New Player Thoughts

Hey all. Super stoked to be a member of this community. A little history before I start. I started with Morrowind(actually built my first rig for that game) and built another rig for Oblivion. I am a huge fan of the franchise. My MMO playing days started with SWG. Loved that game. Went to Guild Wars 1 from there and then to other games like Pirates of the Burning Sea, LOTRO, SW:ToR, Neverwinter etc.

I haven't played much yet. I am giving it time to get going. I wanted to drop some honest and objective feedback. Please feel free to let me know if the things I am criticizing change later on. That kind of thing could actually get me to stick around longer, but I do plan on playing at least to level 30 to see if this game is for me, and level 30 on a few classes at that. I want to give this game a real chance.

The game world feels like Tamriel. That is probably the highest compliment I could give the game. The devs did a great job designing the world and making it feel like an ES game through and through as far as the world design goes. I love it. The armor and characters are pretty good too as well as the character creation. Top notch. I like the world sounds and music as well. It's great.

My criticisms so far would be that crafting stations could be placed closer to banks for certain factions. Some of the icons aren't displayed prominently enough in maps for starter towns. I am sure I would even take it for granted in a month or two, but so many other games offer convenient crafting stations in towns. Stros M'Kai is the exception for sure. That is the way all of them should be.

I am sure combat will feel better later, but for now it feels like there is less gravity on Tamriel than on Earth. I guess floaty would describe it? It's hard to describe, but a lot of the attacks don't feel meaty enough. When you block an attack in an ES game it feels like it has weight if that makes sense? I know it's an MMO, but there are other MMOs out there that have done a better job in that department. I am sure when I start getting access to higher end skills that will change.

I was really bummed that the world wasn't full open world like LOTRO. Let's face it, in the Elder Scrolls universe, Tamriel is the star. Running around the open world portions of those games with no load screens is amazing. To have it be zoned like GW2 or SW:ToR is a bummer. It takes a lot of the flavor of Tamriel out of the equation.

So far I like the quest structure for the most part, but there is way too much running around between NPCs and not enough action. I really want to get to the day where MMO devs take off the training wheels for games and let us just play, or have two starting zones: 1 for MMO vets and one for new players to MMOs. It's tiresome having to wade through 30 hours of training wheels in starter zones in MMOs. Do it like Dark Souls and throw us to the wolves.

Thanks for your time and thanks for the game!

Aside from one questline per zone you don't have to play any of the other content. Its not really as limiting as people act like; that is if your good enough to win fights in higher zones... Very possible if your build is good. Try different play styles, don't think the whole game is terrible because what u try isn't working as you would like. Keep in mind that are vet is very easy and you can do it with any build but vet is much harder; so don't make a bunch of toons before you have vet experience. As far as ults there is enough skill points to have two builds in one character.
The best advice is alevel as many different things before vet as possible because the game is so much easier, I fully leveled all class skills at least to morph ,4 weapons and light and heavy and class trees to 50 by v3 because I never used fully leveled skills while leveling. Only in PvP/ dungeons. Now I can play a great DPs and great dedicated heal on the same toon without wasting a massive amount of time making a new character.

My go-to place for crafting, banking, and pretty much everything else is Shornhelm in Rivenspire. Everything is located within 10 seconds of stepping out of the teleportation shrine.

Thanks for the knowledge. I will try that out. I hope you didnt think I was saying the game is terrible. I have only played a few hours and know better. Just offering honest praise and criticism of what I have seen so far. So many people only give games a few hours if that. This game is a little behind the curve in my opinion as far as the game play early on is concerned. It drags a little. It's not bad, just an opinion at first glance. Tons of other games are guilty of it too and as long as it starts ramping up soon, it's not a major deal.

For the sake of perfomance I think it's not as bad to have the world divided into zones. By the way, did you see the zone-to-zone "gates"? I think they are designed as realistic as possible. Like the "gate" from Stonefalls to Deshaan it's not some portal like in Guild Wars 2. It's just a road. You follow the road, see the trees and sky behind the big open gates, pass through that gates and *whoosh* you're in the next zone.
Doesn't really differ that much from an open world :) to my opinion

About the closest you are going to get to open world is Cyrodiil. That zone is almost as large as every other zone combined.

Bad news....it doesn't get much better....The music and songs will be a let down because it's the same music and songs in all factions, towns and inns....I can honestly say the best part of the game is lvl 1 to about 40....hopefully the new additions will come soon enough to actually spark some interest....as of now most people HOPE....sadly I must admit that...it is a good game and some people are still having fun....but the things you note concerns about will double by this time next week....If you play more then 10 hours a week.

Some of the cities are designed with all the crafting stations, the bank and the way shrine very close to each other. There are some that aren't designed to be that convenient, but most are pretty good. Make sure to click on the way shrine itself to access the free travel from point to point; if you just open the map you will think you have to pay. Took me a while to figure that out. The weight of the combat strikes was something I felt at first but that stopped pretty soon.

It's true you can skip some of the quests if you want, but you need to make sure you do enough stuff to level up well. Train intimidation and persuasion as soon as you can and you will eliminate some running around for the quests.

The world is huge and some of the cities are just amazing.

Start your crafting early; spread it out over several characters. The materials you need to start your crafting are in the low level areas; if you wait, you'll end up having to revisit them to find materials you can use.

^ This. Provisioning and Alchemy are by far the easiest to level, and the ingredients can be found everywhere in the starting zones. It helps greatly when you are starting out being able to craft your own food buffs and health potions.

You won't get to Shornhelm for a while, though.

Yes, the positioning of crafting stations in some cities are really annoying.

Also, as for getting into the action, this is going to get worse if you play anything like me. Either after or before (and sometimes during) my play session I have to play the bank/inventory shuffle game. My main will run out of bag space so off to town to:
    • Deconstruct/refine/research blacksmithing
    • Deconstruct/refine/research clothing
    • Deconstruct/refine/research woodworking
    • Deconstruct enchanting
    • Sell everything I don't need
    • Repair
    • Bank everything useful
    • Log in all my alts to shuffle stuff out of bank
    • Craft what I need to (prov/alch/armor/weapons)

It has gotten easier now that I have maxed BS/WW/Clothing and research is taking much longer. I can offload any white/green items to any vendor and need less crafting station access.

Thanks for all the help all. Glad to see it starts getting better. Would have been such an easy thing to make all the crafting stations in the starter zones as well designed as the one in Stros M'Kai. Oh well.
