless adition. Confirming on those that have items was enough.

A simple checkbox, that would let the individual player decide if they want to get the confirmation or not.
Then those who dont want it can say so, and those who do want it can keep it.
Those of us who then off course choose to not have it, should not have an option to get items back that we deleted that way from support B)

There should only be a confirmation if there is actually an unclaimed attachment.

That said, according to other posts (I've never tried it) you can't delete an e-mail with attachments regardless. So the confirmation is 100% useless.

Heck, I'd be more in favor of autodeleting an e-mail when attachments are collected than I would this confirmation.

What? Are you.. I don't even...

OK, this is complete crap if it's true. Do you know how many times I am destroying anything I can in a dungeon because I can't loot anymore? That alone gets me left behind by groups and PUGs. Now, I am going to be sitting there bowing to some nanny software while the mobs respawn around me.

Was there some thing in the text of the email that is so important that we need to be sure of ourselves before we delete it?

It's one thing to use an addon to enhance an aspect of the game, or modify the UI to give more information than normal, I call it customizing the game. But to have to use an Addon to fix something that was broken in an attempt to fix something that was not broken in the first place is just going to far.

This was one mail option I don't think anyone asked for - apart from maybe the Customer Support people who had probably had enough of problems with deleted pet mail items. We do need a reply option and we do need improvements to the mail telling us something has sold - they need to tell us what has been sold and to whom.

I think the geniuses behind windows Vista's security alerts/questions helped them out on this one.

It's about good design and not the actual time it takes for an additional click. Software must be designed to accommodate to users needs and desires not the other way around. You should be asking why a pointless feature has been added instead of saying that it's not too difficult to cope with this new addition.

A real big pain in the *** when you have 100+ pvp mail to open everyday. I personally opened about 1000 yesterday because I had let them stack...

This is definitely something that should have been added as an OPTION. You think they would of added something better like a reply button, but it just seems they want to grief the player base.

To be fair, I would assume/hope non-replaceable disguises are pretty much at the very bottom of things you would want to destroy to make room for random drop 1302.

I think I'm fairly fine with trophies/pets/disguises having something like that implemented.
