Emptied guild bank

We invited a new member. He asked an officer for promotion so he could take items from our bank.
All our members can and it went fine so far. This new member then went and cleared us out.

I am not naming this little whiney child (which he probably is) as he has been reported ingame by our guildstaff. I am just writing this here to warn and guild/officer NOT to give rights to new members. We learned our lesson now and i hope you all can learn from our experience.

Again, we have many members that can give and take items from our bank, but it only takes 1.
This character looked like he signed up on a 2nd account and transferred everything to an unknown 2nd account.

I'm not gonna berate you on the merits of vetting new members to your community and/or guild....but...

Do you not have a process in your guild for members ranking up and getting promotions?

Would it not have been prudent for your officer(s) to retrieve stuff from the guild bank FOR this member, rather then allowing them full access?

How long was this member NEW before he was given a rank that allowed him to fully access the guild bank?

That aside, I'm sorry for your losses.

if a person asked for officer upon entering the guild, red flags should go up right a way.

Its sad you have to learn it the hard way, that there are people in online games that cant be trusted, and even worse those people will get away with it again and again, since the no shaming/naming rule on the forum, which I totally get.

I hope the ESO will be able to do something about it, since it looks like it happens more and more frequently as it seems.

the first rule as guild master, is you have the full responsibility for the things happing in the guild, that includes also the safety of the guild bank.

for future, make like 2-4 trade officers in the guild to withdraw stuff for the rest of the guild, depending on how big it is.

when thats said, damn I feel for you and the whole guild, it sucks that people like those exist

No one should have bank access for the first 30 days. If they want something they can message a leader and have it mailed to them. Guildmasters do need to have better management tools though. They should be able to set daily withdrawal limits for example.

I agree with this. Our problem happened as we had an officer that made a slight mistake.
We have an open system, every member can use the bank, i do not want to take that right away from them. But setting a max on how much people can take out is well needed.
Its already there in quite a few mmo's.

The problem is that guilbank management options are lacking. It is all or nothing.... There should be tools like X withdrawals a day, lock certain bankslots for everyone e.g. Please add this Zenimax!

Never give access to the bank, but the most trusted people.
They can petition by email to the officer, banker, guild master and you can send the item.

Someone above said 30 days. That is not enough. If you played EVE you should know that.

Whole alliances collapsed, some with many years of history and holdings (eg ΒοΒ), just because someone who was member for years, decided to switch sides. End result everything was lost overnight.

    So trust none.....

ESO has the worst guild bank system in the history off MMO's that have guild bank systems. The inability to set different deposit/withdrawal permissions for multiple tabs is really pretty unforgivable.

Leaving it an all-or-nothing that depends on TRUST in an anonymous internet context? It would be like trusting people will behave in an insecure Chinese wireless cafe.

Whoever thought of this must live in a bubble.

This has always been a problem in every game, so even though a no class person has plundered your guild bank you now have learned a hard lesson.

Officer's only can remove items, period. Then mail to person requesting said item. Its the safest way to handle this type of situation.

Now start refilling the bank and make it a guild event :)

^This, is the only way to go. Anyone can dump stuff into a guild bank but only officers can take things out. I know it's annoying but it only take one jerk out of hundreds of good people to screw things up for everyone else

In Wow, FFXIV, and other titles, guild banks have multiple tabs and you can set different permissions for each tab. This lets you put "junk" items you don't care about but that others leveling up might find useful on the community tab, and keep all your higher quality crafting mats on another tab only officers can access.

I agree though. For this game, officers must micro-manage all withdrawals, and if people don't like that, let them find another guild.

It is pretty inconvenient for everyone, but it is all we get at this point.

I completely agree that guild banks need more options on how to restrict access. X items per day based on your rank or different tabs in the bank for different ranks would help a lot. That way your first promotion may allow for 1 item per day, but only from the "members" tab of the bank. You could have an "officer" tab that would only be accessible to officer rank or higher no matter how many withdrawals you are permitted to per day.

Set up 2 guilds, one that only guild officers have access to bank. The second guild all members have access to bank. So when a member joins the main guild, they also join the second guild. Two invites are sent one for each guild.

High end stuff will be in the main guild bank and the common and low end stuff in the second guild bank. Gold will be kept in the main bank as well.

In ESO this means you double your banking space, double your vendors and double the amount of items a member can sell from guild vendors.

    Problem solved, somewhat.

Rubbish. Many MMOs and guild systems start out with simple (=crap) bank designs. They usually get better bank systems after a year or so.
... Whoever thought of this must live in a bubble.

It's because it is cheaper to do the development for a decent bank system once you have enough regular revenue to support that development time. When MMOs are starting, they never have enough money to finish everything at the start.

Daily withdrawal limits per rank would be a great addition to the guild interface!

My guild has an open bank and we haven't really had any problems. The trick is to put stuff that's more of a convenience in the guild bank while keeping actually valuable stuff (like gold mats) in personal banks. Anything that goes in that bank is a donation to the guild and could be gone forever the minute after it's deposited.

As examples, some things we do put in our guild bank: base materials, green/blue upgrade mats, provisioning mats, runes, blue trials gear, etc. If we lost all of that, it really wouldn't be a huge deal.

It also helps to have a dedicated officer to keep an eye on the transaction history and Roomba from time to time - thanks, Vedrasi! :)

    @Iradicus‌, if they're [self-snip]'s IRL, they're probably [self-snip]'s in the game.
I'm glad you've had good luck with most of your base.

Might I ask, how did you come across this individual in order to put out the invite initially?

I try to get a feel for people, and usually make sure they're willing to give back first. Most reasonable people won't have a problem with this method.

(Temporary) withdraw is an email or whisper away. This is why I am not a fan of chat open invites.

You'll get plenty of people to come to the buffet, but few will actually stick around to help clean up.

    Dev suggestion:

One more bitfield indicating which guild rank can withdraw which item would cure this. It could be a per guild bank slot thing, not the same as a per item thing, and would not be overly difficult to implement nor would it add tremendous stress to the server.

Throw a filter on there and you can see straight away what you have free access to at your current guild rank and what you have to ask for.

In the meantime, I'm more comfortable when people ask how they can advance in rank, vice simply asking to be advanced. And withdraw privileges alone is not a sufficient reason.

    Good luck.
Just because you don't like the way something is doesn't necessarily make it wrong...

We actively recruit both from random dungeon groups and by posting in zonechat. We had no problems at all untill this...person..showed up and suckered one of our officers.

Our members did manage to fill the bank again in a few days, thats how most of our members are. We changed our promotion policy now so it (hopefully) will never happen again. As i do not want to take the rights from all our longtime members.
Now we only promote new recruits if they have shown they are here for the guild by using ts, grouping etc. Then the staff will talk to eachother and choose to promote or not.
