What did you get from the Writers' AMA?

What did you get from the writers' AMA on reddit*?
For me, perhaps the best bit was:
We WILL be adding senche-tiger mounts sometime soon, ...

    I didn't get a thing, as I don't do reddit.
I am not spending a single penny on the game until changes are made to the game that I want to see.
    1) Remove having to be in a guild to sell items to other players at a kiosk.
    2) Cosmetic modding for armor and clothing.
    3) Difficulty slider.
    4) Fully customizable player housing that isn't tied to anything in the game other than having the correct resources and enough gold to build. Don't tie it to PvP, guild membership, or anything at all. Oh, make it instanced so as not to take up world map space, too. Zeni screwed this one up already.
Any /one/ of these things implemented would get me spending again, maybe even subbing.

I liked that we will be getting more background on the Orcs and Argonians in the new zones. The reasoning behind the Orcs joining the Daggerfall Covenant also made some sense.

Though I'm not sure I need to hear more about the Argonian reproduction system. What I have heard in ESO so far has been more than enough.

Also good to see that the writers seem to have as much fun as us with the creation of these characters and stories.

That reddit is a considerably better platform to discuss this game than the official forums. Seriously, reddit has people who are more mature than the people that frequent these forums. You should all be ashamed of yourselves.

A point I have made in a separate post - "The QQ here is tiresome. It's tiresome for those of us who would like to utilise the forums for genuine discussion..." I know there are people here who do like to have mature discussions in an informed environment, but more often than not those same discussions are hijacked by people crying about one thing or another. The ESO subreddit was not too dissimilar before the moderators there cracked down on it all.

Well spotted, Sherlock. You should be proud of yourself. Doesn't make it any less true. Read the discussions on the ESO subreddit and compare them to the discussions here, then come back and say I am wrong. People are even moaning repeatedly about the fact this AMA was held on reddit. Use your heads guys, there are a number of reasons holding it on reddit makes more sense - not least because a decent proportion of the community prefers to spend their time there and not here, amongst the constant QQ and negativity toward the game.

    You must be kidding...

If you really think that ESO players use an unofficial, external forum where you must be a member to even post then I don't know...

There is a reason why gaming companies do have own forums. A person playing ESO doesn't want to hunt down the devs at third party forums, he or she wants to get in touch at the forum where he or she has signed up after the purchase.

I do understand that you are probably very young and don't mind having hundreds of accounts in the net but you need to understand that many people are not like that. They want to stick at one place, simple as that.

I don't think - I know. http://www.reddit.com/r/elderscrollsonline/. I am not saying that all ESO players are using it, but I know that some are. 38,000 subscribers says to me that people are using it so your point in that respect is entirely wrong. But thank you for the insight.

I recognise some people don't want to use other forums and you don't have to use reddit. But if you look at other MMOs you will see devs often drop in to reddit to talk to people on their gaming subreddits so it makes sense that ESO employees would do the same. Secondly, this makes sense from an entirely marketing / PR perspective. These forums are locked to those who already play the game, and so it is a great way for people to discuss the game they play. An AMA on reddit allows that and also allows people who don't play the game to get some insight and find themselves inclined to give it a go.

In any event, reddit is incredibly easy to sign up to. It doesn't require any kind of email verification. You can create a throwaway account in a matter of seconds. That makes it more accessible than a forum locked to subscribers who need to use a verification email and an invite from a ZOS employee to get in. You are welcome to stick to one place, but nothing stops you from clicking one link to read the AMA.

Thank you for your comment on my age by the way, which is irrelevant and also goes a long way to indicating your maturity and giving credence to your post (ahem).

Why does age have anything to do with it? I am definitely not a young person, and I am a regular poster about ESO on other forums besides this one. I am also able to have far more meaningful discussions on those forums about the game, theorycrafting for my characters, and virtually everything else we may choose to discuss than what I see happening here.

While not a member or poster on Reddit, I am a member elsewhere for a reason. Most games OF tend to be like this one: too much QQ; too many know-it-alls with condescending attitudes to even the most innocuous questions from sincere players, and too many negative nancies out to put down the game just because they prefer arguing to having productive discussions about why things don't work and how could they be improved. Some people just love to troll and will do that anywhere, but OF game forums often reek with trolls. This one is no exception and in fact I'd say shines in that regard...

I see nothing wrong with participating in and encourgaing participation in other forums where the game is not only actively discussed, but done so in ways which draws more people to the game, if only for curiosity sake.

The problem for me is that reddit itself supports some of the vilest content to be found on the internet. I cannot support, or be in any way part of, a site that not only allows but protects sleaze like "upskirt" photos of unsuspecting women and "barely legal" sleaze involving young girls, to name just two of its more repugnant practices. That a professional gaming company like ZOS utilizes this site, when they could very well make their own for these kinds of events, truly sickens me.

Love how people are still defending ZoS for not utilizing their own official website for information. This issue is debated regularly on reddit - you'd fit in well there :).

I do not condone some of the content held within subreddits and some are distasteful and certainly far outside of my own moral compass. Having said that, for each of the subreddits that contain questionable content there are a dozen or more than consist of intelligent individuals having meaningful discussion. The entire concept of reddit is that it is left to the community (as far as is possible) to moderate reddit's content and downvote the content that the majority of the community feels is distasteful or unnecessary.

In any event, subreddits should be considered separate sites in themselves. In it's basest form, reddit is simply a hosting provider that hosts multiple websites but provides considerable democratic power to those that utilise those websites. Boycotting reddit over distaste for some of the content on some subreddits is almost like boycotting sites that are hosted with certain providers, because they also host pornographic sites or sites with illegal content.

Whatever your opinion on it, reddit can safely be considered the most comprehensive platform for discussion on the internet, across a plethora of topics. Banning things based on morality and censoring certain topics leads down a slippery slope to things being censored that shouldn't be. Having said that, there has been a considerable crackdown on things such as the "barely legal sleaze" you refer to. A number of the most questionable subreddits have been banned.

That isn't the only reason. I also highlighted marketing and PR reasons above, which are undoubtedly the core driving factor behind the decision to utilise reddit for this AMA. Twin reddit's accessibility with the fact it is ridiculously easy to sign up to, it becomes a virtual no brainer from a business perspective.

The point relating to negative posting is mostly said in jest. But it must be said that by utilising reddit, they will garner a more positive response from the community than they will here. I imagine an AMA held here would consist of dozens of questions pertaining to things not even related to the writing of the series - things like "WHEN R STAMINA BUILDS GUNNA B MOAR BETTER" rather than informed discussion relating to the lore and the excellent writing this game has to offer. I can see why, from an unofficial perspective, ZOS would prefer to use a platform where this won't happen and they can have adult discussion.

Edit - for the record, I would strongly encourage those of you who are so dead set against ZOS using reddit to go and read the AMA - http://www.reddit.com/r/elderscrollsonline/comments/2g0x5l/ama_with_the_eso_writing_team/ - when you are done, come back and tell me in good faith that you could expect to see the same quality of questions asked in this forum; some may have been asked, but they would have been lost amongst a ton of scrub trash.

I got that many of the current subscribers don't want new subscribers. They only want ZOS/ESO to talk to them. Which might make them feel special but would only be a strategy of running the game into the ground from the inside.

Personally, Ayrenn bugs me and will always bug me but I got to ask directly and receive some type of direct answers to my question, so that experience right there made the 1 minute sign-up completely worth it. I'm a book nerd above all else so getting some insight(s) into a story I really love from the Authors perspective is a golden ticket for me. So, that's what I took.
If options weren't necessary, and everyone played the same way, no one would use addons. Fix the UI!

This forum was and still is understaffed and suffered heavily from entirely inadequate moderation, furthermore was literally shunned by developers from the very get go. The toxicity was self-made and the subreddit would have faced the same fate, if didn't have all of the above.

Moderation and dev participation was the key to it's success and it could have been here too. But they deliberately chose to neglect that part of their audience. And people are not overly fond of being neglected.

And please, don't forget to what kind of hell the reddit mods had to go through to make it what it's today. Death threats over the change to the color scheme is something that ESO-redditors are capable of and I haven't seen that kind idiocy around her yet.

There's still no reason that ZoS can't set up a platform, even separate from these forums so that people simply interested in the game rather than only subscribers, can be part of the event. They don't HAVE to use reddit. As to reddit enacting some reforms, good. They need to be a lot more proactive about that though. There are plenty of places out there where people can go to"enjoy" the kind of trash under discussion. It has nothing to do with freedom of speech. I'm all for that. And I would not seek to shut down a site that hosted disgusting but legal content. I would simply never go to such a site myself. Which is why I don't use reddit. As a consumer, I don't shop at Wal Mart because I don't like their business practices. I'm not trying to close Wal Mart, but I have made a personal decision NOT to give them any money myself. The same applies to reddit, they don't get my business. Period. ZoS would do themselves a favor by understanding that and using a platform that their players can visit without their skin crawling.

Scriptwriters? Only people who did their jobs properly in this game. Lots of love. Didn't reddit. Need my sanity more. I rarely see anyone reading the books anyway or actually enjoying the scripted conversation, they are too busy sprinting to the next waypoint. So their work is entirely wasted on many. No wonder they ended up on reddit. Must feel like some badly written sex after that. At least 'browsers' there are literate.
