First person; as much as the game allows me to.

I use first person the majority of the time, the only time I do use third person is when I am out specifically looking for ore.

I would use first person all the time but the moment i realized that the actual character position (where he is currently looking) is not synced with where you look in first person it broke it for me :( Basically when I sidestrafe focusing on something in front of me (first person) the actual character is actually running and facing left/right. It is even more annoying when at any time you access any menu in first person your character turns so you can see him but then he does not turn back where you were facing. So you think you are actually looking forward and meanwhile your character is actually facing a completely oppostie direction. So for me FOV slider wont fix a thing.

I only play in third person.

Dont get my wrong , in a normal ES game i would only play in first person , but those are single player games , closing my field of view for nothing in a MMO is not something i would do.

I'm definitely a fulltime 3rd person player. I find first person too restrictive in terms of FOV. I need to see what's around me or I start to twitch.

    Third all the way, baybee.
I am not spending a single penny on the game until changes are made to the game that I want to see.
    1) Remove having to be in a guild to sell items to other players at a kiosk.
    2) Cosmetic modding for armor and clothing.
    3) Difficulty slider.
    4) Fully customizable player housing that isn't tied to anything in the game other than having the correct resources and enough gold to build. Don't tie it to PvP, guild membership, or anything at all. Oh, make it instanced so as not to take up world map space, too. Zeni screwed this one up already.
Any /one/ of these things implemented would get me spending again, maybe even subbing.

Not having a demi-god's view of the battlefield. Just being a normal mortal with limited vision, no eyes in the back of my head.

But you still have a god's view of the battlefield. The red circles and sparkle attacks are not the view of mortal eyes.

Turn those off and then I'll buy your reasoning.

Until they add a way to change FoV (field of view) in first person, I will never use it.

Silly console devs dont understand the needs of PC gamers with large screens.

1st person exclusively in PvE but the FOV limitations are really putting a dampener on that experience.

In PvP, i switch between 1st and 3rd depending on the situation. The current 1st just doesn't give you enough situational awareness for PvP.

I always played TES in FPV...I'd set FOV to 75 (85 or whatever) and get on with it, only swapping to 3rd person for those epic screen shots.

In ESO I ran around first few lvls in FPV...but I am now always in 3rd person view.

I never liked 3rd person view but in this game it works for me really well. Very odd, since I do not tend to even pick up 3rd person view games....I guess since this one gives me the option, I'm "ok" with it haha.

Mostly FPV. I experiment once in a while with TPV but always return to first.

Strange, because I found WoW unplayable when scrolling into FPV, but ESO works for me.

Not a fan of TPV in any games...I've always been a FPV fan.

Depends. I did find out one thing though, you cannot back up in 3rd person. My witch in 1st person can happily back away from oncoming mobs and that usually gives her all the time she needs to fry them. In 3rd person you turn around an go the other way if you back up.

Backing up skills honed in the Fallout 3D games work well.

Yes , just like previous posters, 3rd for combat and 1st for exploration. I like the greater immersion 1st person gives but as has already been stated, it needs greater FOV unfortunately

First person, for everything. Partly for immersion, partly because I don't like the 'over the shoulder' third person view, and partly out of habit because first person is what I used in all the other TES games. I am sometimes aware that I'm missing useful information in combat by playing this way, but most of the time I don't care.

I’ve always loved games a lot more if you at least have the ability to go 1st person, It helps me really become part of the world if I’m looking though my characters eyes. I can see the benefits of fighting 3rd person, but in this game I have no trouble at all. I even considerate a bit more of a challenge to fight looking though my own eyes. I think if they were to ever get rid of it would break the game for me. I used to think I was the only guy who plays 1st person, but there are a lot of us. Most don’t really like to power level as much as enjoying the story. In my mind to each their own, but I love the story lines of the game! To me that’s the truly the best part. So my vote is 1st person; for immersion, not to mention screen shots. I wish they would enable a first person view of swimming and horseback. That would be perfect. Not to ever make it only 1st person, but at least have the ability to go to it. I hope everyone enjoys this game as much as I do no matter how you play! Cheers! - A

There still is no FOV slider, so third. First only for screenshots. And it will probably stay that way, I'd miss the situational awareness.

    Hi folks,

You can have a good "situational awareness" with 1st PV but you have to find HOW to play it that way. As most often having to take a look at the enemies placement and thinking about a "strategy" before engaging yourself in combat. Then ALWAYS try to be in motion to look around your target while fighting and you'll succed in great EPIC battles!

Anyway if you don't want to play that way,

you can already tweak FOV in game with this : How you can change FOV in game

...and, here is a VERY GOOD NEWS: an official vanilla FOV slider will come soon! Here is the official link: Will the FOV in first-person mode change to allow different settings?

Zenimax definitely cares about user's feedback here, so let's feed the good threats and we will get the best MMORPG ever! ;)

Here are some topics that may interest you if you care about enjoying this MMO in 1st Person RP style (do not forget to endorse them if you agree):

Can we have a continuous 1st person view experience please

Can we have head bobbing for 1st person

No more disturbing dialog's camera jump in 1st person view

    Cheers!

I never use 1st person unless absolutely necessary because it actually *breaks* immersion for me. In real life your peripheral vision actually allows you to see yourself when you move, around the edges. I've never seen a 1st person view game that does that, and instead I feel like a freaking floating camera all the time. I can't get past it. In 3rd person I can suspend disbelief a lot more...

ESO is the first version of a game set in the elderscrollsverse that has semi-decent third person targeting (though the angle is skewed in a way that throws me a lot) so it's been kind of a relief for me.

I have made a suggestion about this here:
(cut and paste from original topic)

"Please give more substance to the 1st person view:
Make the player body visible and casting shadows! Why not using the 3rd person's model and animations for the 1st person view? This would allow for an awsome game experience and the head bobbing movements will come naturally with it. This can give a more natural life-like feeling to this view and this will allow player to see what he is actualy wearing and feel embodies in this TESO world ! These feelings are very strong and make the all game experience really more intense for those how care about immersion! I do."

Complete post here: Can we have head bobbing for 1st person

Always third person . I have played all TES games in third person also. For me first person actually hinders immersion in a RPG in a dig way.The only exceptions are FPS/RPG hybrids like System shock and DEUS EX.

I don't understand the complaints against first person in ESO since I think it was always this terrible if not worse. It was only that the combat in the single player games was so stupidly simple and broken that it was possible to do it in first person .One of the things I like most in ESO is that it was built with primarily 3rd person in mind unlike the single player games in which it was an afterthought that could only be tolerable with mods.

I have come to bring light to this thread post-FoV slider option for first-person view.

To state the foundation of how I play TESO first: I played each TES game in first-person view because I usually play games in the way they were designed to be played. That said, TESO wasn't designed with first-person view in mind and, even with the FoV slider added into the game, you will still have trouble dodging ranged attacks as well as noticing Combat Cues while in first-person.

I feel that this game was designed from the ground-up for third-person view, and even with the addition of the FoV slider, my thoughts on that haven't changed.

There is a somewhat lifeless feeling I get out of playing in first-person that I feel occurs for my end because 1) the lack of an option for camera bobbing, 2) melee hits you make don't feel as visceral as they do in third-person view, 3) any spells you cast or casted towards you completely obstruct your view, whereas you'd see what else is going around you in third-person, 4) dodge rolls and many other forms of maneuvers/animations are cut-short in first-person view because you would otherwise get dizzy, but it hurts immersion nonetheless, and this leads me to 5) there is no collision detection between Friendly NPCs, Followers, or Enemy NPCs when in that view (try it yourself, if you don't believe me).

All the above make me feel like a ghost and less of an able player in first-person view when it comes to questing and combat.

The only time I use it is when I feel it actually adds immersion to the game. This includes, but isn't limited to, the following areas: indoors or in tight corridors (to avoid camera shakiness), looting (not harvesting resources), while in stealth (there is a strange darkening animation otherwise in third-person, but I used to use 3PV for stealth before that change was made), and taking screenshots. Otherwise, it's mostly just third-person for me because that's just the way I feel the game was designed across the whole spectrum.

This is why I'm honestly glad that ZeniMax catered to both sides of the spectrum. While I would still appreciate first-person view for combat, it's not realistic for me because there is just a lack of visual cues I would get while in third-person view. This is why I'm glad we have the option to switch between both on-the-fly with the V key. I think ZeniMax did a great job with both perspectives after the introduction of the Field of View slider, but I would like to see more improvements made to first-person, such as head-bobbing and proper collision detection, so that the view could be more tolerated by most people.

I loved Morrowind first-person but this game is unplayable IMO in that way, the stupid 'red AoE' mechanics mean you need to see the ground where your feet are otherwise you miss a lot of it.

3rd person always. Exception is when it's forced, being back up against a wall; when fighting up hill in Cryodil, that long grass just gets in the way; or when I want to get a closer look.

I also have my middle click button as one of my abilities and sometimes that scrolls me to first person if I am spamming it a lot, but I always scroll it right back out.
  • Morrighan_Ravenborn
I always use 3rd person other than when something is blocking my view in battle, then I'll quickly swap to 1st.
