Do We Really Need to Confirm Email Deletion?

OK. Before, we could not delete an email that had attachments until we took the attachments. Cool, good way to not lose stuff. However, now, we have to confirm that the email deletion. This can get quite irritating with 15 to 20 hireling emails a day, plus purchase emails, etc. Why did they add this extra step? Was there some thing in the text of the email that is so important that we need to be sure of ourselves before we delete it?

Instead of adding this, they should have added a "Reply" option to the mails.

I have limited use of my hand. This just makes the game harder and more painful for me and reduces the amount of time I can play. There should have been an option to turn this on/off.

This was one mail option I don't think anyone asked for - apart from maybe the Customer Support people who had probably had enough of problems with deleted pet mail items. We do need a reply option and we do need improvements to the mail telling us something has sold - they need to tell us what has been sold and to whom.

15-20 hireling emails a day? I get 64. Frankly, this is the most useless feature I've seen, as it isn't even possible to delete a mail that has attachments anyway, so the only mails that this warning prevents you from accidentally deleting are ones where you don't lose anything if you delete them.

If mail had some basic features like being able to select more than one at a time and take all attachments or delete all, then it wouldn't be a big deal.

This new 'feature' caused me to send an expletive-laced /feedback within minutes of using mail yesterday. I guess I'll get used to it if it stays, but should at least have had an OFF toggle.

If you really want to put a mail safeguard in place without annoying people, just create a deleted mail queue that lets people temporarily restore deleted emails if they made a mistake. Much better than a useless confirmation.

Customer support probably got overwhelmed with questions about retrieving deleted emails. And they saw this as a way of relieving some of the stress and saving money.

A better solution would probably be to add a trash bin, were deleteded messages would be stored for a set ammount of time :)

Only prompt for confirmation if there are items or gold attached to the mail you are trying to delete.

    Yes!

I agree that the mail interface has a lot of issues. One of the worst ones is that you can actually delete mail that you did not intend to delete because the interface can be deceptive.

The point of a confirmation dialog, as any competent GUI designer will tell you, is to allow the user to recover from making a mistake they do not realize they are making, or to allow the user to recover from a decision that they now regret. It is particularly important when the action is permanent and not recoverable, like deleting mail in ESO.

If they want to implement a method to recover lost mail, much as they implemented a way to recover items that have been sold, I am all for that solution. It completely eliminates the need for the confirmation since mail can be aged off gracefully, allowing time to recover from mistakes.

If they want to have a toggle so that the query can be turned off, that is another way to solve the problem. It is not as good as having a way to recover deleted mail, though.

Honestly, they have so many GUI design issues and blunders that I hope they address them first before returning to this one.

    I don't really care, it's a minor thing.

On my last MMO someone complained because they deleted a mail and weren't asked t confirm it. Some either way someone is going to be complaining.

But I personally don't care either way.

no vote since not a lot of options. I am guessing they got a lot of support requests for people deleting emails with attachments. It is a minor annoyance that is probably saving their support team a lot of tickets.

How about you delete an e-mail with a COD for say 50000 gold and because of game lag the 'take all' key didn't register so you end up deleting the 50k.
Bet you'd have wanted an extra keypress then wouldn't ya. :p

This would have been so much better!

What's next, getting asked if I'm sure I want to deconstruct something? That actually may have helped me a couple times when I accidentally deconstructed something I was saving for research. But I still don't want it.

Just like I don't want to be asked 50+ times a day if I want to delete an email that tells me nothing other than I sold something in a guild store (and still doesn't even tell me which item/which store).

Edit to add: I have NEVER been able to delete any email that had an attachment on it. The option to delete those does not appear. Why are people arguing that we need this new feature so you can't do that? Can they do something that's impossible for me to do?

And yet there is no confirmation for depositing items into guild banks. I lost 30k back in May thanks to accidentally clicking on a guild bank and our GM refusing to return my items.

This confirmation thing is even more annoying considering the lack of other mail options. As others have stated, no reply function or detail about guild store sales. It's embarrassing.

Never have I ever accidentally deleted mail. I should be able to disable the confirmation. Hitting one extra key adds up when you do it a million times.

    Yes!

The point of a confirmation dialog, as any competent GUI designer will tell you, is to allow the user to recover from making a mistake they do not realize they are making, or to allow the user to recover from a decision that they now regret.

An extra "Are You Sure" click does not stop people from accidentally deleting an email. People will still use the muscle memory click sequence with or without this, just one extra step. I do not stop and think about the confirmation other than "really, you want me to confirm what i just told you to do?". Any competent GUI designer knows this, which is why the Deleted Items folder and the Trash can was invented.

If they really cared about people deleting by mistake, then a Deleted Items folder would do more to allow someone to recover from a mistake than an annoying Nanny action.

Besides, what can be in an email, other than an attachment, that is so important that it can't be deleted by mistake?

There was nothing wrong with it before... in that you could not delete an email with attachments or Gold until you had retrieved those items. This saves accidentally losing anything valuable.. this button is basically a defunct extra.

The confirmation should have been for deconstructing items that you have put in the bank. That would have been useful. Or, say, make it possible to flag items in the bank as "do not deconstruct". Right now, I have to double check during every deconstruction session in order not to accidentally destroy items I want to keep for research or use.

Considering the UI blunders they have all around in the game, this is not a big issue, but it is appalling that they introduced this useless new feature without fixing any of the long standing bugs and design errors. This shows a lack of direction and an inability to prioritize that does not bode well.

You could never delete an email with an attachment in it. Still can't delete an email with an attachment in it. This is for the text that is left over after you have taken the attachment or an email that has no attachment.

So, we never could lose our precious Kuta before by accidentally deleting an email.

To the geniuses saying we need this to prevent people from deleting gold/items:

Have you actually tried doing that? It's impossible. You can not delete mail with stuff attached, gold or items.

I like that feature, it is working as it should. It does me no good to have to click an extra button because even if I realize later I didn't want to delete the mail, I'm not going to ponder it every time I am asked for confirmation. I am going to click that extra key and move on.

Trash bin is a good idea but they would probably break a ton of stuff implementing it. Reply and forward would have been so nice, no idea why they felt this was a better use of their time.

Maybe it was CS, which means they are coding the game for their staff and not for us.
