one time, I walked past a guy fighting mobs right by a chest and started picking the lock on the chest. Then I realized what a jerk I was being, helped him finish off the mobs and let him loot the chest. I suspect he thought I just failed at picking the lock though.

I have not done it since, and I will help people if they are fighting by nodes I want, afterwards I will race to get the node though.

It was a relatively tough dolmen for two...storm atronachs kept spawning, and he more or less left me to it while he grabbed pinions. I got ticked off when he grabbed the third so placed myself at the last pinion, thinking he would get the message and I continued to fight

Other than needing to grab the pinions to release the anchor, have I missed something special about them? Or, was the point that he left you to do the anchor while he ran around and stayed out of trouble?

Yeah, there is an achievement attached to them I think.

ETA: And no, he was taking all the pinions, leaving me to tackle the mobs alone.

There is an achievement based on the number of pinions you've grabbed. Not sure if there's any other reason to care about getting them. Maybe they give you fighter's guild XP?

    1. Okay, so mind your own business. If you decide to intrude and help someone, accept the possibility that you just tried to help some anti-social, hermit soloer that would rather die than receive help from another person.
    2.
    2. In ESO, Tanks do not have AoE CC. Tanks are not expected to keep aggro on large mobs 100% of the time on large mobs like in other MMOs. DPS are expected to apply CC and dps hard enough to kill mobs quickly.

    3. There is no way of telling someone that they fail that is going to go over well. Just silently leave groups with tanks that fail and your probably will be solved. If you choose to vent your frustration by say something, even if you say it nicely, you accept that the person is probably going to get insulted and respond in anger.

I could not disagree more with this. If I'm in a PUG and I'm doing a bad job at my role, I want people to give me suggestions on how to do better. As long as you're not being a jerk about it, I'll pay attention and try to adjust my play based on the feedback. That's how I've developed my tanking skills to the point where I think I'm fairly decent at it (although I've definitely still got more to learn, so I'm still open to more feedback). If you just silently leave, how am I going to figure out what to do better?

I think the point is that a lot of people won't tell you what you're doing wrong because they have no idea what you're doing wrong and for the most most part even if they DO think they know what you're doing wrong, they're wrong. (Oof, what a mouthful)
They'll tell you you're useless at tanking because they died, (even though they 'stood in the fire' or 'pulled aggro' from the boss), or the healer is useless or some other excuse that doesn't involve it being their fault, but yours.
They just expect to go into the dungeon do as little as possible and come out with the rewards.
Such is the life of anyone who aspires to be an MMO tank.

And yes, I am that cynical :)

so I decided to just hit trade invite on him fast a bunch of times until the mobs caught him and he died.

So this is a thing, is it? That explains the repeated, seemingly random trade invites I got the other day. They just came out of nowhere. I think we'd tangled with a few of the same mobs along the way, but if anything it made our jobs easier. No nodes, loot, or chests involved. No mobs around, either. Hmmm...

Repeated trade-invites from random guy in quest run, no apparent reason.

I'd rather not compete with other gamers for unearned things like nodes. There's always more elsewhere... so I'll just step back and wave. Less stress for me that way.

Regardless, criticizing people means you need to accept that they might not take kindly to it. Not all are as rational as you.

My overall point is that the OP doesn't seem to have very thick skin. If he can't take the possibility of an angry response, he needs to just avoid the possibility.

There's an achievement for grabbing something like 100 pinions so it can be frustrating if someone is not contributing to any fighting and is grabbing them all.

That said, it wouldn't surprise me if many times when this sort of thing happens, the player feels kind of helpless in battle and thinks they are at least contributing something by getting all the pinions.

You weren't aware, I wasn't aware until last week and I'm pretty sure many others arent aware either.

Edit, maybe I should have read the other replies first :)

    Here's what I do:

"This requires a pen and a piece of paper.. Simply because I like the feel of writing in a digital world just like I like the smell of a book with real paper rather then a kindle...)"

    1. Be a gentleman, Or Lady, treat other players with respect, help out when you can, and be an all around pleasant sort.

    2. When you come across one of these subhuman species of individuals, do not contact them or insult them, simply write their name down on the piece of paper.

    3. When the Justice system comes out, these same people will undoubtedly become criminals with bounties. Hunt them down and camp their corpse repeatedly until they rage quit the game or delete the character.

By ding the above you are continuing to do a community service to the other players in the game, removing the unwanted scum from existence, while at the same time getting your vengeance and doing your do diligence to make ESO a better place for all.

I guess this is all part and parcel of an MMO.

The idealist in me was thinking while playing Skyrim, hey, I'd love to play this game with other people, it would be fun to be able to work alongside other players. The realization is that while sometimes meeting up with a random is a good thing, but for the most it's a brief encounter with no two way street.

I guess that's the difference of an idealistic view vs. realistic one.

Just like there are selfish morons you meet from day to day, you'll find equally selfish morons in game. The flip side to that is you do find good people too, and I like the idea of being generous in game and paying it forward.

Been here since Feb 2014 - You'd think I'd be half reasonable at this game by now...
