I respectfully disagree. I don't think there should be a distinction between being active in the game and active in the guild. At least not programmatically. (If the guild set standards and the members choose to enforce them, that's up to them.)

Otherwise, someone at ZOS needs to provide a list of what activities count as "guild activity," so we can add them to our daily chore list to ensure we don't inadvertently encounter this problem.

Hmm, in one of the guilds I belong to, I'm the only officer that currently logs on, the other 2 officers and the guild leader (who are brothers or roommates) haven't logged in for almost 2 months now. I've contacted customer support asking to be made guild leader and they've told me all they can do is contact the current guild leader and ask him to promote me. @ZOS_MichaelM Any chance I can get a promotion?

That sounds like what they would say because I'm sure he is going to resub just to promote someone lol

In that case, try talking with those active in that guild, and leave to form a new guild, after all, if the guild leader and guild officers aren't there, they can't hear you discuss the situation.

All guilds need the guild leader to actually do stuff, like promote people, boot inactive members if there isn't enough space, arrange events, mediate disputes, arrange mentoring, etc.

Hi, before patch 1.3.x gamemasters could promote existing officers into guildmaster, if the actual one had been offline for more 30 days. After patch 1.3, their tools broke and they no longer can do this. They can only contact the guildmaster hoping he resubs to promote another one. It's ridiculous, but that's it

    Before 1.3:
While we fully understand how frustrating this situation must be for a lot of the guild members, we are only able to remove Guild Masters under very specific conditions.
Please allow us to investigate this issue. If we believe a change is necessary, we will be happy to assist with transferring leadership from the inactive Guild Master.
This investigation as already been eased up by the information that you provided and we will only act on your order if the present situation maintains (where the guild master if away). If the investigation has a positive outcome, then the transfer will be possible.
Again, you should talk with the immediate officers that share the same position as you and draw an effective plan that will benefit and improve your community.
Should there be any other doubts or concerns that you may want to see addressed or clarified, please let us know and we will be more than happy to repay your passion for the game.

    After 1.3:
Thank you for contacting The Elder Scrolls Online Team.

Being a guild master myself, I understand how this situation is impacting your gaming experience. Please allow us to investigate this issue. If we believe a change is necessary, we will be happy to assist with contacting your inactive Guild Master.

However, please be aware that while the ability to change guild leaders does exist, recent changes to the guild system have made using that ability problematic at this time. It can actually destroy your guild's functionality. We hope to regain our ability to transfer guild leadership soon, but we currently lack a way to do so safely.
Thank you for your patience and understanding

Fair enough. I think what might matter more is how large the guild is and how many officers does it have and so on. If someone is basically THE guild leadership in a small guild, for instance, then I would like to see them actually take part in guild runs and just basically help out the others in the guild at least some of the time. But if the leadership is actually spread among 3-4 people or more and one of them has just been logging in to craft, etc, but doesn't participate in guild activities, then I don't see that being as much of a problem.

If you have 5+ layers of guild membership, most likely the top layer is founder/GM and the next one down will be guild officers. Functionally they will be the same outside of their titles, that's how I see it at least. What most likely happened in the OPs situation is that the player in the next guild level down didn't have sufficient controls to keep the guild running smoothly. I suggest giving sufficient permissions to someone in the guild you trust if you go through phases of light activity like was mentioned.

    On the surface, that would seem to be one answer, but sometimes leaving is not that simple. My original guild from beta was very active and close knit during the beta and at the beginning of live. Some of us were very "married" let's say, to our guild concept which was tied to our guild name. In this respect, to leave it means we would lose our name with which we have identified since the beginning - all because our GM had the unfortunate idea that just dissappearing without a word would be perfectly fine, just as he also refused to answer e-mails, and all other forms of contact. ZoS has not done a thing about it, and the officers we had left also due to this problem. We hav emoved on to form with other guilds meantime, but the name - our name - remains locked to a ghost. >8{

It's simple, the ZOS Gods made a decision, and so it was, and came to be, that he was reinstated as leader of his meager guild of brigands and harlots.

Right now, the only members that ever log into the game are recruits with no bank access and I don't remember the last time there was anything in guild chat. If I'm promoted, I'll try to make it an active guild again. Until them, I'm able to use it as 500 bank slots that are exclusively mine. Hmm, maybe I should consider it a blessing and leave it as-is! :)

So are we ever going to get a straight answer on how this was possible?

I doubt that it was through a simple mail to CS.

I have been trying to get the guild leader position reassigned for over a month. That is a month during which there has been e-mail after e-mail with CS effectively saying that all they can do is wait for our guild leader to return.

Obviously it isn't all they could do, as they seem to have reassigned the position in this person's case.

In the mean time the number of active players in the guild has dropped by about 50% and we have had about 20% of our member base quit the guild entirely.

    ...great.

In the end, after 3 months of effort put into the guild as the only active officer (hire, keep it topped, kick inactives, handle welcome/kick emails, etc.) , i decided to resign and leave (the guild) to its fate.
I could not stand to see the steady flow of people leaving every day as no guild vendor could be hired.
And i'm not into guild vendors - but i cannot blame people if they want them and i cannot provide any assistance, so they decide to leave in the end.
And last, there was a member that insisted that a guildmaster can leave for years and yet he has the right to keep the guild leadership - and in the end he was shitting me in front of the entire guild that i wanted to takeover only to steal the bank contents!. That burnt me completely out.

Ah, the harsh world of mmorpgs! But in the end, i now feel relieved as i can focus on other aspects of the game.

There is a legitimate question here on how the CS handled the situation and what were the general events that led to something like this. @rotenkid99 do you mind sharing what general info you can on the situation so others can avoid it?

Honestly I have no idea what happened. I'm just glad it's been resolved. He says I promoted him to leader, which I suppose isn't impossible, though I seriously doubt I would have just handed the guild over (there's even an 'are you sure' message before you do)

As for being active in the guild. A little back story here for ya.. This is my first mmo, i started the guild opening week with my best friend as a way to make some money after seeing 'guild cut' in other trade guilds. We figured 'why aren't we making money off this?' So the guild was made.
I paid users out of pocket 100g to join figuring i'd make my money back after sales started happening. After realizing that wasn't how things worked, I stopped the payouts and let it grow as a trade guild.
Eventually i wanted a community and started messaging members when they were online for their player professions and started to list them in the roster for other members to quickly find someone if they needed (man i need some armor, just check the roster for an online member who's a smith)
Then summer rolls around and life got quite busy, being a trade guild, it wasn't like we did guild activities or anything like that, so it wouldn't be a huge issue if I wasn't around as much.
One day a member mails me and notices that membership is down, asks if he could get a promotion to help stir things up a bit. I thought it was a great idea, promoted him, and mailed him back saying 'lets see what you can do, here's your shot man'
Then checked recently and noticed i wasn't the gm anymore. I looked online about how someone could take over a guild and only found things around the lines of 'if a gm jumped ship, it wasn't unheard of for cs to promote a member'
So I submit a ticket, post this thread, and here we are.

A few things could have happened:
    1) I dropped the ball and handed it over unknowingly (unlike me, i'm a very cautious person, but still possible.)
    2) He's lying to me and contacted cs to get it claiming I was inactive. In which case I should have seen an in game message (don't check email hardly ever) and cs should have checked my logs before handing it over.

I hate to say it, but I want to have faith in zenimax and am leaning towards that it was my own fault.

A suggestion for moving the seat of power though: make it as hard to step down as a gm as it is to delete a character. The 'ok' and 'cancel' buttons are close together and it's apparent some pretty critical accidents can happen.

Sorry for stirring the pot everyone, i'm sure you other gms are safe, so long as you aren't trying to run a laid back guild with an ambitious member or two ;)
