So am I really pigeonholed to Light Armor, a Dress and a Staff to survive/be effective post 50?

demonlkojipub19_ESO✭✭✭✭✭Well, I am VR10 Templar, Heavy Armour, Sword and Board, Stamina build and get along just fine. Ever since the nerf to VR difficulty I can down 6+ mobs without breaking a sweat.
Though that doesn't mean everyone feels the same way I do, ZOS has said that they "have heard us" and are working on it in incremental fixes. They've made small buffs to Templars and IIRC they are working on stamina management, etc etc. Many have said that light armour and staff is the only way to play past, but honestly... that is the easiest way. If people are playing past with heavy armour stamina builds, then it is clearly possible.
VR1-10 content wasn't that bad before the nerf, and you still wouldn't do as well as an all out magicka build would.2 -

Competitive, speed runs trials and impulse trains in PVP are the only things that you would likely be locked out of. You should be able to be moderately successful at everything else.
That said, in my experience, a moderately effective stamina build is a lot harder to play than a Magicka build. You can swing 700+ dps without clipping or animation cancelling at all with magicka. I'm a quick thinking DW/2H NB at VR6 and loving every minute of it. I like the challenge it's been to build my 10-abilities slate, of which 2H gets exactly one slot. I loved figuring out just how to split out my maj-health-stam, how to augment various recovery rates, how to best increase my crits and Weap damage, and how to best apply my limited CCs. I loved figuring out how to get minor CC out of non-CC abilities.
It's been a challenge but Very Rewarding. I love the clink of weapons, I love rolling the heck out of the way, and I love Dark Cloaking just long enough to swap a weapon and come out swinging. Oh Yeah.
I've just never been the mage type.
You would have liked it more before they nerfed it now there was a challenge.2 -
heyguyslol✭✭✭You can choose any main weapon as your offensive wep and for your secondary wep either use another offensive wep choice and run with a healer or use a resto staff and heal your self. If you dont like these choices then dont play the game.@heyguyslol

It's not that the trial groups want to "get it done in a certain time" and it's not that the raid leaders are being elitist, you just simply cannot complete the dps check bosses without light armor and a staff. A good group of all cookie cutter builds might be able to carry a stamina build dps or two, but it would be out their own benevolence and pity.
As others have said, vet content and pvp you can do alright with whatever build you want (in most cases...). You simply cannot participate in trial content without the cookie cutter build though. I wonder which will come first - balance fixes to builds, or mechanic fixes to the trials to get rid of the ridiculous dps checks until they can get balance working.Edited by Zheg on August 19, 2014 1:24PM2 -

Seriously, there's a TON of people complaining that they can't find a group because they feel discriminated by their character build... find like-minded players and maintain contact. Make a guild together.
Don't wait for Zenimax to do it for you. DO SOMETHING. Those are the things that are the most worthwhile.

Zarman✭✭✭VR11 vampire Dragon Knight, sword and shield tank with all heavy armour solo'd all the vet content except wb, anchors, and group dungeons, had trouble in some places, but nothing I couldn't do after an attempt or two.
Never had a problem finding a group because of my build, never even comes up, had problems finding a group because VR is mostly empty except for all the motif farmers because Xenia made purples spawn there, like noobs.Edited by Zarman on August 19, 2014 3:13PM1 -

No it wasn't. I was one of the people that was against the nerf. Regardless the OPs question was if he would be forced to use a magic build with dress and staff to play through. The answer is no. Sure, that build is the "can I play daddy?" build of ESO but it is in no way the only way.
Of course an all out magic build would do better than my Templar, that wasn't even a question, or in dispute.

But, that said, I do not want to be forced into any of those options simply to survive in the VR realm or be welcome in a party.
I'm leveling slowly across several alts and no where near 50 as of yet. But this is what I'm hearing in chat and reading on the forums.
How legit of a concern is it?
Are there signs that there will be balance adjustments made in the future in regards to the worth of using Heavy Armor?
Will your Secondary Weapon slot (for melee) always need to be a Staff? Or is a Bow, sword & board a viable option for higher lvls and difficulty?

trying to replicate the theory crafting with. Dk vr12 2h in 5 HR, 2 so far NM sets. Med of course. I reset attributes and went 27 stam, 23 health. All gltphs stam. Upgraded to blues. Impenetrable on 6 out of 7 and one infused cause i lacked thw trait. Will reset skill points soon and go back to putting points into medium again. I am changing mundus stone to thief tonight. Want to see if i can cross the consistent 600 dps mark and still be a little survivable. I was doing 500 pretty consistently with only having 2 points into the medium line. Seriously, if you don't even use the class, then you have absolutely no ground to stand on to complain about its function. He would have exactly the same problem using the same weapon abilities on any other class. You actually have to use the class to get what is described in its description or class impression. Otherwise, your class doesn't even matter.
I love how he is going around the forums saying we tore him appart for playing the way he wanted. He talked about and rage quit a Nightblade, not an archer. Had he left his class completely out of the discussion (like he did with his build) and had simply said archer, it would have been a different discussion.
