If you are hiring someone to run a non-profit and they say "I have run 12 non-profits in the past" their experience is going to be valuable to you right?

Perhaps, however it would behoove you to check on their history and see if eh ran the non-profits well, or into the ground. With someone's personal experience with an activity (such as a MMO) it's not realistically possible to determine due to the subjective nature of our experiences.

Of course. Just because someone has experience doesn't mean they are competent or have good ideas. I just think experience in a subject does help give some perspective.

As an example I have an Aunt who is one of the biggest MMO vets I have ever met. She has played MMO's daily since EQ was launched and played online games before that. She met her husband in online games and has played WoW for over seven years. At the same time she has never hit max level in any game and never plans to and just uses them as a social circle. I would not think her advice as far as end game holds a lot of weight.

Another example would be someone who has never played an MMO suggesting that everyone should be able to interact with the game exactly like Skyrim probably is lacking the knowledge of how an MMO works to make a valid suggestion. They don't understand how that can't work in an MMO. You also have people suggesting they should be bug free, never have lag, have everything working from day one, be free to play with no store and no sub and I think anyone with MMO experience realizes how unrealistic those expectations are.

I'm seeing that we're agreeing, but coming from different viewpoints. Therefore with much ado about nothing, I would say we've killed a few virtual trees in order to be able to say the same thing as was said in a previous post, that the experience of the poster matters little without knowing the circumstances of that experience, but the content of the post should stand on its own merit.

Frankly I don't care whether someone has played a lot of MMOs and has hopefully gained some perspective from it, or just feels entitled from doing so.

It's those armchair designers, who've never written a single line of code in their lives, without even the slightest clue what designing, programming, and debugging for a code base with multiple millions of lines of code entails, but who propose or demand features to be implemented/fixed on the double, or else they pull their subscription now, who drive me up the wall.

For the live of me, I can't take those seriously. But telling them so doesn't help or change matters, so what? :P

Funny, you do exactly the same thing as the super mmo experts... Crying about armchair programmers that dont know about the miracle work behind the game! Priceless!

I don't know how to build a car...but I expect it to work when I buy it....saying the consumer doesn't know how to program is pointless....The list of people employed by this game is not like 5 people....it's a ton. Do I have fun in this game? Yes....has it been worth the initial cost? Yes...has any of the updates been worth $15....sorta....is it worth continued $ support...probably not.
But that's my opinion. It makes no difference how many MMO's you played the value is all based on what each person takes from it...will this game be worth it in the long run? Hard to say because everyone has a breaking point. But just because you played an MMO doesn't make you more knowledgeable on things that are broken or irritating.

I've played many MMO's and so far ESO is by far the best. I base this opinion purely on combat. But it is only an opinion, which everyone is entitled to.

Experience has to count for something though. I mean, I don't play American football games.... or even understand the rules so my opinion would count for far less than say a soccer game, which I have extensive experience. I don't see why MMO's are any different.

The thing is almost always, all people are offering is opinions. I don't see why people can't back up their opinions by saying they are experienced MMO gamers.

I've played every TES game except Arena, and a fair few MMO's.
IT doesn't have the perks of a TES game, just the backstory, as for the MMO side of it, still has a lot of work to be done.

I will say this. A lot of MMO's are expected to have too much in them at startup. Everyone wants every new MMO to have all the features and content of WOW after ten years. It is a pretty ridiculous expectation. When looking at an MMO a player needs to look at things like theme, play style, and the trajectory of development that the game designers have in mind. If you like those things, then go for it, if you don't then don't. I have a couple of main reasons I chose ESO.

    1) Its an Elder Scrolls game. I would have been equally excited about a Fallout Online. I just like the open-ness and thought out backgrounds you get from Bethesda games. They make worlds that feel lived in, at least more lived in than other games. Purely subjective opinion I realize.

    2) Its an action combat based game. Maybe I'm getting older, but I'm getting tired of having to strike 50 different abilities, and all in the precise order at the precise moment. MMO's with combination attacks like DCUO or ESO's style, are drawing me in more of late. The way games have 50 different abilities with combinations are the reason I have a programmable keyboard and mouse. When you know you're going to repeat the same 7 key combo of attacks over and over, there really is no reason to get arthritis or carpal tunnel, when you can let the keyboard do it for you. What I love about ESO is it doesn't do that to the player, and I appreciate it. There is also the look and feel of a fast paced combat game, and that's the other thing I love about ESO.

My father had some advice for me... never buy the first model year of a car, they haven't worked all the kinks out yet. It's true of automobiles, it's true of games, it's true of warships! The first iteration of anything is less-than-perfect. MMOs, being a wildly complex interaction between hardware and software on the server side and client side software on vastly disperate hardware, are a bleeding miracle of modern tech and programming.

You actually would have had to play a lot of MMOs to know why someone who played a lot of MMOs opinion is more valid than yours.

I played Uo,neverwinter nights, ever quest, daoc ,wow(only some months),guild wars 1, and this is the first mmorpg that did not made me fall in a deep sleep doing pve. Usually i hate pve ,and questing ,and i prefeare rvr/pvp focused mmo but here ,i like both pve and rvr in a good mix. Ofc it isn t perfect (any moorpg is)in my prospective, i could change some things, but i like it and i'm enjoying it the way it is. My only criticism maybe could go in the "repatching bugs" section, but i have good hopes and devs seems like they re trying to do their best.

neverwinter nights is about as much a MMORPG as Diablo3 (hint, they aren't)

Seriously, can we all agree to quit trying to use this lame attempt at validation? Just present your opinion. We'll decide for ourselves if it's cogent or not, thanks.

Id put that in the same bucket as the 'No MMO is perfect' argument :P

It is only a reference to familiarity of mechanics. It is the same as saying one has played a ton of rpgs and board games. You draw experience in game design and tactics that can be applied elsewhere for comparison. If mentioned as a backdrop for the conversation it is fine. To suggest superiority is a mistake.

Some may simply be assuming it reflects upon ego. It may not be the case and the failing is on the reader.

When it comes to how all the various game systems in a MMO are designed, someone who has been playing MMOs for a long time and seen several different methods of how game systems were designed has a much broader perspective compared to a first time MMOer.

Thanks for being a classic example of what I'm saying. Look up "appeal to authority". Instead of someone just telling us about their vast experience, it would be far better to present the substance of it (e.g: in game X we did Y and it worked because Z). It's like a reverse ad hominem.

Your welcome. As a parent of two teenagers and a senior position as a software engineer at work thanks to 30+ years experience, I often encounter people with little to no experience who think they know more than I do. While I do value their input, I know their lack of experience sometimes prevents them from understanding what the big picture is.

The times is actually a more forgiving PvE game. I doubt you'd be able to hack the original UO.
