Being left-handed in Tamriel.

Perhaps you've noticed, perhaps you haven't, but right now, it's impossible to be left-handed in the game. I'd like the ability to place your sword and shield (or whatever you choose to take into battle) in either hand, so that we can have more variety. You may not even have to make new animations - just have it mirror the current ones. Not so hard, right? This isn't a huge issue, but I wouldn't mind it being added. What does the community think?

Being left handed and using a left handed mouse i have to say it has never bothered me in-game.

But if switching was an option, i'd certainly try it out!

I am a Hybrid Left Hander. Do everything but PCs with my Left Hand, I use PCs with my Right Hand (mouse)

First thing they would have to do is move the 3rd Person Camera to the other side, to support left handed weapon users. Or, just center the darn thing.

However, that being said, there is no reason why a PC could not be left or right handed, other than animations needing to be added. Don't know how hard it would be to mirror them for the Left Hand from the Right Hand.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

This is pretty much a reflection of the historical views on left-handedness (the word "sinister" comes from the latin word for left-handed, because those who were left-handed were considered to be touched by the devil), and I wouldn't be overly surprised if similar views are held in Tamriel. In medieval times those who showed signs of being left-handed while growing up were forced to become right-handed (which doesn't really work that well).

Anyone remember the third Rocky movie when they trained the southpaw to fight with his right?

I mentioned this to someone in beta, even if your character was left handed they would probably train to hold the shield the same way as everyone else. Think about facing another shield user. What good is having your shield on the same side as their shield instead of on the same side as their deadly weapon?

I'll let Rocky's coach put it this way:
Mickey: Left handed fighters, they're the worst. They try to come in there with that big left. Right's no damn good. They ought to outlaw southpaws!
Rocky Balboa: Why didn't you tell me that before?
Mickey: I didn't want to hurt your feelings.

PS, and it was Rocky II not III. My mistake.

You will reacall, however, that the strategy was to use orthodox and then switch back to his natural southpaw to throw his opponent off. Rocky's style though is southpaw.

Have to say, that could possibly add an interesting option for weapon swap, if blocking wasn't already 360 degrees. Natural fighting stance, in the middle of a fight -flip-, now it's crazy town.

I would indeed love this, could really make left handers and right handers to get more diversity.

To add to that, i would also like that dualwielders dont draw weapons crossways, it looks dangerous.

Also in modern times. When I was in the 1st grade I was forced, briefly, to write "right" handed. This was one time when having The Mother From Hell was an advantage: she soon put a stop to that. The memory of that confrontation still makes me smile. And yes, the attitude was common until not that long ago. It began to fade mid-twentieth century, at least where I live. It might still be prevalent in places less open to, ah, science.

As far as the game is concerned, having equipped myself with one of the only truly left-handed gaming mice (Razer Deathadder) and mastered the joys of the thumb-under or heel-of-the-hand spacebar, I'm not about to start over now.

Especially now that you consider that, for the left handed player using a left-handed mouse configuration, both the attack button and the weapon are are on the right (index finger), and block/shield are on the left (middle finger), it seems to me that this is a more natural configuration than what "right handed" players think of as normal. To get the same effect with a "left handed" character, I'd have to reverse the buttons.

As system that you've mastered, but which is imperfect, is always better than the latest unfamiliar thing. That's why, historically, (classical) musical instruments like pianos and flutes and so on tend to evolve slowly.

what seems to be an easy thing to you doesnt make it so, it could be 100's of hours of programming and reprogramming and testing. If so do you still think its so important in comparison to other things? If its 5 hours I'm all for it. But I'm sure its not. From what I've seen from projects probably 100th the size of an MMO its probably more on the side of 100's of horus and thus really not worth it until they can start putting in the really low priority stuff they probably have on each others pet project lists.

Agreed. I'd be OK with 100s of Osiris, or 100s of Ptahs, or even 100s of Thoths, but 100s of Horus is just out of the question.
