Can someone please clarify attributes for me? So there is a soft cap and a hard cap I hear.. how does that translate to the character screen.. each attribute has 2 numbers… is the orange the hardcap or the softcap number?

TIA

your attributes level up, when they hit the soft cap, any increases are reduced buth some ratio. When they hit the Hard cap they don't increase at all.

    Soft cap is orange.

The hardcap is not visible on the character sheet, it is a fixed number you can look up for various stats. When a stat become orange (overcharged) it means you are exceeding the softcap. There's a few addons around that display these numbers and more stats on the character sheet - for starters might I suggest the following (softcap) addon: http://www.esoui.com/downloads/info141-SoftcapInfo.html

Thanks, I have get that add on for sure tonight

How about the first attribute increase amount? For example, if I put 10 points into magic, I'll see "100" to the left of the numbers.. this doesn't change the first white number or the second orange number. So I just add that 100 to the first white number to get my actual attribute rating and if I go over the orange number I have exceeded the softcap?

    Thanks again...

Soft cap will limit how much further you can raise the stat you are going for. Say you have soft cap for magicka and put an attribute point in for magicka you will only get +5 instead of +10 for that point. So basically soft cap will cut in half stats if you keep applying, don't take it as you shouldn't still stack your main stat though.

    Soft cap is orange.
Hardcap numbers do still increase but the value gained from the attribute stops. As an example, 3150 is the hard cap for Resistance and Armor at VR12 (50% reduction to damage taken), you can indeed stack that higher than 3150 but it will be of zero benefit unless you get an Armor/Resistance debuff applied to you, which happens pretty much all the time.

Take for example any player in PvP that uses a Destro staff, they automatically have a 52% Resistance penetration to all targets (if they wear 7pcs Light Armor and have the passives). This is a static "debuff" that cannot be purged or cleansed. If they add penetration on that Staff it gets even higher, but most use Crit.

Armor debufs can exceed 100% but have short durations and cannot be applied continuously by a single player or NPC. Also, most Armor debuffs can be cleansed and purged.

Thanks for the replies.. and sorry if I'm dense, but now I'm more confused..

So if the softcap is the righthand orange figure.. which I haven't hit on any of my attributes.... then why do I get a red figure next to my stat with an overcharged warning?

Also, is the consensus still to put all points into health as the most efficient way for a sorcerer using staff heal/staff dps build? I guess this is my ultimate question on this.

At a guess, that'll be the hardcap, it means you can't increase the ingame value without levelling up. You can add to the number via enchantments, but it doesn't have an effect.

Thanks for the replies... I ended up compromising with 25/24... as I was running out of mana too often.. this feels a bit better.
