Where are we running? What's the rush?

don't know why, there isn't much to look forward to honestly. This game really is about the journey at least for now. its a very enjoyable one to boot (at least to me it was)

I love walking and do it often on purpose in ESO - nostalgic memories I guess coming from playing Skyrim without fast-travel, walking almost everywhere because overloaded; and freezing to death while doing so because Frostfall mod. Good times...

Tonight when i played, i was having nostalgic memories of old computer games and even from early MMORPG, games and begin wondering..

Once in very first games and many years after that, there was not even an option to run, there was enough time to go anywhere and take the time to solve puzles and stuff like that. Admire scenery, you name it. These days i included just run run run, why? Where are we foing with such a rush? Cant we jhust take our time and take it slow, instead of running from place a to b to c doing quests as fast as we can? In every game when i try to slow down and walk, i just continue to running and i have no rush to nowhere, yet it seems like i do have a terrible rush. When ever i slow down, i tend to find more sidequests, more stuff to gather, more to see and more to do.

So whats the rush that we even have to ride horses to houses and do fast travel instead just going on roads or exploring the forests, why even the super speed that is today, it never is enough?
It feels like a lifetime ago when the 16-bit computer/console games were state of the art and my main time sinks.
Aside from the ocassional impuls of nostalgia, I don't play them anymore.

Graphics are only so long interesting. They are still worse then life, so they cannot really keep me in their grip.
I do tend to listen to all vioceovers (asuming I have not heard them 5 times already). It being NPC voiced is one of the major features of the game for me.

But then I am a odd case, for how whom the fully voiced (NPC and PC) nature of SWTOR was a big factor in playing it.

How else could they state the obvious about the endgame being repetitive and a grind?
I mean they can't just go on the forum and claim that, knowing that it is true for 100% of all MMO's, has always been and propably will always be. Right? </irony>

I tend to take it slowly, but I am also in no rush to keep up with guild members etc.

Many people rush because they need to, especially if you raid or do dungeons frequently a specific item set is required. This is why WOW is so bad these days, everyone who goes into dungeons or raids knows that he must keep up with the top 5% else he or she wont get any invites.

Not sure if its that bad at ESO, but this would be an explanation for it.

Personally I don't even have a horse yet and have unbound my Sprint button ;)

The journey?! Doesn't everyone just load up a movie, fast forward to the end, then immediately go trash talk it on the internet!? Come on now, who attempts to be entertained by entertainment products? That's just silly! Just get to the end and demand a sequel!

    /sarcasm

That's the thing, nobody is saying "Thou shalt rush to the end!" but there are a lot of people saying that if you're not playing that movie in slow motion, you're doing it wrong. Anyone faster than them is "in a rush", when all the person in question is likely doing is playing at a pace they're uncomfortable with.

I enjoy nice views and sceneries in games alot. For 30 sec, then im off again playing with what they provided me with. I dont know about you guys & girls but when I get the that urge for relaxation or a nature fix I dont fire up Eso, I put on my shoes and takes a walk. I can recommend it.

You didn't have running nor horses because the MMOs where developed in Korea and they have hourly and daily subscriptions there so the MMO developers made the games with loooooong walking distances so you had to waste a maximum amount of time walking and traveling.

The slower you where, the more hours/days you paid, the more money they earned.

If you think it was some hippy dev thinking about the player enjoying the beauty of the game and takin' it slowwww, you're sadly mistaken :(

If you ask me anyone that's been on since beta and doesn't have a vet level toon is just clueless on how to do quests. Or just farming mats and motifs to make gold.
 I've been playing since beta, and my main is Lvl 43. I've done all the quests that have popped up so far and I don't die that often, so I don't think I'm clueless. I (mostly) only gather mats that I see, and vendor the ones I don't use (ones worth 0 gold go in the guild bank). I've never done anything with a motif. So I don't farm to make gold.

I use my horse to go most places (although I don't use sprint), and only run on foot when I forget I have a horse or am going between a bunch of gathering nodes I've seen. I run because I'm going somewhere; it takes too long to get anywhere walking really, and I only walk if I have nowhere in particular to go. I don't use horses in town however because they take up too much room and I consider it not-so-very lore-friendly to be on a horse going up the staircases and into the bank.

    I have to disagree.

Early games had a run, they didn't have a walk.

That taken care of, I agree with your sentiment of enjoying the journey. However that has nothing to do with a run button. I can enjoy the journey just as much running from point A to point B as I can walking. I'm still experiencing the journey.

(Note: I have a horse, but I still tend to run most of the time. I do lots of harvesting on the way from point A to point B, and the mount/dismount animations make it feel like using my horse has too much downtime.)

some didn't, but that was a long long time ago. Monkey Island, for example, didn't iirc, but really, there wasn't much ground to cover. Maniac Mansion is another one I can remember. Early games just had one speed which was the speed they could animate the character moving at for the most part.

A while back I noticed a couple of players walking everywhere, even out in the middle of nowhere in the Alikir Desert. I really like the Walk animation in this game TBH.

I have been playing this game since launch, and I have 3 active characters. One is level 49, one is 48 and the other is 45. I have not finished the MQ with any of them, and only one has finished Coldharbor. I have not done the EP alliance with any of them. I play 3 to 4 hours a day on average, some weekend days I play 12 hours. Obviously I am not in a hurry to get anywhere.

However, I do upgrade the speed on my horses. Why? Because I hate wasting time running down the same road over and over again. I stop and look at the flowers and views sure, and sometimes I just go around the game map watching what is going on. But, going to a place to quest? Get me there as quickly as possible.

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

I hate instant fast travel because it makes such a well designed game world, filled with wonder and surprises, seem very very small. Even with Mark/Recall and the Intervention spells in Morrowind, that game seemed so much larger than Oblivion and Skyrim. And yes, in some cases it felt even bigger than ESO.

When instant fast travel is available, I have to use it though, because my desire for immediate progress always outweighs some ephemeral idea about preserving my mental perception of the size and scope of the game world.

    Gotta go fast.

Do they play 10 minutes a day or something? How slow can you be? No-lifers like myself can't compute.

Other games & Alts. End-Game content is (and always has been) a joke of a hamster wheel devs put in to keep content locusts occupied until more real content comes out. Ideally (IMO) you want to be playing enough other games and alts that you reach the end of the current (real) content right at the point that they release additional content.

Today i made a new character, i promised myself that this time when going all the way from daggerfall covenant quests, i walk while not in road, sneak in hostile zones and try to act naturally.

That seems somewhat backwards to me. In reality I'd expect to walk (or ride horse) when on road, run (or sneak) otherwise. Sprinting for short bursts when in hostile territory when not sneaking. Pretty much everywhere is hostile territory. If I'm not sneaking I'd be running (or sprinting) to try to get from point A to point B with minimal time for possible detection. And remember, it's running, not sprinting. A human that's in shape can run/jog for a REALLY long time.

Wrong genre. (and you didn't go back far enough) Wizardry, Bard's Tale, Ultima, etc. You moved as fast as you could press the key. (and, even popping over to adventures, you moved as fast as you could type "n") Heck, assuming you didn't run into a monster you could run from one side of Skara Brae to the other in seconds. They didn't even animate the movement.

    I always love these posts.

OP, the first 500 times I saw the Daggerfall market running from the wayshrine to the bank I enjoyed. Now I ride my horse that I paid 42k for and fed daily for a month. I just spent the better part of about 5 weeks stuck at two levels in an alt farming the blue provisioning recipes up to level 25 and now need to level again to do the next batch. Forgive me if I don't find the need to crawl through locales I've seen a thousand times since April on my way to do so.

That's a big reason why I leveled all crafts on my main (and no, what with at least 300 skill points in the game, I am in no way "gimped" despite what others may say); much less running around required.

Ture that, but its just that i tend to walk in foirest when in reality (Yes i do that) And as my character right now being female restoration mage with all the robes and stuff, running in forests sounds unpractical for my clothing. Anyway, i will see how this goes and so forth, hopefully i can keep my promise to me.

I basically saw someone jump their horse over a treasure chest on their way from point A to point B yesterday. I enjoy going horseless so I can harvest, wander, and just take in the scenery.

This is much to the chagrin of my guildies, however, so I will break down and spend the 1g for my imperial horse for when we're grouping at least.

Previously you would see a line of horses trailed by a short Bosmer sprinting for his life because he picked up all the stray monsters along the way. At least now I can arrive with stamina intact.

Wish animals would not attack so fast tho, they were much more tolerant to nearby humanoids in Lord of the Rings Online.

The first games i ever played? Spectrum ZX+.. some Wally Street something.. Enigma perphaps, yes there was running in Enigma i think.. Spy VS Spy maybe.. Mostly i remember my early PC gaming career with all the Sierra games like Space Quest series, Kings Qyest series, Manhunter, Leisure Suit Larry.. Maniac Mansion, Day of the Tentacle, Monkey Islands, Zak McKtaken and the Alien Mindbenders, Goldrush.. List is extensive suffice to say :)

Then there was games where i run.. Sports games which made me buy new Joysticks mothly XD

I Also played some of the Ultima Series, maybe 5 and 6... Trav4eling fas fast maybe but world felt big and castles and houses were also plenty, i dont remember them being very fast travel vise, i could be wrong..

Unfortunately, subscription games typically are trying to make money. In order to make money, the current model suggests players need to achieve things and compete. When players are forced to compete, they want to be the best first, and this leads to power leveling/grinding/rushing/general high efficiency styles of play.

Yes it sucks, but on the plus side this is perhaps one of the most generous MMOs I've played in terms of content. Short of end game content, there is very little one player can do that another can't.
