Achievement Suggestion: [Master Treasure Hunter] / How to Make Treasure Maps Worthwhile

Rodario
Rodario
✭✭✭✭✭
As we all know, the loot from treasure chests is a bit underwhelming. As a result, treasure maps are often sold for miniscule amounts or just destroyed.

Personally, I like finding treasure maps, figuring out the clues and digging up the chests. The loot is just a bonus rare temper to me.

My Suggestion

I suggest achievements tied to treasure maps be introduced.

Tracking Method

A consumable and bound trophy coin is added to the loot table of these treasure chests. Consuming the coin updates/completes the achievement. (This idea is based on the creature collectibles system and is meant as a possible solution in case just opening treasure chests is not trackable.)

Zone Achievements:

These achievements are completed by finding and opening all (non CE) treasure-map-treasures within a zone. Example below:

[Glenumbra Treasure Hunter]

- Find all treasure map locations within Glenumbra

+ 10 Achievement Points

Meta Achievement Subsets

These subsets are achieved by completing all zone achievements within an alliance's territory. Example Below:

[Covenant Treasure Hunter]

- Complete [Glenumbra Treasure Hunter]
- Complete [Stormhaven Treasure Hunter]
- ...

+ 50 Achievement Points

To increase motivation and make the ultimate goal [Master Treasure Hunter] not seem so far away, I believe in-between rewards are the way to go:

"Complete one of the achievements below"

- [Covenant Treasure Hunter]
- [Dominion Treasure Hunter]
- [Pact Treasure Hunter]

+ Uncommon Dye: [Treasure Hunter's Copper]

"Complete any two of the achievements below"

- [Covenant Treasure Hunter]
- [Dominion Treasure Hunter]
- [Pact Treasure Hunter]

+ Uncommon Dye: [Treasure Hunter's Silver]

Meta Achievement

This is achieved by completing all zone achievements and will grant a title and a rare dye:

[Master Treasure Hunter]

- Complete the "Open 1'000 treasure chests" achievement
- Complete [Covenant Treasure Hunter]
- Complete [Dominion Treasure Hunter]
- Complete [Pact Treasure Hunter]
- Complete [Coldharbour Treasure Hunter]
- Complete [Cyrodiil Treasure Hunter]

+ 50 Achievement Points
+ Title: [Master Treasure Hunter]
+ Rare Dye: [Treasure Hunter's Gold]

Much like is the case with the fishing achievement, I believe [Craglorn Treasure Hunter] should not be part of the [Master Treasure Hunter] meta achievement, but be its own achievement that awards an uncommon dye.

Why I think this would be a good idea:

If treasure map achievements are introduced...

- The incentive for hunting down treasures increases
- The market value of treasure maps shoots up
- Players will be excited about finding a treasure map
- It's an easy way to give players more to do
- It will increase the incentive to explore all alliance territories
- Treasure maps being high value items will improve immersion and atmosphere

I hope the community likes this idea and I'm very interested in hearing your opinion on it.

Thanks for reading, discuss.

{EDIT - September 12th}: Added meta achievement subsets / Added more detail.

{EDIT - September 16th}: Attempt at making the thread title more enticing.

{EDIT - November 25th}: Added a possible tracking system.

There's lots of improvements that could still be made to treasures, inluding better/more random loot. I decided against making a list of possible changes to just focus on this one easily implementable idea I had a few minutes before.

Buy a horse;) I have 170 with my fat horse. 120 with the speedy one I use in Cyro. Also, bank space is a life saviour, I have 160 bank space atm.

And I agree, I LOVE treasure maps, I find it very disappointing there's no achievement or anything for them.

But then again, if they implemented it now it probably wouldn't backtrack, just like all those crafting achievements and would just screw all of us who've already found most of those treasures over since we'd have to redo them all to get the achievement we deserve>.<

As a side note, there technically is an achievement tied to them, as they count towards the 1000 treasure chests for that achievement.

I agree as well, there aint really any incentive to go doing these map hunts anymore, the loot the chest have are mediocre and almost always leaves them behind or deconstuct them.

another way of going about this is making a special treasure map gear set, like they have on dolmens, thats actually worth collection.

I really hope they'll find a way to make it retroactive. Even if that's not possible, I'd say better late than never.

Look at it like the thieves guild or dark brotherhood. They'll most likely be implemented alongside the mages and fighter's guild quest lines, so only new players and alts will be able to take advantage fully. The rest will just have to go back and complete low level content to experience them.

It's still an addition that improves the game, so it not being retroactive should not be a reason to leave it out IMO.

I'd feel like spamming if I repost this as a poll. Yes it'd probably get more attention, but so far those who care enough to comment seem to like the idea

I may need to get better at creating interesting titles for my suggestions, though I certainly won't start using titles like "What this game needs...", just to get more people to look at the thread.

Yes, well, that's not much of an incentive, is it? I did include that one in the meta achievement though.

I like to compare these suggested achievements to the existing fishing achievements. Imagine there was just one fishing achievement, called "Catch 1'000 Fish".

I LOVE this idea. I also really just feel that treasure chests need to be more FUN and UNPREDICTABLE. They should have a chance of having a rare/unique costume, maybe just several thousand gold, or the occasional purple drop. There also need to be "bad" treasure chests that have a small percentage chance of turning up. One should be empty save for a note saying "Ha! Got here first!" One should be full of small spiders (can't believe I'm saying that, I HATE spiders!) that attack when you open it. One should have the cursed skeleton of the LAST treasure hunter in it that attacks you. That sort of thing. Just, really up the FUN factor.

I have one reservation about this idea, the maps are random drops, so finding them all in the first place would be a herculean effort. It might be a good idea to have a few half way achievements, so as not to scare people off.

Oh, and you need to get the Achievement for finding the treasure not the map. (obviously the game only reveals the treasure if you have the map, so it's already covered)

As long as the treasure either doesn't spawn or doesn't count towards the achievement before reading the map AND read maps become bound, I think this would be an excellent addition to the game. But I think the lock picking system needs an overhaul too.

The treasure doesn't appear unless you have the map, and the map disappears afterwards.

Are you just rephrasing what I said or are you saying that this feature is currently in place?
I thought they were just artful renditions of common chests, so "why should I spend hours actually treasure hunting?" when I stumble upon this nearly worthless treasure every 5 minutes.

But, If the latter, then I have destroyed soo many treasure maps :s.
